Councilman Mitch Englander Calls for Action on LA Crime
Los Angeles City Councilmember Mitch Englander is expected to file a motion today asking the LAPD to report to the City Council's Public Safety Committee following last year's rise in crime. Councilmember Englander will also ask the Los Angeles Police Protective League to help the City Council find ways to stop the increase in crime.

Police Protective League Says Too Few Cops on Street
The head of the union that represents LA police officers says there are too few officers on the streets. Police Protective League Craig Lally says the lack of cops is endangering public safety. He says too many officers are doing desk jobs because the department stopped hiring civilians to do those jobs. “We can put anywhere from two to four to five hundred hundred officers back on the street just looking at where they're positioned and start hiring civilians. We got to start with that – put these officers back on the street.”

Man accused in Winnetka double homicide charged with capital murder
A 24-year-old man was charged today with capital murder for allegedly killing his former girlfriend and a man in her Winnetka area home. Brian Anthony Gonzales, also known as Brian Hammons, is expected to be arraigned Friday in Van Nuys on two counts of murder. He is accused in the Sunday killings of Emily Fox, 22, of Winnetka, and Jerrad Scott, 24, of La Mesa.

Investigation Underway After Man Found With Gunshot Wound in Westlake
An investigation was underway after a man was found with a gunshot wound in Westlake Wednesday. Police received a shots fired call in the 500 block of North Benton Way at about 8:32 p.m., said Officer Tony Im with the Los Angeles Police Department. The wounded man was believed to be in his 30's, Im said.

Investigators need help finding murder suspect
Detectives with the Los Angeles Police Department's Northeast Division are seeking help in identifying a suspect responsible for the murder of 19-year-old victim on Jan. 17. At approximately 12:12 p.m., patrol officers responded to a call about a suspicious death in the 4700 block of North Figueroa Street. They discovered the victim, Kaelyn Michael Tarin, inside a tent suffering from a gunshot wound. Paramedics responded and pronounced Tarin dead at scene.

Officers Save Man Who Tried to Hang Himself from Hollywood Street Pole
A man who tried to commit suicide by hanging himself from a telephone pole was rescued by two officers from the Los Angeles Police Department's Hollywood Station, authorities said today. Officers spotted the man about 5:30 p.m. Sunday near the top of a telephone pole on the corner of La Brea and Delongpre avenues. He had tied a torn shirt around his neck and was threatening to hang himself, according to the LAPD.

Former Football Players Charged With Robberies Plead Not Guilty
Two former college football players have been charged with a series of robberies in Los Angeles and Ventura counties. Former USC tight end Bryce Dixon and former Louisiana State University defensive lineman Trey Lealaimatafao, both 19, pleaded not guilty Thursday afternoon to five counts each of second-degree robbery and one count each of carjacking, attempted carjacking and assault with a deadly weapon.

Ad Campaign Depicting Little Boy With Gun Aims To Raise Awareness Of New Gun Storage Law
“Never let your gun get in the wrong hands.” That's the message of a new ad campaign that depicts a little boy pointing a gun. The photo and its powerful caption were displayed on a few city buses in Los Angeles Thursday, but will soon be on hundreds. The ad campaign is funded by the U.S. Department of Justice in partnership with the city.

Deputy Injured While Subduing Knife-Wielding Man
A deputy was seriously injured in Canyon Country Thursday while subduing a knife-wielding man who barricaded himself inside a bedroom along with his two young children, sheriff's officials said. The early-morning call came from a woman who alleged she was assaulted by her husband at their home in the 26700 block of Isabella Parkway, according to officials at the sheriff's Santa Clarita Valley Station. The woman reported her husband was emotionally disturbed and was barricaded along with the couple's children, ages 3 and 5, and that he used a dresser to block the bedroom door.

Alaska Airlines Captain Accused Of Piloting Plane While Under The Influence
A former airline pilot accused of flying a plane while under the influence has been arrested on federal charges, authorities said. David Hans Arntson, a 60-year-old former pilot for Alaska Airlines and resident of Newport Beach, was arrested Wednesday morning and arraigned on a federal charge in Los Angeles. A news release issued by the U.S. Attorney's Office said Arntson was released on a $25,000 bond and ordered to return to court Feb. 10.

TSA Intercepted Record 2,653 Guns Found in Carry-On Bags Last Year
The Transportation Security Administration intercepted a record 2,653 guns in carry-on luggage during 2015. And more than 82% of those weapons were loaded. The guns were found at security checkpoints in 236 airports around the country. The five airports with the most confiscated guns were: 1. Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport: 153 2. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport: 144 3. Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport: 100 4. Denver International Airport: 90 5. Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport: 73

Federal investigators focus on small campaign donations to L.A. Councilwoman Nury Martinez
Federal investigators looking into Los Angeles City Councilwoman Nury Martinez's 2015 reelection bid have turned their attention to contributors who gave some of the smallest donations of her campaign. Campaign-finance probes at City Hall have historically centered on large contributions, the kind that illegally exceed spending limits. But this time around, federal investigators have been focusing on donations listed in Martinez's contribution filings of just $5 and $10.

Gas company forced to resume offering rental houses to Porter Ranch families
The Los Angeles city attorney has forced the Southern California Gas Co. to back down from a plan the utility quietly put in place this week to stop offering rental houses to Porter Ranch families dislocated by the nearby gas leak. The company instructed its relocation specialists on Tuesday to no longer place residents in rental houses because they are increasingly hard to find and expensive for short-term lease.

Los Angeles Rams collect 45,000 season ticket deposits in 2 days
The Rams have collected over 45,000 season ticket deposits in just two days for their upcoming return next season to Los Angeles, officials announced Wednesday night. Although the L.A. Coliseum located in Exposition Park has a seat capacity for 93,000, the Rams say the refundable $100 deposit does not guarantee seat availability. Officials say 5,000 deposits were placed within the first five minutes, 8,000 within the first 45 minutes and 45,000 deposits were made within 48 hours.
