L.A. set to settle with man wrongly convicted of killing mother
A man who was wrongfully convicted of killing his mother has reached a tentative settlement in his lawsuit against the city of Los Angeles in which he accused police detectives of fabricating evidence to put him behind bars for 26 years. A spokesman for the city attorney's office did not disclose the terms of the settlement on Monday, saying such information typically remains secret until the Los Angeles City Council votes to approve the agreement.

Violent Crime In Hollywood Has Increased By 21% In The Last Year
Since last October, violent crime in Hollywood has gone up 21 percent. With more and more people moving into the area, city officials are trying to figure out how to manage the residential boom and the nightclub scene. LAPD Capt. Peter Zarcone told the L.A. Times that most of the crimes come courtesy of drunk people spilling out of Hollywood's many bars and clubs. Violent crime has spiked 21 percent through October 10 compared to the same time last year. Citywide, aggravated assaults are up 36.8 percent.

SUV Crashes Into Power Pole, Driver Critically Injured
An SUV driver was critically injured early Tuesday morning after he struck a power pole and crashed into a residence in South Los Angeles, police said. The crash was reported around 2:30 a.m. near the intersection of 82nd and Hoover streets, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Woman Shot Near Peace Rally in South LA
Around the corner from a rally trying to "shine a light on the spike in violence in South Los Angeles," a woman was shot to death through her front door, the Los Angeles Police Department confirmed Monday night. The woman was fatally shot and died at the hospital. The shooting occurred in the 9300 block of South Main Street. She was standing inside of the townhouse when bullets came through the front door.

Mayor Escorted Out of South LA Town Hall For Safety, Protesters Surround and Walk on Garcetti's Car
Black Lives Matter protesters surrounded Mayor Eric Garcetti's car following a town hall meeting in a South LA church that ended with the mayor getting shouted out of the building Monday night. "If you are interested in having a civil conversation, we are going to ask you to remain here, if not, I am going to ask you to leave," Reverend Kelvin Sauls of the Holman United Methodist Church said to the crowd amid the chanting. "Black lives, they matter here!" rumbled throughout the church before Garcetti was escorted by LAPD for his own safety.

Growing homeless problem prompts HUD leader, local officials to meet
Amid growing concern about the problem of homelessness in Los Angeles, the secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development is set to meet with local elected officials about the issue. Secretary Julian Castro will be in Los Angeles on Tuesday to meet with Mayor Eric Garcetti, City Council members and county supervisors, HUD spokesman George Gonzalez said.

Dan Walters: CalPERS may be reforming
Sixteen years after it abetted one of the most irresponsible political acts in state history – a massive increase in public pension benefits – the California Public Employees' Retirement System may finally be reforming. In 1999, CalPERS told the Legislature that the benefit increase state worker unions were seeking could be financed from investment earnings with no effect on taxpayers. Much later, it was revealed that CalPERS' actuaries had provided several scenarios, but its union-dominated board adopted the most optimistic, giving the Legislature and then-Gov. Gray Davis the justification (and political cover) they wanted to boost benefits.
