Inaugural ‘Run to Remember — Los Angeles' attracts 4,500 runners
Scott Lankford of Simi Valley was the men's winner of the inaugural “Run to Remember — Los Angeles” half-marathon while Stephanie Mundt of Scottsdale, Arizona was the women's winner. Approximately 4,500 runners registered the half-marathon and 10K races beginning at The Grove honoring fallen law enforcement officers, firefighters and other first responders, organizers said. The run Sunday was inspired by Boston's “Run to Remember,” which began in 2005.

Councilman Mitchell Englander seeks more data on Los Angeles crime spike
Amid a rise in violent crime across Los Angeles, City Councilman Mitchell Englander has called for police to analyze crime patterns and explain the uptick. Englander, who chairs the council's Public Safety Committee, said Friday he wants the Los Angeles Police Department to report on the crime numbers and appear before a City Hall committee. Crime rates have spiked in the last two years, with a 20.2 percent increase in violent crimes and a 10.7 percent increase in property crimes over 2014 numbers, according to Englander's office.

Two Killed, Two Wounded in South LA Shooting
Two people were killed and two wounded in a shooting outside a liquor store in the Florence neighborhood of South Los Angeles Saturday night. The shooting was reported just after 8 p.m. at 81st Street and Avalon Boulevard, according to LAPD's 77th Street Division. Aerial footage from NewsChopper4 showed the shooting was outside of Three Star Liquor Market. A man and woman were both killed. Investigators said an AK-47 assault rifle is believed to be the weapon used in the attack.

Body found in container in Crenshaw District may be missing man
Homicide detectives were investigating the scene where a decomposed body was found inside a container in the Crenshaw District on Saturday. Los Angeles police said an apartment building manager found the container inside a unit in the 4100 block of Santo Tomas Drive around 1:50 p.m. Family members said the man who rented the apartment is 52-year-old Terry Benjamin and believe he is the victim. The same family members reported Benjamin mission on January 4.

Westwood crime rate increases 22 pct. in 2015, first spike since 2003
Criminal activity in Westwood increased by 22 percent in 2015, the first increase in crime rates since 2003, police officials said. Thefts and robberies account for most of the increase, said Chris Ragsdale, the Los Angeles Police Department's lead officer for Westwood, at last week's Westwood Neighborhood Council meeting. The Westwood Neighborhood Council meets monthly to discuss issues relevant to Westwood and surrounding areas.

Wave of violence shakes Boyle Heights church community
Assumption Catholic Church in Boyle Heights has long been a place of peace and salvation in its tight-knit community. But the hit-and-run death of a beloved nun and other random violence has left parishioners on edge and questioning how best to safeguard their sanctuary. The modest brick structure is recognizable to many as the church that sits across the street from one of L.A.'s landmark eateries, Manuel's Original El Tepeyac Cafe.

Man fatally shot at Jesse Brewer Park identified
The coroner's office Sunday identified the man who was fatally shot at Jesse Brewer Park near USC. The victim was Allen Luther Thomas, 47, of Los Angeles. A suspected gunman taken into custody following the shooting, which took place about 4:15 p.m. Tuesday at the park, at Exposition Boulevard and Vermont Avenue, said Los Angeles Police Department Sgt. Carlton Brown, watch commander at the Southwest Division.

Owner of motel allegedly used for drug deals should be forced to live there, suit says
The owner of a Los Angeles motel allegedly used for drug dealing and prostitution should be forced to live there until the illegal activity stops, according to a lawsuit filed by the city attorney's office. The narcotics abatement action targets the Grand Motel in the Pico/Robertson neighborhood. The 19-unit motel at 1479 S. La Cienega Blvd. has been "a magnet for criminal activity" and the site of hundreds of arrests since 1997, states the lawsuit, which was filed this week in Los Angeles County Superior Court.

$50K Reward Offered for Information on 3 'Dangerous' Inmates Who Escaped O.C. Jail
A reward of up to $50,000 has been offered for information leading to the recapture of three "dangerous" inmates who escaped from a jail in Orange County, California, authorities said Sunday. Hossein Nayeri, 37, Jonathan Tieu, 20, and Bac Duong, 43, were discovered missing from the Orange County Central Men's Jail in Santa Ana around 9 p.m. Friday, according to the the Orange County Sheriff's Department.

California Cops Frustrated With 'Catch-And-Release' Crime-Fighting
An experiment has been underway in California since November 2014, when voters approved Proposition 47: put fewer lawbreakers in jail without increasing crime. The measure converted a list of nonviolent felonies into misdemeanors, which translated into little or no jail time for crimes such as low-value theft and possession of hard drugs. Police didn't like Prop 47 when it was on the ballot, and now many are convinced they were right to oppose it.

FBI ran website sharing thousands of child porn images
For nearly two weeks last year, the FBI operated what it described as one of the Internet's largest child pornography websites, allowing users to download thousands of illicit images and videos from a government site in the Washington suburbs. The operation — whose details remain largely secret — was at least the third time in recent years that FBI agents took control of a child pornography site but left it online in an attempt to catch users who officials said would otherwise remain hidden behind an encrypted and anonymous computer network.

Harris-Dawson is an African American community activist who represents the 8th Council District, spanning from Baldwin Hills, with one of the highest concentration of black wealth in the United States, to the edge of Watts.

L.A. councilman calls for ballot measure to revamp how DWP is governed
Los Angeles City Councilman Felipe Fuentes called Friday for a ballot measure to overhaul the way the Department of Water and Power is governed, proposing changes that he argued would empower its board and minimize interference by city politicians. His proposal comes in the aftermath of a report, prepared by outside consultants, that found that power at the utility is too decentralized and urged the city to put reforms before voters. Critics have repeatedly charged that the way the department is governed is dysfunctional and vulnerable to political meddling.

Pension initiative refiling may include legislation
A bipartisan group announced the end last week of an attempt to put a public pension reform initiative on the ballot this fall, aiming instead for the November 2018 ballot. Its refiled initiative also may be put into a bill in the Legislature. A bill that would cut the growing costs of state and local government pensions by reducing retirement benefits for new hires presumably would be dead on arrival. Cuts in retirement benefits are opposed by powerful unions and their Democratic allies, unless agreed to in bargaining.
