Police Shoot Wanted Murder Suspect on SoCal Freeway After Chase
A manhunt for a wanted murder suspect ended violently Monday on a Southern California freeway when police shot the man they suspect in a series of crimes that started Dec. 6. The man police shot was Artyom Gasparyan, 32, who was wanted for murder, attempted murder, carjacking and robbery spanning Burbank, Panorama City and the Carson area, said Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck.

After Pursuit, LAPD Searches for Driver of Stolen Vehicle in East Los Angeles
LAPD officers were searching for a driver who ran from a stolen vehicle after a pursuit ended in the East Los Angeles area on Monday afternoon. The chase went from surface streets onto the eastbound 10 Freeway, where the motorist drove the wrong way, against traffic, about 3 p.m.

LAPD body camera plan comes into focus
Sgt. Dan Gomez of the Los Angeles Police Department's tactical technology section holds out his smartphone to show the video he's recording using the body camera on the front of his uniform. The camera he's wearing is a small black plastic box made by Taser International, which captures everything in a 130-degree field of vision. LAPD plans to outfit every officer with a body camera.

British man pleads not guilty to kidnapping 2-year-old Sherman Oaks daughter
A British man who vanished with his 2-year-old daughter during a supervised visit on Christmas Eve and was found with the toddler in Palm Springs a week ago pleaded not guilty Monday to kidnapping and related charges. Jack Joseph Perry, 31, appeared in blue jail clothes and handcuffs to enter his plea to felony charges of kidnapping, child stealing and criminal threats and three misdemeanor counts of violating a restraining order issued in his divorce proceedings.

'Failure of leadership' at the Orange County D.A.'s office led to informant issues, report says
A failure of leadership” at the Orange County district attorney's office led to repeated problems with the handling of jailhouse informants and helped erode confidence in criminal cases that rely on their testimony, according to a report made public Monday. The findings, presented by legal experts on a special committee established by Dist. Atty. Tony Rackauckas, described the office as functioning “as a ship without a rudder” and faulted some of its prosecutors for adopting a “win-at-all-costs mentality.”

As Oregon Occupation Grows, Rancher and His Son Quietly Surrender in San Pedro
As activists continued an armed occupation of a federal wildlife refuge, the Oregon rancher and his son who helped inspire the protest quietly surrendered to prison authorities Monday in Southern California. Dwight Hammond, 73, and his son Steven Hammond, 46, were ordered back to prison when a judge decided they had not spent enough time behind bars for setting a pair of fires they said was intended to reduce the growth of invasive plants and protect their property from wildfires.

Garcetti nominates new executive to run Planning Department
Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti has chosen a Pasadena official to run the city's Planning Department, a move that comes as neighborhood activists are growing more aggressive in their efforts to block large-scale development projects. Vince Bertoni, head of Pasadena's Planning and Community Development Department, was nominated Monday to replace Michael LoGrande, L.A.'s departing planning director.

Chargers, Raiders, Rams submit application to relocate to LA
The San Diego Chargers, Oakland Raiders and St. Louis Rams each submitted to the National Football League applications to relocate to Los Angeles, the NFL confirmed Monday night. The NFL issued a statement saying the applications will be reviewed this week by league staff and committees that will meet in New York on Wednesday and Thursday. The applications will be presented for consideration at a league meeting in Houston Jan. 12-13.

State legislators seek $2 billion for homeless housing
Alarmed by the state's growing homeless population, California lawmakers on Monday proposed a $2 billion funding plan to build thousands of housing units for mentally ill persons sleeping on the streets. Against the backdrop of downtown Los Angeles' Skid Row, state Senate President pro Tempore Kevin de León, D-Los Angeles, and other members of the senate announced new legislation to help build between 10,000-14,000 housing units.
