San Pedro wants ‘No Excuses' from downtown L.A. in a new push to fight crime
Local social media pages have exploded in recent months with posts and videos highlighting what seems to be a rise in thefts, homeless encampments and blight in the Harbor Area. If there's a tipping point, San Pedro seems to have reached it. And the problem, according to many: Not enough police. On Saturday, a “No Excuses” rally is planned to demonstrate support for Los Angeles Police Department's Harbor Division — but also to demand that more officers be assigned to the area and that a new jail, which never opened due to budget constraints, be put into service.

Man Shot at Gas Station in Critical Condition
A man was in critical condition early Wednesday morning after he was shot at a gas station, police said. The shooting was reported around 12:15 a.m. in the 1900 block of S. Hoover Street, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. Officers arrived and found a man in his 20s suffering from a single gunshot wound. The victim was transported to a hospital where he was in critical condition, according to the LAPD. Police said the suspected gunmen fled from the area in an unknown direction.

Quentin Tarantino's dad Tony pledges 10% of his indie film's profits to police departments across U.S.
This is guaranteed to cause some pulp friction at Quentin Tarantino's next family reunion. Tarantino's dad plans to give 10% of the profits of his upcoming indie film “Prism” to law enforcement agencies across the country — three months after his son called police murderers. The money collected will be sent to the Los Angeles Police Protective League, which will then dole out the funds to law enforcement agencies in different municipalities.

Why LA Police Union Blames LAPD Chief Beck for Surge in Violent Crime
The union officials stated that there are “dangerously low police patrol staffing levels that are endangering the lives of residents, visitors, business and police officers in Los Angeles”. This they believe has played a major role in the increase in both violent crime (murders) increased gang violence and property related crimes. The union has called on Los Angeles city councilman Mitch Englander, who chairs the City's Public Safety Committee, to call for a public hearing and for Chief Beck to address the above noted concerns. Englander stated that on Friday he would make a formal motion before all council members.

LAPD Arrests 8 People During Protest Against Deportation
Los Angeles police said they arrested eight people Tuesday morning after protesters blocked downtown streets and refused to leave one intersection as part of a demonstration calling for immigration reform. The eight people were lying in the intersection of Temple and Los Angeles streets when they were taken into custody, LAPD Capt. Andy Neiman said. The demonstrators had used "sleeping dragon" devices -- plastic tubes -- to link their arms and delay police, Neiman said.
KTLA 5 Crowd Gathers on Sixth Street Bridge Ahead of Closure
Hundreds of people gathered on the iconic Sixth Street Bridge Tuesday night, prompting police to move in to try and disperse the crowd. The bridge is slated for demolition during the first week of February because of a structural flaw, and is scheduled to close Wednesday. "My family has shot a lot of stuff on this bridge and I felt I should be a part of this scene tonight," Darby Walker, a Silver Lake resident, said. Social media was credited with getting the word out on the massive turnout.

Police seek information on suspect in fatal shooting at the Standard hotel
Officials are offering a $50,000 reward for information on the whereabouts of a man suspected of opening fire at the Standard hotel last month, wounding three people and killing a 21-year-old man. Police say the suspect in the killing is 32-year-old Jamaine Harrington. On Dec. 13 about 2:30 a.m., two groups of men got into a fight in front of the Standard Hotel in the 500 block of South Flower Street in which two people were shot, police said. Police said that Harrington ran around to the back of the hotel, where he exchanged gunfire with another man, who was shot in the leg.

LAPD trains for counter-terrorism in Granada Hills
The Los Angeles Police Department's Counter Terrorism Special Operations Bureau brought into play a variety of methods for dealing with a terrorist incident on Tuesday. The training exercises at the Edward M. Davis Training Facility in Granada Hills centered on a homemade bomb inside a vehicle. Team members used skills involving surveillance, pursuit, snipers secured to a helicopter, the bomb squad and a gun fight, said Capt. Andy Neiman. “We do it as much as we can,” he said of the training. “It's a critical component of maintaining out readiness.”

Oregon Occupation Leader Ammon Bundy Arrested; Group Spokesman LaVoy Finicum Killed
The weeks-long armed occupation of a federal wildlife refuge in Oregon suffered two major blows when protest leader Ammon Bundy was arrested and another key figure was killed. Bundy and several fellow occupiers were pulled over Tuesday on Highway 395, a law enforcement official said. According to The Oregonian, they were headed to the city of John Day, where they planned to participate in a community meeting set up by local residents.

Smokeless tobacco at Dodger Stadium? You're out of here!
Tired of watching baseball players spit tobacco all over the dirt or pristine grass (or their uniforms) at Dodger Stadium? Well, apparently so is the Los Angeles City Council. The council voted Tuesday morning to approve an ordinance banning the use of smokeless tobacco products at all baseball fields and other sports venues in the city. The L.A. council vote, in sports vernacular, was a blowout: The motion won 14-0. In a statement, the council said the ordinance was passed “both to set the right example for America's youth and for the health of the players.”

Celebrity-Only Lounge at LAX? L.A. Council Says A-O.K.
The Los Angeles City Council on Tuesday backed a 10-year lease with a security firm that plans to create a private lounge at Los Angeles International Airport for celebrities, high-profile figures and others who want to avoid the paparazzi. The lounge will also be available to any LAX passenger who is willing to pay a hefty per-use fee, expected to be around $1,800. The council voted 10-0 to concur with the Airport Commission's approval last November of the lease with Studio City-based private security firm Gavin de Becker & Associates.

L.A. is working to count a hidden population — homeless young people
When Marlon Sibrian turned 18 and aged out of the Los Angeles County foster care system, he had nowhere to go. His social worker dropped him off at the door of a Boyle Heights youth shelter. Sibrian's time there made it easy for him to recognize the homeless young men amid similarly hoodie-clad and beanie-topped individuals at Union Station. "Hey, bro," Sibrian, 21, said, slapping a young man's hand.
