Suspected Gunman Remains at Large in Winnetka Double Slaying
A suspected killer remained at large Monday, accused in the shooting deaths of his ex-girlfriend and another man at a Winnetka apartment. A fit of rage was how neighbors described what LAPD investigators said appears to be a domestic dispute that left the man and a woman dead Sunday afternoon. "As I walked into the kitchen I heard screaming in hallway,” said neighbor Lisa Lyons.

Man Shot and Killed While Sitting in Car in Boyle Heights
Police were investigating the death of a man who was fatally shot while sitting in his car Monday afternoon in Boyle Heights. The shooting occurred around 4 p.m. on Second Street between Cummings and St. Louis streets, according to Officer Mike Lopez with the Los Angeles Police Department. The victim, described as a Hispanic man in his mid-30s, was inside his car when the assailant either walked up or drove up and shot him, Lopez said.

Woman injured in shooting at Baldwin Hills Crenshaw mall food court
A woman was wounded in the leg during a shooting at the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw mall food court on Monday, Los Angeles police said. The shooting was reported around 2:35 p.m. at the mall, located at the corner of Crenshaw and Martin Luther Ling Jr. boulevards. LAPD says the female victim was shot in the left leg, but she was conscious and breathing.

LAPD Fatally Shoots Armed Burglary Suspect in Hollywood Hills Area: Officials
Los Angeles police shot and killed a burglary suspect armed with a gun Saturday afternoon in a residential neighborhood of Hollywood Hills West, authorities said. No officers were injured in the confrontation, which took place about 3:30 p.m in the 1800 block of Courtney Terrace, LAPD officials said. The deceased suspect, described by police as a male transient, was not immediately identified.

Knife-wielding man in North Hills shot, killed by police
A knife-wielding man was shot and killed by police in North Hills Sunday. Officers responded about 5:50 p.m. to the 8800 block of Norwich Avenue on a report of a suspect, armed with a knife, in the middle of the street, according to Lt. Kirk Kelley of the Los Angeles Police Department's West Valley Station, whose officers responded to the call even though it was in the Mission Station's patrol area. They were confronted by the suspect and an officer-involved shooting occurred, Kelley said.

Barricaded Suspect Surrenders After 7-Hour Standoff in Northridge
Los Angeles police SWAT officers fired tear gas into a house in Northridge last night, flushing out seven people in whom they had no interest, and only early today did they detain the suspect they were seeking -- a man wanted for an alleged parole violation, police said. “Seven people, plus the suspect, were eventually taken out of the house” Thursday, Lt. Dan Thompson of the Los Angeles Police Department's Devonshire Station said in an interview this morning.

LA City Council To Consider Offering $50K Reward For Suspect Wanted In Deadly DTLA Hotel Shooting
The Los Angeles City Council Tuesday will consider offering a reward for information about a gunman who is wanted for killing a 21-year-old man and injuring three others outside of a hotel in downtown Los Angeles. According to Councilman Jose Huizar, “detectives are continuing to investigate this crime and believe a [$50,000] reward may compel members of the public to provide information on the identity of the person responsible for this crime.”

Gov. Brown denies parole for San Diego police officer's killer
Gov. Jerry Brown again has denied parole to a former gang member who was convicted of fatally shooting a San Diego police officer in 1978. This is the second year in a row that Brown has reversed a state board's decision to recommend Jesus Salvador Cecena, 54, for parole. Cecena was 17 when he was convicted of first-degree murder for shooting Officer Archie Buggs, 30, four times during a traffic stop in the Skyline neighborhood.

Garcetti: Site of Porter Ranch gas leak ‘like a crime scene'
Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti compared the site of a massive natural gas leak near Porter Ranch to a crime scene Monday and said Southern California Gas Co. must be held accountable for all long-term effects to area residents. The leak, which Gas Co. officials say was detected at the Aliso Canyon Storage Facility on Oct. 23, has sickened many nearby residents, forced thousands from their homes and prompted the relocation of students at two schools.

L.A. eyes plan to hire lobbyist to explore ways to use city-owned land
The Los Angeles City Council voted Wednesday to explore whether L.A. should retain a private company to come up with ideas for developing city property — and suggested using a process that would avoid competitive bidding for the work. Two days later, after The Times asked about the reason for avoiding a bid process, City Councilman Curren Price asked the council to amend his proposal. He said he wanted to head off any perception that he was dictating which company the city should use.

Backers to hold off on pension ballot measures this year
Proponents of a pair of initiatives to curb retirement benefits for public employees said Monday they will not go forward with their ballot measures this year. Instead, former San Diego Councilman Carl DeMaio and former San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed said they will seek to qualify their measures in 2018, when they believe they'll face a more favorable political landscape. "We need pension reform to protect our education system and vital public services from these fast-growing burdens," DeMaio, a Republican, and Reed, a Democrat, wrote in an email to supporters.

Life along concrete river hits bump for Los Angeles homeless as encampments torn down
The red tape stretched across the road leading to the concrete riverbed. Juan Mendez ducked under the tape, which warned: "Danger Hazardous Material Do Not Enter." Then he watched Los Angeles sanitation workers take apart the dwelling on the banks of the Arroyo Seco that for four years he had called home. Early Wednesday morning, the part-time screen printer with a felony conviction watched workers in hard hats and white hazmat uniforms study a plywood box for any health hazards: human waste, razors, hypodermic needles.
