Crime in LAPDs Harbor Area rises nearly 20 percent
Major crime in the Harbor Area rose nearly 20 percent in 2015, a statistic about double the average across the Los Angeles Police Department's jurisdiction, according to statistics released this week. LAPD crime reports through Dec. 26 show the numbers of homicides, robberies and aggravated assaults increased sharply in the Harbor Division's jurisdiction, as did burglaries, auto thefts, thefts from vehicles and other thefts.

Carjacking suspect tied to violent crimes and Long Beach standoff has died, police say
A carjacking suspect who police say shot two people and stabbed another before shooting himself in the head at the end of a wild pursuit Friday has died, Los Angeles police said. Daniel Ramirez died shortly before 6 p.m. Saturday, Officer Mike Lopez said. Ramirez was identified Saturday as an accomplice to Artyom Gasparyan, a 32-year-old man who police believe is responsible for a monthlong series of violent crimes — including robbery, carjacking, attempted murder and a fatal shooting — stretching across Los Angeles County.

In Los Angeles, sex trafficking doesn't look like it does in the movies
It's a warm summer evening in July, and Lt. Andre Dawson of the Los Angeles Police Department is steering his blacked-out SUV across South Los Angeles Street. Skid Row is an emblem of L.A.'s notorious designation as the nation's unsheltered homeless capital: the city has 82,000 homeless on any given night, and most people don't realize that up to one in eight of the homeless are unaccompanied minors, according to the Institute for the Study of Homelessness and Poverty at the Weingart Center.

Chicago Police Shot Fewer People in 2015
While the video release of a Chicago police officer's shooting of Laquan McDonald prompted a domino effect of change, including the ousting of the police superintendent and a federal civil rights investigation, the department finished 2015 on an ironic note: Officers shot the fewest people that they have in years. Chicago police officers shot 22 people in 2015, eight of them fatally. That's a 40 percent drop in the total number of people shot compared with 2014, when 37 people were hit by police gunfire and 16 of them were killed, according to department figures.

The FBI has taken the lead in monitoring an armed standoff in Oregon where a group of militia members, along with some members of the family of Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy, are occupying a building on federal land at a national wildlife refuge. The FBI is "working with the Harney County Sheriff's Office, Oregon State Police and other local and state law enforcement agencies to bring a peaceful resolution to the situation,” the agency said in a statement.

Minimum Wage, Homelessness Likely To Be Among Major Issues For L.A. In Year Ahead
The minimum wage and homelessness likely will continue to be among the major issues affecting Los Angeles in the year ahead. While most of the action around minimum wage happened in 2015, the effects of the measure adopted by the city to raise the wage to $15 per hour by 2020 will start to be felt in the upcoming year.

Los Angeles County winter shelters for homeless hit capacity as chilly nights continue
The line forms in the frigid night almost an hour before opening time. Most of the homeless men and women who shiver and wait outside the National Guard Armory in Sylmar carry just one bag each. Some have nothing. Others in line are those who are often reluctant to leave their belongings and encampments to stay at an emergency winter shelter such as the one set up at the armory.
