Bomb Squad Responds After Suspicious Package Reported at El Al Cargo Facility Near LAX
Authorities gave the all clear after a suspicious package at an El Al cargo facility near Los Angeles International Airport prompted a response from an LAPD bomb squad on Wednesday morning. The bomb squad arrived at the facility — located at 5758 Century Boulevard — around 6:30 a.m., a tweet from the LAX Police Department indicated.

Fake Hollywood fondling cop suspect held on $1 million bail
An Orange County man who allegedly impersonated a police officer while fondling two women in separate incidents in the Hollywood area was in custody today, authorities reported. Joseph Christopher Moore, 39, of Anaheim was taken into custody on Tuesday at his residence and booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon -- a firearm, the Los Angeles Police Department reported. Moore was being held on $1 million bail. According to police, the suspect approached the first victim in the 6100 block of De Longpre Avenue on Nov. 24 as she was searching for her keys. He produced a badge and identification, told the victim to get against a wall and then searched her while fondling her breasts and buttocks, police said.

Murdered homeless vet was featured in LA Times story on homelessness
A 66-year-old homeless man who was found fatally stabbed under a freeway underpass in Echo Park had been featured in a Los Angeles Times article in June on a city plan to crack down on homeless encampments, according to the newspaper. Charles Smith was found about 11 a.m. Monday under the Hollywood (101) Freeway underpass at Alvarado Street, Los Angeles Police Department Detective Ray Martinez told The Times.

LA sets aside $12M for El Nino homeless housing
The city of Los Angeles has set aside $12.4 million to help house the homeless and provide more temporary shelter during El Nino storms expected this winter, Mayor Eric Garcetti and Los Angeles City Council members announced Wednesday. The funding, proposed by Garcetti and approved Wednesday by the City Council, includes $10 million for “rapid re-housing” subsidies for nearly 1,000 transients to help them with rent or move-in costs.

State of emergency needed for Porter Ranch gas leak, Supervisor Antonovich says
County Supervisor Michael Antonovich will ask his colleagues next week to proclaim a local state of emergency in response to the ongoing natural gas leak that has generated anger among Porter Ranch residents, some of whom have temporarily relocated from the area. “This action will ask for state and federal assistance to provide for our residents in the Porter Ranch area with additional air monitoring and help with efforts to cap the well,” Antonovich said.

Venice activists sue city of Los Angeles over beach curfew
Citing the right to public commons stretching back to the Roman Empire, Venice activists filed a suit Wednesday to strike down the city of Los Angeles' 27-year-old overnight beach curfew. The lawsuit contends that the midnight-to-5-a.m. ban on sleeping, strolling, surfing or fishing on the sands was adopted in defiance of the state Coastal Commission's sole jurisdiction over the shoreline, and asks the court to issue an injunction to stop enforcement of the measure.
