$5.7-million verdict against 2 LAPD officers will stand, Supreme Court rules
The Supreme Court has let stand a $5.7-million judgment against two Los Angeles Police Department officers for shooting a fleeing gang member who they believed was carrying a gun. After considering the case for weeks, the justices without comment turned down an appeal from Los Angeles City Atty. Michael Feuer. The city's lawyers said the two police officers believed the fleeing suspect posed a danger, and therefore were justified in shooting to stop him.

Homeowner Fatally Shoots Suspected Burglar in Arlington Heights: LAPD
A homeowner fatally shot an intruder who had tried to burglarize a home in the Arlington Heights neighborhood of Los Angeles on Monday morning, according to LAPD. About 8:35 a.m., officers responded to an assault with a deadly weapon call in the 1700 block of Fifth Avenue, Los Angeles Police Department Officer Kim said. When two male intruders entered the home and allegedly attempted to burglarize it, the homeowner pulled out a firearm and shot one of the men, police on scene said. The homeowner called 911.

28-Year-Old Man Fatally Shot In Koreatown; Suspect Sought
An investigation is underway after a 28-year-old man was shot and killed in Koreatown on Sunday night, police said. The possibly gang-related shooting occurred near the intersection of S. Gramercy Place and Wilshire Boulevard at about 9:40 p.m. The suspect walked up to the victim, shot him multiple times and fled the scene, the LAPD said. Peter Yu was pronounced dead at the scene. A description of the suspect was not immediately available.

Man's body pulled from MacArthur Park Lake
The body of a man was recovered from MacArthur Park Lake on Monday and the cause of death may be drowning, police said. The 30-year-old man was found in the lake about 7:18 a.m. in the 2000 block of West 7th Street in Westlake, said Sgt. Stacey Vandersall of the Los Angeles Police Department's Rampart Division.

$50,000 reward offered in Pacoima slaying of teen
Los Angeles police and relatives of a slain 15-year-old boy announced a $50,000 reward Monday aimed at bringing his killer to justice. Police said they hope the reward leads to help from the public in identifying the suspects responsible for the shooting death of Willie Barrios at Van Nuys Boulevard and Norris Avenue at about 2:20 a.m. Oct. 26. Two suspects walked up and shot the victim in what investigators believe is a gang-related attack.

City Council considers $31M for LAPD body cameras
Under a plan endorsed by L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti, the Los Angeles Police Department would spend $31 million over five years to equip 7,000 officers with body-worn cameras. The L.A. City Council is scheduled to consider the plan Wednesday. If approved as expected, the LAPD would become the biggest city in the nation to outfit its street cops with body cameras.

CalPERS shelves controversial private equity policy
The state's biggest public pension fund has repeatedly missed a key performance goal for its controversial private equity investments. But a CalPERS committee said Monday that the fund's staff could not strip language from a written policy that required them to aim to meet that benchmark – returns roughly 3% higher than the stock market to compensate for private equity's risk. By voice vote, the committee defeated the proposal to change the policy so that the new objective would have been simply “to enhance” the pension fund's private equity returns.
