D.A. Lacey under pressure after Beck recommends criminal charges against officer in fatal shooting
In the months leading up to her bid for reelection, Los Angeles County Dist. Atty. Jackie Lacey — like prosecutors across the country — has faced pressure to file charges in several high-profile police shootings and use-of-force cases. This week, an unlikely and influential person joined the push: Los Angeles police Chief Charlie Beck.

Motorcyclist Killed in Hit-and-Run Collision in Reseda
A motorcyclist was struck and killed Monday night by a hit-and-run driver in Reseda, police said. It happened around 8:45 p.m. in the intersection of Reseda Boulevard and Ingomar Street, according to Detective Bill Bustos with the Los Angeles Police Department. When officers arrived, they found a male motorcyclist lying in the roadway, Bustos said.

Family Distraught Victim Treated in Same Hospital as Alleged Gunman
The family of a man who was shot in December by a suspected gunman in a month-long shooting spree across SoCal was distraught upon learning their loved one was being treated in the same hospital as the alleged gunman. Bheri Werntz, a father and grandfather of three children, was critically injured after he was shot outside of his home in Burbank.

L.A. County supervisors approve formation of oversight commission for Sheriff's Department
After hearing comment from dozens of activists in opposition, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors decided Tuesday that retired law enforcement officials may be eligible to sit on a commission that will oversee the Sheriff's Department. The board approved an ordinance on the formation and responsibility of the nine-member Civilian Oversight Commission.

Pasadena Hires Consultant to Study Possible Police Oversight Models for PPD
After much controversy surrounding the police shooting of Kendrec McDade, city officials have hired a consultant group to study possible police oversight models for the Pasadena Police Department. Slated to begin in mid-January, Kathryn Olson, head consultant of Change Integration, along with her associate Barbara Attard, will conduct a study of the police department and put together a report with different oversight models the city should consider.

Community Rallies Behind Transient Whose Testimony Helped Convict Man In Riverside Officer's Murder
The community has rallied behind a man whose testimony helped convict a man in the 2010 slaying of a police officer in Riverside. Steve McQueen was the sole witness to the murder of Riverside police officer and Iraq war veteran Ryan Bonaminio. Bonaminio was shot and killed while chasing Earl Ellis Green, a suspect of a hit-and-run.

Armed group calls meeting to talk with Oregon community
The armed activists occupying a national wildlife refuge in southeastern Oregon said Tuesday that they plan to hold a community meeting this week to explain themselves and inform residents when they will leave. A member of the anti-government group told reporters that the meeting will be held Friday evening in Burns, 30 miles from the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, The Oregonian newspaper reported.

L.A. politicians will explore a possible tax or bond measure to help the homeless
To raise money for a sweeping new plan to combat homelessness in Los Angeles, city lawmakers are asking their top analysts to outline the steps needed to put a tax or bond measure on the ballot. L.A. needs more than $1.85 billion during the next decade to fund the strategies suggested in a report released last week by city budget analysts.

Mayor appoints Wendy Greuel to head Homeless Services Authority
Mayor Eric Garcetti announced today that he has appointed former Los Angeles city Controller Wendy Greuel, his opponent in the 2013 mayoral race, to the board overseeing the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority. The joint city and county agency operates programs and services for homeless individuals around the county and decides how to distribute federal funding for homelessness programs.

Rams return to la in 2016, Inglewood stadium proposal approved
NFL owners have approved a proposed Inglewood stadium, opening the door for the St. Louis Rams to return to Los Angeles for the first time since 1994. Owners voted 30-2 in favor of the Inglewood stadium project over a joint bid between the Oakland Raiders and San Diego Chargers to build a $1.7 billion stadium in Carson.

San Diego City Council Votes To Appeal Pension Reform Ruling
The City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to appeal a recent state Public Employment Relations Board order for the city of San Diego to rescind a voter-approved pension reform measure and once again offer pensions to city employees. The Dec. 30 ruling called on the city to overturn Proposition B, passed by an overwhelming margin in 2012. The ballot measure shifted new non- police employees from the debt-ridden pension system to a 401(k)-style plan, and was a major part of efforts by city leaders to restructure municipal finances.
