Parole denied for man in killing of LAPD detective
A former boxer who conspired to assassinate a Los Angeles police detective 30 years ago in front of his 6-year-old son was denied parole from prison Tuesday, reversing an earlier decision to set him free that drew outrage from family members, prosecutors and police. But Voltaire Alphonse Williams, one of six men accused of killing Detective Thomas C. Williams in a hail of machine gun fire in front of a Canoga Park church school, will soon get another parole hearing.

Robert Durst to Be Extradited to L.A. for Prosecution on Murder Charge: DA
New York real estate heir Robert Durst will return to Los Angeles to face a murder charge in the summer in the killing of his writer friend Susan Berman, prosecutors announced Tuesday. In a statement, the Los Angeles County district attorney's office said it had reached a deal with Durst's attorney to have him extradited from New Orleans by Aug. 18.

Bicyclist Critically Injured in Hit-and-Run Crash
Officers were searching for a driver who struck a bicyclist in Van Nuys leaving him in critical condition Tuesday night, police said. The collision was reported just before midnight near Saticoy Street and Woodley Avenue, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

LA Airport Police officers union calls for more regulation of drones
The union representing Los Angeles Airport Police officers called on Tuesday for more regulation of drones, with holiday sales of the unmanned flying machines expected to push the number of units sold above the 1 million mark. The demand came one day after the Federal Aviation Administration began a drone-registration database. The American Alliance of Airport Police Officers called the database “a positive step,” but “not enough.”

Video prompts calls for D.A. to reopen case of fatal shooting by L.A. County sheriff's deputies
The video showed a life-and-death struggle between two Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies and 23-year-old Noel Aguilar on the driveway of an apartment complex in Long Beach. As the deputies tried to clap handcuffs on Aguilar, who was resisting arrest and was believed to have a gun, one deputy shot at Aguilar but hit his partner instead. Aguilar continued to wrestle with the deputies.

More People Buying Guns This Holiday Season
Since the San Bernardino mass shooting, a gun store owner says he's seen an increase in the purchase of guns. “I'd say about 20 percent of our customers are new gun owners,” explains Jeff Bregman, who owns a store in Glendale. And some of those new guns are wrapped up as holiday presents.

Judge Rules in Favor of S.F. Cops Who Sent Bigoted Texts
San Francisco Superior Court Judge Ernest Goldsmith ruled Monday that the Police Department waited too long to pursue disciplining a group of officers who swapped bigoted text messages and that the officers cannot be fired or otherwise punished for the alleged misconduct. Goldsmith ruled in favor of nine officers challenging the city and Police Department's attempt to mete out discipline for a variety of racist, homophobic and otherwise inappropriate messages.

Lyft allowed to pick up passengers at Los Angeles International Airport
Beginning Wednesday, Lyft will be allowed to pick up passengers at Los Angeles International Airport just in time for the holidays. Previously, the ride-hailing service could only drop people off. The company will pay the airport $4 per trip. It's part of an agreement the city approved earlier this year.

City attorney demands faster relocation of residents near Porter Ranch gas leak
The Los Angeles city attorney's office sought a court order Tuesday to move Porter Ranch residents into temporary housing more quickly to avoid fumes from a massive natural gas leak. With 2,684 families of the northwest San Fernando Valley community awaiting relocation, the city wants a “special master” appointed to oversee the task, which is currently in the hands of Southern California Gas Co. The gas company owns the well in Aliso Canyon that has been leaking massive amounts of methane since Oct. 23.
