Police: Botched Pot Deal Allegedly Led To Fatal Shooting Of Teen In Marina Del Rey
Officials say a teen who was fatally shot in Marina del Rey Wednesday evening while she sat in a vehicle outside a strip mall was the victim of a drug deal gone sour. Authorities said Kristine Carman was with her older sister and the sister's boyfriend when they set up an online deal to sell two pounds of marijuana.

Security guard shot during Chinatown jewelry store robbery
Los Angeles police are searching for three suspects suspected of shooting a security guard in the arm during a robbery at a jewelry store in Chinatown Thursday morning. The incident occurred at Kim Phuoc Jewelry near N. Broadway and Alpine Street at about 11 a.m. Witnesses said two armed men entered the jewelry store and at one point got into a shootout with the security guard.

Police strategize to address crime increases
Police are grappling with ways to reduce crime after statistics released last week for 2015 showed violent crime increased citywide by 19.9 percent, and property crime rose 10.3 percent. At the Hollywood and Wilshire Divisions, the numbers were lower than the citywide average, but both divisions experienced an increase in violent and property crimes. The command staff at both police stations said they aim to reverse the trend and are working on new approaches to fighting crime.

Coroner's Office Veteran Accused Of Sexually Battering Co-Worker
Authorities say a veteran employee of the LA County Coroner's Office sexually battered a colleague. Detectives with the Los Angeles Police Department Robbery-Homicide Division's Special Assault Section are conducting an investigation involving 46-year-old Ryan Hays. Officials say Hays is a nine year employee of the Coroner's Office.

Search underway for 91-year-old driver with dementia
A Silver Alert was issued on Los Angeles freeways after a 91-year-old man suffering from Alzheimer's and dementia went missing.According to the California Highway Patrol, Apolonio Gomez may be driving a silver 2013 Honda Accord with license number 6YGH760. Officials said he was last seen in the 5500 block of Marmion Way in Highland Park at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

New CA Law Allows Judges to Take Guns Away From Potential Killers
City Attorney Mike Feuer was joined by gun violence survivors and family members of victims on Thursday to discuss a new state law that allows judges to take firearms away from individuals considered likely to commit violent acts. Under California's Gun Violence Restraining Order, which went into effect this year, family members or law enforcement officials are now able to petition a judge for a "gun violence restraining order'' to disarm individuals who are a risk to others, according to Feuer.

Philadelphia officer ambushed in cruiser, suspect arrested
A Philadelphia police officer was ambushed by a man while sitting in his marked cruiser, and was in stable condition Friday after being shot three times in his left arm, officials said. Police Commissioner Richard Ross said the suspect fired 13 shots that hit Officer Jessie Hartnett and his car late Thursday. He said the officer returned fire, hitting his assailant at least three times.

Seeking support for gun actions, Obama tears into the NRA
President Barack Obama tore into the National Rifle Association on Thursday as he sought support for his actions on gun control, accusing the powerful lobby group of peddling an "imaginary fiction" that he said has distorted the national debate about gun violence. In a prime-time, televised town hall meeting, Obama dismissed what he called a "conspiracy" alleging that the federal government - and Obama in particular - wants to seize all firearms as a precursor to imposing martial law.

Mayor to Announce Flood Protection Measures
Mayor Eric Garcetti plans to announce measures to improve flood protection on the Los Angeles River during El Nino. The mayor and the Los Angeles District Commander of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will discuss the measures at a 10 a.m. news conference. Details regarding the announcement were not immediately available. The announcements comes after a week of El Nino-driven storms that pounded Southern California, flooding streets and triggering landslides.

New cost estimates for homeless plan put L.A. officials on the spot
Los Angeles has struggled for decades to conquer homelessness, only to see the problem grow worse in recent years as tent-and-tarpaulin shantytowns have taken root in neighborhoods from Venice to Boyle Heights. Elected city officials have said that solving nation's worst homelessness crisis is among their top priorities, but they have devoted comparatively little money toward housing and services, including $30 million this fiscal year.
