To the editor: In your editorial, The Times took me, the LAPD and city leaders to task for purportedly not answering questions regarding a recent officer-involved shooting. (“Shot for throwing a bottle,” Editorial, Oct. 7 and “LAPD saw a veiled threat in video clip,” Oct. 7) However, we not only publicly answered the majority of those questions but our answers were included in a Times article published the same day as your editorial. The LAPD publicly discloses more information about its uses of force than any police agency in the country. We provide preliminary information at the scene, we routinely issue press statements with additional details, and we publicly disclose detailed reports with the facts, analysis and findings in each case.

Former training officer of Christopher Dorner accuses LAPD of racial discrimination
LAPD Sgt. Terie Evans' life has, for nearly a decade, been interlinked with that of a man who became a notorious killer. Evans had been accused by her then-partner on the force, Christopher Dorner, of kicking a mentally ill man. When that claim was found to be untrue, the department stripped Dorner of his badge. His subsequent rage led to a homicidal rampage across Southern California in 2013 that Evans helped to end by identifying him to authorities.

Man Injured After Car Slams Into Granada Hills Home
Police were searching for a passenger who fled after crashing his vehicle early Tuesday morning into a house in Granada Hills. The collision was reported around 1:30 a.m. in the 11300 block of Balboa Boulevard. Police and firefighters arrived to find a vehicle crashed into and damaged a home, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. The passenger fled the scene on foot and left an injured injured in the car. Los Angeles Fire Department helped free to the man from the vehicle, according to the LAPD.

Police warned Venice residents Monday to lock their windows and doors after a prowler entered a woman's bedroom and stood over her bed with what appeared to be a knife, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. The intruder broke in through an unlocked window at a studio apartment at 28th Street and Speedway about 3:10 a.m. Monday.

Los Angeles police are looking for the people involved in a fight outside Dodger Stadium after Friday's playoff game that sent one fan to the hospital with critical injuries. Few details were available Monday, including the gender or age of the person who was injured. Buy a gun in Los Angeles, pay an extra fee? Two Los Angeles lawmakers want to explore taxing handguns and ammunition sales in a bid to reduce gun violence. Los Angeles City Councilmen Paul Koretz and Paul Krekorian last week submitted a motion asking for a report on the proposal, which Koretz estimates could bring about $1 million a year. Koretz compared the proposed tax with a cigarette tax or pollution mitigation fee.

Gov. Brown signs broad sweep of bills into law
Gov. Jerry Brown signed measures Friday designed to boost water conservation in the face of California's lingering drought and to build on healthcare benefits and other protection for people in the country illegally. Acting on a slate of water bills, Brown approved a proposal meant to ensure that residents who replace lawns with drought-friendly alternatives don't run afoul of local regulations. It prohibits cities and counties from enacting rules that ban the installation of artificial turf or drought-tolerant landscaping at residential properties.

Daniel Borenstein: Latest Chuck Reed pension initiatives address attorney general's past concerns
Former San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed has twice rolled out statewide pension reform initiatives. Each time, Attorney General Kamala Harris effectively killed the measures before Reed could start collecting signatures to place them on the ballot. This time might be different. On Monday, Reed and former San Diego Councilman Carl DeMaio submitted two new initiative proposals. Harris must now write the ballot title and summary.
