On body cameras, LAPD gets mixed review from civil-rights coalition
The Los Angeles Police Department was among several police agencies surveyed that were fully credited for making its body-worn camera policy, which is online, “publicly and readily available” in contrast to cities such as New York, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Baltimore and Detroit which either did not have their policies online when evaluated or did but they were not easy to find, according to the report. LAPD was also fully credited for limiting officer discretion by requiring officers to record the entire contact of “any investigative or enforcement activity involving a member of the public,” including pedestrian stops, foot pursuits, arrests and uses of force. The department requires officers who fail to record a required activity to document their reason in writing in multiple reports and systems, the report noted.

Man grabbed bean-bag shotgun, fired shot before LAPD killed him, police say
The man whom Los Angeles police fatally shot in the Lake Balboa neighborhood had grabbed a bean-bag shotgun from one of the officers approaching him and fired at least one round, LAPD Chief Charlie Beck said Tuesday. The man was identified as 34-year-old Miguel Cano, who was declared dead at 1:40 p.m. Monday from gunshot wounds, said Ed Winter, spokesman for the Los Angeles County coroner's office.

LAPD Says Several Men Just Released From Jail Robbed Gas Station
Los Angeles police believe a group of men robbed a gas station right after they were released from jail. Police released a security video showing two of the men wearing white bracelets, which they say are proof the men likely just walked out of the Men's Central Jail in Downtown L.A. Investigators said the men robbed a Chevron gas station a few blocks away from the jail.

Man's Body Found in Fridge in South L.A. Apartment: LAPD
Homicide investigators were responding to a South Los Angeles apartment after a man's body was found inside a refrigerator on Tuesday, according to LAPD. Workers were inside an apartment building in the 600 block of West 57th Street when they found the dead body about 10 a.m., according to Officer Mike Lopez with the Los Angeles Police Department's Media Relations Section.

North Hollywood and Koreatown Are Topping DUI Arrests In L.A. This Year
Slow your roll, North Hollywood and Koreatown. Data from the LAPD indicates these two areas have had the most DUI arrests in Los Angeles so far this year. There have been a total of 1,995 DUI arrests, 63 crashes and 17 deaths between January 1 and October 24, The Korea Times reports across L.A. Of these arrests, North Hollywood had 146 of them while the Olympic Division, which includes Koreatown, saw 126—that's a 10 percent increase from last year. There were no DUI-related crashes or deaths in the Olympic division.

Assemblyman Mike Gatto to honor memory of father killed two years ago
Assemblyman Mike Gatto, D-Los Angeles, will mark the two-year anniversary of his father's unsolved murder tomorrow by taking part in a candlelight vigil and procession in Silver Lake. Joseph Gatto, 78, was fatally shot Nov. 12, 2013, in his home in the 2800 block of Bright Lane in Silver Lake. He was a longtime public-school arts teacher, painter, jewelry-designer and author. Gatto was honored as California Arts Teacher of the Year in 1986, and was honored at the White House by Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush.

LA mayor stresses job creation at Veterans Day event in Sylmar
Jobs and lending a helping hand were the main themes Tuesday at a Veterans Day event at Los Angeles Mission College highlighted by a keynote address from Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti. More than 100 people attended the event in the Campus Center during which some of the college's veteran students were presented certificates thanking them for their military service.

LA officials launch campaign to encourage citizenship
"Protect Yourself: Citizenship Now!" — co-launched by L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti and County Supervisor Hilda Solis — is a committee of five organizations that provide citizenship-related services, including in Spanish and Asian Pacific Islander languages. The services are meant to help folks navigate the often cumbersome process of applying for and obtaining citizenship.

California Attorney General alerts public to scams targeting veterans
State Attorney General Kamala Harris has issued a consumer alert urging Californians to be on the lookout for “pension poaching” scams that target seniors who served in the military and their survivors. Harris said in the alert issued Tuesday that the scams prey on veterans by targeting financial assistance offered through the Veterans Administration Aid and Attendance Program, a program intended to provide pension benefits to financially disadvantaged wartime veterans and their survivors over 65 years old.
