As crime rises in Los Angeles, police, community take action
The LAPD has deployed hundreds of elite officers to crime hot spots, increased the number of officers walking the streets versus patrolling in cars, and created a community relationship division dedicated to building the public's trust in police officers. But Beck said his department can't solve the problem alone. "A lot of it is public will," he said. "A will of everyone in the city of Los Angeles to say, 'Enough is enough.'" Members of the community say they stepped up their own efforts when the crime numbers started going up.

From Ferguson to Minneapolis: Crisis of confidence plagues police in wake of deadly officer-involved shootings
One of the most critical issues facing law enforcement is playing out now in Minneapolis — what, when and how much information to make public in the aftermath of an officer-involved shooting. Authorities say 24-year-old Jamar Clark, a suspect in a domestic assault, was interfering with paramedics who were trying to treat his alleged victim early last Sunday when he scuffled with Minneapolis officers and was shot. Clark, who was unarmed, died one day later. Police have denied the accounts of some eyewitnesses who say that Clark was handcuffed before being shot once in the head.

State Government

On gun control, Newsom seems to be following Bloomberg's strategic lead
As he pushes a proposed ballot initiative cobbled together from gun-control bills that died in the Legislature or on the governor's desk, Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom frames the battle he hopes to wage next year as a personal one. "Since Sandy Hook, I have sat back as a father and been mesmerized by the inability of the federal government to do anything substantively on gun safety," he said in a recent telephone interview, referring to the 2012 shooting deaths of 26 children and staff at a Connecticut school.
