2 men arrested in slaying of UCLA student Andrea DelVesco, LAPD says
Two men have been arrested on suspicion of murder in connection with the death of a UCLA student whose body was found inside a burning apartment a week ago, Los Angeles police said Monday. Detectives with the LAPD's Robbery-Homicide Division used forensic evidence and witnesses' statements to link Eric Marquez and Alberto Medina, both 22, to Andrea DelVesco's death, the LAPD said in a statement. Medina was arrested Saturday at his home in Fresno, the LAPD said. Marquez was arrested a day later near his apartment in Westwood.

Woman Stabbed in the Face During Purse Snatching in Silver Lake; Attacker Sought
A woman was hospitalized early Tuesday after a man stabbed her in the face and took her purse in SIlver Lake, LAPD officials said. The victim was walking near Sunset Boulevard and Parkman Avenue shortly before 2 a.m. when the stabbing and theft occurred, according to Los Angeles Police Department Sgt. Melvin Gamble.

Seen walking down Van Nuys street bleeding, man dies of stab wounds
The attack occurred around 1 a.m. near the intersection of Vanowen Street and Woodley Avenue, Los Angeles police Sgt. S. Holtz said. The victim may have been a transient in his mid-30s who approached a vehicle immediately before the assault, ABC7 reported. The victim was seen walking down a street bleeding before police were called, Holtz said, adding that police have no description of the assailant or knowledge of the circumstances of the attack.

Investigations Underway Into Fatal LAPD Shooting Of Knife-Wielding Woman
An investigation was underway Monday into the fatal shooting of a woman with a knife by two Los Angeles police officers in the Central City area. Norma Guzman, 37, died at a hospital following the officer-involved shooting at 22nd and South San Pedro streets at about 9:30 a.m. Sunday, according to coroner's Assistant Chief Ed Winter. Officers from the LAPD's Newton Station responded to call reporting a woman armed with some sort of a blade, LAPD Officer Mike Lopez said.

1 Arrested, 1 Detained In Connection With Hit-And-Run Of LAPD Bike Officer In Sherman Oaks
One person was arrested and one person was detained on Monday afternoon in connection with a hit-and-run incident in which an LAPD bicycle officer was struck by a vehicle in Sherman Oaks that fled the scene.The officer was transported to a nearby hospital with relatively minor injuries. The crash happened shortly before 4 p.m., near the corner of Dickins Street and Noble Avenue, after the bike officer attempted to stop a motorist for a traffic violation. The motorist's vehicle then struck the officer and fled the scene.

Compton selected to receive federal aid to reduce violent crime
The city of Compton is partnering with federal law enforcement agencies to address long-standing problems with gang violence. The U.S. Department of Justice announced Monday that Compton was one of a few new cities selected to join the Violence Reduction Network, a two-year initiative aimed at providing assistance to cities with chronic violence. The program will provide federal resources, including personnel, training and other support, to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, which patrols Compton.

Hit-and-run drivers beware: New law creates statewide notification system like Amber alerts
A Los Angeles area assemblyman said a bill signed Monday by Gov. Jerry Brown to create a public alert system aimed at tracking down hit-and-run drivers will make streets safer statewide. AB 8 calls for “yellow alerts” showing details about a fleeing vehicle — such as color, make, model and license plate number — to be displayed on digital freeway and street signs. Such alerts are already used during kidnappings. “We're just ecstatic,” Assemblyman Mike Gatto told City News Service this afternoon, about 10 minutes after receiving the news from the governor's staff.
