BARRICADE SITUATION FORCES EVACUATIONS IN WESTLAKE DISTRICT
Evacuations were underway in the Westlake District Thursday morning after two possibly armed suspects barricaded themselves inside an apartment as police attempted to serve search warrants.The attempt by officers from the LAPD's Olympic Division to serve the warrants took place around 4:55 a.m. near S. Hoover and San Marino streets, LAPD spokeswoman Officer Liliana Preciado said.

L.A. Sheriff's Department blamed for rise in accidental gunshots by deputies
The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department failed to properly train deputies before equipping them with a new type of handgun, contributing to a dramatic rise in accidental shootings that continues to put officers and the public at risk, the agency's watchdog said Wednesday. In addition to singling out inadequate training, a report issued by the department's inspector general faulted deputies for violating basic firearm safety rules and making mistakes when using a new light attached to the gun, the Smith & Wesson M&P 9mm.

Bomb Squad Deems Unattended Bag Left In Terminal 4 At LAX To Be Safe
Operations resumed at Los Angeles Interantioal Airport Wednesday after a bomb squad determined a suspicious bag that was left within Terminal 4 was safe. Around 11:00 a.m., airport police halted screening while authorities searched the terminal. Traffic was closed on the departures level while motorists were diverted to the arrivals level as an alternate route.

LAUSD SCHOOLS LOSE $29M, REOPEN UNDER INCREASED SECURITY AFTER THREAT
The Los Angeles Unified School District lost $29 million in state funding following an anonymous email threat of a large-scale jihadi attack that prompted a district-wide closure. State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson said the funds could be reimbursed through a special Average Daily Attendance credit for days lost due to an emergency closure.

San Francisco police chief urges stun gun use after shooting
San Francisco is one of only two of the nation's largest cities in the country that do not equip officers with stun guns, a situation the city's police chief wants to change after police fatally shot a knife-wielding stabbing suspect last week. Police Chief Greg Suhr publicly renewed a call Wednesday night to add the weapon to his department's arsenal, exactly one week after five officers shot and killed 26-year-old Mario Woods in the city's Bayview neighborhood. The shooting was captured on video and circulated widely online, fueling community protests and calls for the chief's resignation.

Supporters of former Undersheriff Paul Tanaka awarded $800,000 for alleged retaliation
Shortly after going on a fishing trip with then-Undersheriff Paul Tanaka in June 2013, Capt. Chuck Antuna was transferred to a job that increased his daily commute by hundreds of miles. In the Los Angeles County Sheriff 's Department, such a transfer is commonly known as “freeway therapy.” Antuna sued the county and then-Sheriff Lee Baca , alleging that Baca transferred him because of his support for Tanaka, who planned to run for sheriff against Baca.

Breaking News: Poll Shows Pension Ballot Measures Already in Trouble
A pair of potential ballot initiatives written to overhaul California's public pensions could face a rough road, according to a new poll. The results from a Capital & Main-David Binder Research poll of 500 likely voters shows that if the election were held today, the numbers of those voting for the measures and those against them appear to be dead even. Those numbers are not what pension-reduction advocates had hoped for going into the 2016 election cycle.

$5 MILLION PLAN AIMS TO HELP LOS ANGELES COUNTY HOMELESS YOUTH
Los Angeles County is hoping $5 million will help reduce homelessness among young people. The county Board of Supervisors voted on Tuesday to set aside the money.Supervisors Hilda Solis and Sheila Kuehl, who co-authored the proposal, say they believe investing in solutions now could prevent youths living on the streets from becoming the chronic homeless of the future.

29,000 Westside LADWP Customers Temporarily Without Power After Fire at Utility Yard
About 29,000 customers on Los Angeles' Westside were without power on Wednesday after a small fire at a LADWP yard knocked out service and also left traffic lights dark just before rush hour. Power was restored about an hour and 15 minutes after it went out, according to a DWP spokeswoman.
