Remembering fallen LAPD officer: Highway dedication
A section of a highway in the La Mirada area will be dedicated Friday in memory of the first Los Angeles Police Department undercover officer to be killed in the line of duty. Detective Gerald “Blackie” Sawyer, 32, was gunned down on this date in 1973. The ceremony to dedicate the Gerald “Blackie” Sawyer Memorial Highway will be held in the city of La Mirada, where Sawyer lived with his wife and children and was an active member of the community.

LAPD Seeks Identity of 3 Pick Pocket Suspects
Los Angeles Police Department detectives are asking for the public's help to identify three pick pocket suspects. Around 6:20 p.m. on Oct. 23, three suspects entered a business located in the 8500 block of Beverly Boulevard. The first suspect followed a victim around the business. The suspect then stood next to the victim and appeared to be shopping while attempting to remove the victim's wallet from her purse.

Two Teens Shot, One Killed Near Apartment Complex
Two teens were shot, and one killed, near an apartment complex in the Pico-Union area Sunday evening, the Los Angeles Police Department said. "Generally, this is a very quiet area, so it's kind of unique to have something happen here," Brian Pratts of the LAPD said. LAPD said there are gangs in the area, but as of late, the community was very quiet.

Echo Park shooting leaves one man dead
Police this morning are investigating the fatal shooting of a man Friday night in the 1800 block of Echo Park Avenue. The shooting was reported at about 8:20 p.m., said Lt. Richard Parks with the Northeast Division. The shooting victim, however, had been taken to a hospital, where he died with multiple gunshot wounds, Parks said. An LAPD spokesman said the victim, a male Latino, was shot three times in the chest.

LAPD seizes 6 guns, arrests 4 in Van Nuys-Arleta gang sweep
Officers from the Los Angeles Police Department's gang unit swept through the San Fernando Valley Friday morning and served search warrants on 15 locations, a raid that resulted in four arrests and the confiscation of six weapons, authorities said. The raid, conducted on locations mostly in the Van Nuys and Arleta areas, was in response to the near-fatal shooting of a female gang member in Reseda on Aug. 3.

Detectives Ask For Public's Help to Solve Christmas Eve Murder
On Christmas Eve 2011, Eva Tice was brutally slain on San Pedro's Pacific Avenue on her way home from church. The 60-year-old woman was mentally disabled, and people who knew her remember her as always smiling, happy and eager to help. Now, they hope that by telling her story, her killer will finally be caught. It's not hard to figure out why people were drawn to Eva Tice.

How California cops are using mobile fingerprinting and facial recognition devices
Police departments in California are identifying suspects using mobile biometric devices that scan fingerprints, faces and even tattoos. The Electronic Frontier Foundation, in a joint project with MuckRock, filed public records requests around the country to learn how police departments are using mobile biometric technology. More than 30 agencies have supplied thousands of pages of documents, including nine police agencies in California. PC Magazine covered the findings, summarized by EFF here.

City Council sets stage for a do-over on 20-year traffic plan
Just a few months ago, dozens of activists appeared before the Los Angeles City Council to speak out on Mobility Plan 2035, the sweeping proposal for adding hundreds of miles of new bus- and bike-only lanes. On Tuesday, partisans on both sides will get another chance to sound off — but not because the council wanted another airing of the controversial plan, which seeks to reduce Angelenos' reliance on the automobile.
