Tarantino Pledges 10 Percent of Net Profits From Prism Movie to Support U.S. Law Enforcement
Tony Tarantino and Tarantino Productions announced that 10 percent of the net profits from his upcoming movie “Prism” would go to support police officers across the United States. The funds are intended to positively impact the lives of those within the law enforcement community and the residents they serve. This pledge will span the three-year life of the distribution contract and monies will be paid out as they come in. The 10 percent pledge covers domestic and international markets as well as the sale of DVDs, Blu-ray, Netflix and other media distribution outlets.

LAPD's Valley bureau takes a new tack to solve more homicides
Los Angeles police homicide detective Johneen Jones had been making some headway on a high-profile murder in Studio City but found herself juggling a myriad of other duties. Television producer Jill Blackstone was arrested in March on suspicion of murdering her deaf and partly blind sister Wendy Blackstone but released after prosecutors sent the case back to detectives. Since Jones left the North Hollywood police station last month to join the newly consolidated Operations-Valley Bureau Homicide division in Van Nuys, she's had more time to devote to the case, she said.

3 dead in South LA after 2 gang shootings, LAPD says
Officials are releasing more details in a South Los Angeles shooting that left two people dead, and a second shooting police believed may have been in retaliation. The first set of deadly bullets rang out near 81st Street and Avalon Boulevard at about 8:15 p.m. on Saturday. The shooting killed 20-year-old Shujaa Silver of Los Angeles and 16-year-old Cy'jai Bell, while injuring two others. Police said a vehicle pulled up, a passenger got out with an assault rifle and shot multiple times at a crowd as people tried to flee.

'He Was Amazing': Loved Ones Remember Local Former Star Football Player, Victim of LA Double Homicide
Jerrod Cardae graduated from Monte Vista High School in 2009. He was a high school football star with his whole life ahead of him. Saturday night Cardae's family and friends met at the high school to remember the promising athlete gone too soon. Cardae and another woman were killed in an LA-area double homicide on January 17th. On Tuesday, Los Angeles Police arrested the woman's ex-boyfriend Brian Anthony Gonzalez in connection with the shooting.

LA's Most Wanted: 2014 murder of Ray Rice in South Los Angeles
A $50,000 reward is being offered for the arrest and conviction of Ray Rice's murderer. At about 2 a.m. on Friday, February 7, 2014, Rice was walking near his home on Budlong Avenue near 53rd Street in South Los Angeles. A man on a motorized bicycle shot Rice and rode away. Motorized bicycles are not very common in this neighborhood so detectives believe this could be a piece a very important piece of information. However the weather that morning could have helped Rice's killer. It was very cold during those early morning hours so the shooter was wearing a scarf and other cold weather clothing that might have obscured his facial features and body profile.

Who killed Harbor City auto body shop owner? Security footage released
Homicide detectives Monday released video footage in hopes of identifying the suspect who killed a Harbor City auto body shop owner. On Sept. 3 about 7:10 p.m., police responded to an assault call in the 1700 block of W. 259th Street and found the victim lying in a driveway, suffering from a gunshot wound. Ricardo Macias-Mendoza, who owned Guero's Body Shop and Paint in the 25900 block of S. Western Avenue, was shot near the business and died at a hospital, according to investigators from the Los Angeles Police Department's Harbor Division.

Robbers hit jewelry store, take $135,000 in goods, at the Village at Westfield Topanga
Police are investigating a robbery at a jewelry store at the The Village at Westfield Topanga. The robbery occurred at 4:25 p.m. Friday at Manya Jewelers. Owner Harut Nazarian said robbers came in and broke the glass cases and emptied shelves of merchandise worth $135,000. One robber had a gun, he said. The Village opened in September as an open air plaza located along Topanga Canyon Boulevard, between Westfield Topanga and the Westfield Promenade.

CHP officer injured in northbound 170 Freeway crash; 4 lanes closed for hours
A California Highway Patrol officer on a motorcycle was injured in a collision Monday morning on the northbound 170 Freeway, prompting a four-lane closure near Burbank Boulevard. The extent of the officer's injuries was not immediately known, CHP Officer Tony Polizzi said. Live TV footage showed wreckage from the crash strewn across freeway lanes as the officer was loaded onto an ambulance. According to the CHP traffic incident log, the CHP officer and a Mini Cooper collided about 8:07 a.m. on the freeway.

O.C. Jail Escape: ‘You Just Don't Know What They Are Going to Do'
With three dangerous jail escapees still on the run, the anxiety in parts of Southern California is palpable. "I'm scared because these people are dangerous, and they may grab you or try to take your car," said a woman in the city of Westminster who would only identify herself as Carmen. "You just don't know what they are going to do." About 10 miles east, Santa Ana gas station employee Mike Murched waits nervously for news about the fugitives, who escaped just 3 miles from his store. He's heard customers talk about their fears since the inmates broke out Friday.

Bomb in San Bernardino attack was poorly built
A homemade bomb left behind by the husband and wife who perpetrated a mass shooting at a California social services center failed to detonate because it was poorly constructed, two law enforcement officials told The Associated Press. The failure compelled Syed Rizwan Farook, 28, and Tashfeen Malik, 29, to drive around the area of San Bernardino, California, after the shootings that killed 14 people. They were apparently trying to set off the remote-controlled bomb, one of the officials said.

Things to know about police shootings and mental illness
The killing of a mentally ill man in his south Louisiana home during a struggle with sheriff's deputies last month appears to fit a troubling, tragic pattern. Michael Noel, 32, struggled for years to get treatment for his paranoid schizophrenia. The deputies who confronted Noel last month were carrying out a protective custody order so he could be involuntarily hospitalized. Experts see evidence suggesting the problem of deadly confrontations between law enforcement officers and people with mental illness has worsened as governments dismantle networks of health care services.

This South L.A. corner is no place for ex-inmates to reenter society, critics say
The South Los Angeles intersection of Vernon and Western avenues is anchored by a liquor store and a boarded-up mini-mall. Murders have roiled the area over the last year — including a recent drive-by shooting before noon. Neighbors complain that prostitutes and drug dealers linger nearby. After a contentious hearing this month, a Los Angeles City Council committee voted against the Vernon Avenue proposal, sending it to the entire council for a final decision. A report by council staff said the facility "does not promote a strong and compatible commercial sector," was not compatible with community plans and would worsen neighborhood blight.

Los Angeles Proposes Olympic Athlete, Media Village Sites for 2024
Organizers of the Los Angeles bid to host the 2024 Olympics have chosen the UCLA campus as the prospective site for the athletes' village. Mayor Eric Garcetti also announced Monday that the University of Southern California campus would be the site of the media village. The facilities of the UCLA campus would allow athletes to train where they are living. Los Angeles organizers had initially proposed building an athletes' village on a rail yard east of downtown but questions arose about the feasibility of that idea, which would have required moving the yard elsewhere and cleanup.

Almost 7,500 volunteers are signed up to help count L.A. County's homeless
As city and county officials gear up for what is promised as a $100-million program to reduce homelessness, thousands of volunteers will hit the streets to document the scale of the problem. Nearly 7,500 volunteers have signed up to take part in the 2016 homeless count, said Naomi Goldman, spokeswoman for the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority, which organized the event. The volunteers will gather at 150 deployment centers across the county over three nights beginning Tuesday night in the San Gabriel Valley and East Los Angeles.
