The union representing the rank-and-file in the Los Angeles Police Department unleashed a barely concealed attack on police Chief Charlie Beck today, linking his policies to a surge in crime. "The Los Angeles Police Protective League will formally request that the Los Angeles City Council's Public Safety Committee immediately hold public hearings to determine the effectiveness of Chief Beck's current crime reducing efforts and what he proposes to do to reduce the dramatic rise in crime,'' a statement said, announcing a late-morning news conference by two of the union's directors.

1st day of LASD jail brutality case ends after 5 jurors step forward with undisclosed information
It's either just a wrinkle in the federal prosecutor's jail brutality case against two deputies from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department or it's spiraling into a mistrial. On Wednesday - the first full day of testimony - the witnesses, the defendants and the jury all were sent home early in the trial of Joey Aguiar and Mariano Ramirez. Aguiar and Ramirez are accused of conspiring to beat Brett Phillips, an inmate, then falsifying reports and, with others at the jail, engaging in a cover-up, prosecutors allege.

Public Library to (Temporarily) Waive Late Fees
You know all of those blogs and sites and self-help guides you consulted at the start of the year, the ones that advised you to get your closets in order, your shelves tidied, and your whole life decluttered? You followed them to the letter but then ... that one library book. The overdue one, the novel that's sat under a pile of magazines on the coffee table for too many weeks. Or months. The book you're sure to owe a bundle on, the day you take it back to your local LA Public Library branch. You know you really should, and it is absolutely the right thing to do, but, oh golly, how ever much will you owe?!

Health groups launch California ballot initiative to raise taxes on tobacco, including e-cigarettes
Months after California's Legislature failed to act, a coalition of health experts and the state's schools chief on Wednesday launched a petition drive to qualify an initiative for the November ballot that would raise the cigarette tax by $2 per pack. The measure would reduce smoking and raise money to expand treatment services for Medi-Cal patients, support anti-smoking campaigns and boost medical research, said Tom Steyer, co-chairman of the Save Lives Coalition.
