LAPD Chief recommends charges for officer in Venice shooting
The Los Angeles police chief has recommended criminal charges against an officer who shot and killed an unarmed homeless man. The decision came after investigators concluded that Brendon Glenn was on his stomach trying to push himself up on May 5 when Officer Clifford Proctor shot the 29-year-old New York native in the back, Lt. John Jenal, a police spokesman, said Monday.

Crime spree suspect had outstanding warrants in 2 attempted murder cases
A man accused in a violent monthlong crime spree that ended with a wrong-way crash on the 5 Freeway in Sun Valley and a police shooting had outstanding warrants in two attempted murder cases, a district attorney's spokeswoman said Monday. No new charges have yet been filed against 32-year-old Artyom Gasparyan, D.A.'s spokeswoman Jane Robison said. He remains hospitalized and in police custody, and Robison said she did not know when he would be formally charged and arraigned.

Possible narcotics suspect leads police on brief chase in South LA
Police PIT maneuvered a possible narcotics suspect during a brief chase that ended on the northbound 110 Fwy in South LA. The pursuit of the suspect, who was driving a silver Nissan Sentra, began on the 605 North near Katella Avenue around 2:30 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol. CHP authorities were successful in their PIT maneuver shortly before 3 p.m. just south of Century Boulevard, where the suspect eventually surrendered to police.

San Fernando chase suspect shot to death by police
A man was shot to death by San Fernando police following a short chase that ended in a crash on Monday. According to San Fernando police, the pursuit lasted for about a block before the suspect crashed into another car near the intersection of San Fernando Road and Hubbard Street. That's when the pursuing officer opened fire, and the suspect was killed. The suspect's identity was not immediately released. Authorities described him as being in his 50s.

LA supervisors debate who should serve as sheriff watchdogs
Amid many efforts to reform the troubled Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, the L.A. County Board of Supervisors Tuesday will discuss who should sit on a newly created Civilian Oversight Commission. One key point of debate is whether former deputies will serve on the nine-member panel, all to be appointed by the board. While a group of supervisors believes ex-cops could provide a valuable perspective on the panel, the idea has irked the activists who originally organized for civilian oversight.

Trial of Freddie Gray van driver delayed by appeals court
A Maryland appeals court postponed the trial of a police van driver charged with second-degree murder in the death of Freddie Gray, saying it needs to address whether another Baltimore officer should be compelled to testify against Caesar Goodson. Jury selection for Goodson's trial was supposed to start Monday. Prosecutors have indicated that testimony from Officer William Porter, whose trial ended in a hung jury last month, is crucial to their case against Goodson.

Man charged with shooting Boston officer held on $1.5M bail Video included
A man charged with shooting a Boston police officer in the leg last week has been held on $1.5 million bail. Grant Headley was arraigned Monday in Dorchester Municipal Court on two sets of charges: distribution of a Class B substance as a second or subsequent offense for a Jan. 5 incident; and unlawful possession of a firearm as a second or subsequent offense, unlawful possession of ammunition, unlawfully carrying a loaded firearm, unlawful possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number, assault and batter with a dangerous weapon, and armed assault with intent to murder for the Jan. 8 incident.

L.A. pot shops plan to go to the ballot box to get city permits
Aiming to impose a sweeping set of statewide regulations on the marijuana industry, California passed a law last year to license shops that provide medical cannabis. But starting in two years, marijuana shops won't be able to get those state licenses unless they also have permission from local government -- and in Los Angeles, that could leave them in the lurch.

Los Angeles County reports record 45.5 million visitors for 2015
For the fifth year in a row, Los Angeles reported a record number of tourists for 2015, thanks in part to the continued growth of the number of big-spending international visitors. Mayor Eric Garcetti announced at a news conference at Los Angeles International Airport that Los Angeles County had welcomed a projected 45.5 million visitors last year, an increase of 2.8% from the previous year.

Anthony Rendon formally chosen as next California Assembly speaker
California Assembly members formally selected Anthony Rendon on Monday as speaker, vaulting the Lakewood Democrat to a position he could potentially hold for almost a decade. “When the voters extended term limits in 2012, they did so because they believed they would help the Legislature be more thoughtful, more productive and more deliberative,” said Rendon, who could hold his seat until 2024 under new term-limit rules. He said his role would be to help members “develop greater expertise and pursue longer-term policy strategies.”

Police: woman who died from exposure to storms was offered help
Los Angeles police say a 70-year-old homeless woman who refused services died of exposure during last week's fierce El Niño-driven storms, which dumped several inches of rain across the region. Officer Norma Eisenman said Sunday the woman was found soaked and unresponsive under a tarp on a downtown sidewalk Friday.
