On-Duty San Bernardino Police Officer Killed In Traffic Collison
An on-duty San Bernardino police officer was killed in a traffic collision involving a suspected drunk driver in Ontario early Thursday morning, police said. The two-vehicle crash occurred shortly after 2 a.m. at Etiwanda and San Bernardino avenues, just outside of the Auto Club Speedway. The police officer had just dropped off a prisoner at West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga when he was broadsided by the suspected drunk driver. San Bernardino police said their officer had the right of way and the alleged DUI driver ran a red light, causing the crash.

Anti-bullying campaign gets personal for LAPD and students
An LA Unified anti-bullying campaign for at-risk youth that includes an innovative arts program culminated today in an emotional speech by a father, whose 11-year-old son killed himself after being bullied. Students, teachers, even police officers had tears in their eyes at Bret Hart Preparatory Middle School. For some of the officers, it got personal. Los Angeles Police Detective Donna Wheeler rolled up her sleeve and showed the tattoo she and about half a dozen others now wear to show support for the father's anti-bullying campaign. It's a heart with the initials TS, for Ty Smalley.

LAPD Searching For Suspects In Santa Monica Shooting
On September 28, 2013, at around 2:19 a.m., 31-year-old Edwin Jurado was fatally shot to death after engaging in an altercation with two unknown suspects. Jurado was killed as he was walking away from Cefetal, a restaurant located on the corner of Santa Monica Boulevard and Edgemont Street. He was pronounced dead on the scene. Detectives from the Los Angele Police Department's Robbery Homicide Division are currently asking for the community's assistance in identifying the two suspects responsible for the murder as pictured in the LAPD's drawing.

Man Fights Back in Studio City Carjacking Attempt
In a quiet Studio City neighborhood, two friends said they were sitting in a Lexus talking when three robbers opened the back door of the car, piled in and demanded money. The attempted carjacking ended with one of the men getting shot and a manhunt for the carjackers ensued. The Los Angeles Police Department responded to the scene of the attempted carjacking in the 4300 block of Babcock Avenue near Woodbridge Street.

Man in Suit and Tie Sought in Downtown LA Shooting Death
The Los Angeles Police Department was investigating a homicide after reports of a person shot in downtown Los Angeles Wednesday. Officers were searching for a man in a suit and tie, about 30-35 years old, LAPD said. "Like a gunshot," Julio Nieto, who was working in the building in a suite nearby, said as he described the shooting. "I went to see - I couldn't see anything."

Student shot and killed by police after stabbing four on UC Merced campus
A male UC Merced student stabbed four people with a large hunting knife on the campus Wednesday morning before he was shot and killed by university police, authorities said. The victims' injuries do not appear to be life-threatening, officials said. The suspect's identity is known to authorities but had not been publicly released because they were still trying to notify his family, said Merced County Sheriff Vern Warnke.

California Crime Laws Have Gone Too Far, Are Due for Overhaul: Gov. Jerry Brown
Gov. Jerry Brown used a forum for federal judges Wednesday to make the case in strong terms that California's crime laws have gone too far and inmate behavior should play a greater role in determining the length of a prison stay. Over the course of half an hour, he outlined his belief that the fixed-length criminal sentences he approved as governor three decades ago have glutted state prisons with long-stay offenders.
