Investigators "can't rule anything out" yet as they search for a motive for Wednesday's mass shooting in San Bernardino, Rep. Adam Schiff, the senior Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, said Thursday. It's "possible" that "some combination of motivation" involving both a workplace dispute and terrorism prompted the shooting, Schiff said in an interview with CNN. He had been briefed on the progress of the investigation earlier in the morning, he said.

LAPD on Alert Following Mass Shooting in San Bernardino
Los Angeles police went on a modified tactical alert today in response to a mass shooting at a San Bernardino treatment center for people with developmental disabilities, while similar Southland facilities closed their doors for the day. The Los Angeles Police Department, which was already on heightened alert due to the recent Paris terror attacks, did not immediately mobilize or change its posture following the 11 a.m. shooting at the Inland Regional Center that killed 14 people and injured 17 others.

An unarmed man who lost a quarter of his skull after being shot by a Los Angeles police officer notified the city and police department on Wednesday that he plans to sue, claiming the shooting was part of a broad, disturbing pattern in the police force of the nation's second-largest city. Attorneys for Walter DeLeon, 49, filed the notice of claim in Los Angeles County Superior Court. The notice, a precursor to a lawsuit, accuses police Officer Cairo Palacios of shooting an unarmed DeLeon without warning on June 19 as he was on his regular evening walk to a popular park.

L.A. council supports exemption to ammunition law for retired, reserve police |
In a hotly contested move, Los Angeles lawmakers voted Wednesday to back an exemption that will allow some retired and reserve police officers to continue to possess firearm magazines that hold more than 10 rounds of ammunition — arguing that this would help protect the public from threats. The Los Angeles City Council voted 11-4 in favor of the exemptions to a citywide ban on such ammunition magazines passed earlier this year. Council members Mike Bonin, Paul Koretz, Nury Martinez and David Ryu opposed the proposed exemption.

L.A. County supervisors vote against selling 241 public housing units
Low-income tenants got a reprieve Tuesday when Los Angeles County supervisors voted to hold on to 241 units of public housing at sites dispersed around South L.A. that housing officials had planned to sell. The county has been running a deficit for years on maintenance of the so-called South Scattered Sites, which are set aside for extremely low-income families. The housing authority had proposed selling the units to a nonprofit or other private buyer, on the condition that they would be maintained at affordable rents for a mix of incomes for the next 55 years. The projected sale proceeds of $32 million would have then gone to building about 126 units of county-owned housing concentrated in one to three sites.

Does high court care what LA County thinks about immigration?
Does the U.S. Supreme Court care what the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors thinks about national immigration issues? Maybe some supervisors would like to think the answer to that question is “yes” as supervisors are signing on to an amicus brief urging the U.S. Supreme Court to review the decision blocking President Barack Obama's executive action on immigration.
