LAPD chief promises to reopen Harbor Division jail in 36 months
Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck vowed that San Pedro's jail would reopen “within” three years and that more officers would be brought to Harbor Division, prompting applause from the estimated 450 residents who gathered for a crime forum this week. The jail at Harbor Division is one of five citywide that is shuttered due to a shortage of civilian employees, whose ranks shrank dramatically during the recession and were never replenished. Lasting almost three hours, Thursday night's much-anticipated crime forum sponsored by Los Angeles City Councilman Joe Buscaino began with the bad news: Crime is up citywide for the first time in more than a decade.

2 Dead, Including Pregnant Woman, When Driver Fleeing Gunman Crashes Vehicle Into Boyle Heights Home
Two people were killed, including a pregnant woman, after a driver fleeing a gunman careened into the front porch of a Boyle Heights home in what firefighters described as an "incredible, violent" crash on Sunday. The incident began when a gunman stepped out of a black SUV and shot into a white car near East Cesar E. Chavez Avenue and Echandia Street, Los Angeles Police Department Sgt. Frank Preciado said. The car then sped away from the scene at a high rate of speed and crashed into a home in the 1500 block of Pleasant Avenue -- about five blocks away, Google Maps showed.

16-Year-Old Dead After Officer-Involved Shooting in Boyle Heights
A 16-year-old boy was killed after officers opened fire in Boyle Heights Saturday night, authorities confirmed. Jose Mendez was identified by the Los Angeles County Coroner Sunday as the teen killed in the police confrontation. Officers with the LAPD's Hollenbeck Division were following a stolen vehicle on 6th Street just west of Lorena Street around 10:45 p.m., Los Angeles Police Department Sgt. Frank Preciado said. Shortly after officers began to follow the vehicle, Sgt. Preciado said the car stopped in the 3300 block of 6th Street.

Victim Pistol-Whipped In Hollywood Hills Home Invasion; 2 Sought
Los Angeles police are on the hunt for two suspects accused of robbery in a violent home invasion at a mansion in Hollywood Hills. Investigators said two men armed with semi-automatic weapons stormed the home in the 2600 block of Astral Drive at about 3:15 a.m. on Saturday. The alleged robbers beat one person inside the home with the butt of a gun. Another victim sprained an ankle while trying to run away, according to the LAPD. Police said the suspects took off with large quantities of marijuana believed to have been grown inside the home.

DUI Suspect Arrested After Crashing Into Marc Jacobs Store In WeHo
An alleged drunk driver was arrested for impaired driving after he crashed through the front glass door of the iconic Marc Jacobs store in West Hollywood early Sunday. Los Angeles police officers responded to the call at about 2 a.m. at the location in the 8400 block of Melrose Place. Officials from the LAPD West Traffic Division said the Chevy Camaro jumped the curb, struck a light pole and then slammed into the front of the store. Police confirmed witness accounts of the suspect seen running from the scene with a bottle in his hand.

Suspect At Large Following Deadly LA Quadruple Shooting
Los Angeles County Sheriff's detectives are continuing to investigate a quadruple shooting that happened in an unincorporated area of Los Angeles Saturday night. Detectives learned that Century Station deputies responded to an "assault with a deadly weapon" call, and upon their arrival, they discovered that an unknown suspect had shot three men and a juvenile girl. One Hispanic male victim was found lying on the sidewalk with multiple gunshot wounds to the torso. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

FBI combs Los Angeles area for Washington state murder suspect
A 29-year-old man wanted in connection with a murder in Washington state is believed to be in the Los Angeles area and should be considered armed and dangerous, the FBI reported. Robert Deshawn Grott, who may have stayed in a downtown hotel on Tuesday, is wanted on an arrest warrant alleging murder, according to the FBI, whose Fugitive Task Force is leading the local search for him. Grott is also wanted on a federal arrest warrant alleging unlawful flight to avoid prosecution, officials said. “Grott is one of two subjects that (the) Tacoma Police Department believes were involved in the Feb. 1, 2016, homicide in the Tacoma area,” according to a statement from the FBI's Seattle field office.

California issued 605,000 new driver's licenses for immigrants in the U.S. illegally last year
Judith Benitez had gone most of her adult life without knowing how to drive. The 35-year-old woman from Mexico who is in the U.S. illegally would ask family members for rides to pick up her children from school. Trips to the grocery store or the doctor's office were complicated. That changed last year when Assembly Bill 60 was implemented, granting people in the country illegally the right to obtain driver's licenses in California. Benitez, who lives in Lemon Grove, learned to drive and was among those in line at the Department of Motor Vehicles the day the law took effect.

#101SlowJam ends four hours ahead of schedule
Good news for Super Bowl fans: The #101SlowJam officially came to an end at 10 a.m. Sunday, about four hours ahead of schedule, a city official said. Demolition work on the 6th Street Bridge that spanned the 101 Freeway in downtown was completed faster than planned, allowing for the early reopening of a 2.5-mile section of the freeway. Mayor Eric Garcetti applauded the efforts of work crews, adding "that was one fast Slow Jam." The ahead-of-schedule demolition "is a testament to what can be accomplished when we get into the groove, pull together and plan ahead," Garcetti said in a statement.

City Atty. Mike Feuer, turf rebate recipient, steers clear of DWP records lawsuit
The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power has spent months fighting to keep certain information about its turf removal rebate program from being released, arguing in court that customers' names and addresses should remain confidential. If the utility ultimately prevails, one of the beneficiaries of its legal battle could be City Atty. Mike Feuer, who received a lawn removal rebate from the DWP in 2014. Feuer's legal team has been advising the five-member DWP board on its public records lawsuit, which was filed to prevent the names and addresses of thousands of rebate recipients in Los Angeles from being released to the San Diego-Union Tribune, a sister publication of the Los Angeles Times.

Campaign records found among Ex-L.A. City Councilman Tom LaBonge's office documents
Dozens of boxes of office documents that former City Councilman Tom LaBongeand his staffers sought to destroy included old lists of election donors. LaBonge, in an interview Friday, said he had “absolutely not” worked on his campaign at his City Hall office. L.A. city officials and employees are prohibited from campaigning, fundraising or doing campaign research during their work hours, or in city offices not available to the public for campaign activities. LaBonge said he did not have time Friday to review an electronic copy of the documents from his office because of a family matter.

What It'll Take To Get LA Memorial Coliseum Ready For Rams
From two Olympic Games to the first Super Bowl fifty years ago, the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum has a rich and storied history. Now, the stadium may have to get prepared for a blast from the past as the Rams, who played here until 1981, prepare to take the field again. In fact, the Rams will call the Coliseum home for three seasons until the Inglewood project is ready. “The NFL has walked this grass. They're happy with it. We should be just fine with this turf,” said Joe Furin, the coliseum's general manager.
