Police seek suspect in deadly attack in North Hills
Police on Wednesday said they're looking for a suspect who viciously cut one man to death in North Hills and left another man hospitalized. The deadly attack was reported to police at 10:40 p.m. on Monday on the 8700 block of Parthenia Place. Police from the LAPD's Mission Division arrived to find two victims on the ground. One man, described as a 38-year-old Latino from North Hills, had numerous lacerations on his body, and appeared to be unconscious and not breathing. The other victim, described only as a male, had head injuries and also was unconscious but was breathing. Police did not offer any other details.

LA Brothels Fronted by Massage Parlors, Lawsuit Alleges
Los Angeles City Attorney Mike Feuer announced Wednesday the filing of a lawsuit against the operators of an alleged ring of brothels fronted by massage parlors in Eagle Rock, Wilmington and North Hollywood. The nuisance abatement lawsuit targets Helen Haihong Huang and Mark Richard Vitatern, who operate MHWI Int'l Inc., and others believed to be associated with a ring made up of at least four businesses. Two parlors are in Eagle Rock, one at 6630 N. Figueroa St and another at 5740 York Blvd., near the We Tell Stories art school and the Highland Park Foursquare Church, according to the city attorney.

$25K Reward Offered After Baby Girl Shot, Killed in Her Compton Home
A $25,000 reward was offered Wednesday for information leading to the arrest of the two men responsible for the shooting death of a baby girl Tuesday night in her family's Compton home. "I stand here before you, deeply saddened. Last night in our community, an unspeakable tragedy occurred that no parent of any family should ever have to endure," Mayor Aja Brown said at a news conference Wednesday. "My heart goes out to the family of 1-year-old Autumn Johnson." The search for the attackers was still ongoing. "Please have compassion for Autumn Johnson's family and help us bring the suspect to justice," Brown said.

Ex-L.A. County Sheriff Lee Baca pleads guilty in jail scandal
Retired Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca pleaded guilty Wednesday to lying to federal investigators, a stunning reversal for the longtime law enforcement leader who for years insisted he played no role in the misconduct that tarnished his agency. Baca's plea in a downtown courtroom capped a string of prosecutions that began with low-ranking officials and worked up the chain of command. His former No. 2, Paul Tanaka, is scheduled to stand trial in March on charges that he obstructed a federal investigation into brutality and corruption by sheriff's deputies in the county jails.

Armed parolee barricaded in Canyon Country shed is found dead
An armed parolee who barricaded himself inside a shed in Canyon Country was found dead this morning from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, the sheriff's department reported. The suspect had a parole violation warrant that was outstanding, said Deputy Trina Schrader. A sheriff's SWAT team was called to the scene and crisis negotiators tried to get him to surrender peacefully but failed, Schrader said. His name was not immediately released, pending family notification. About 2:30 a.m., the SWAT deputies entered the shed and discovered the body, Schrader said. It was the second such outcome of a sheriff's department case in hours. Earlier, a disturbed man who barricaded himself inside his La Mirada home, threatening suicide, also shot himself to death.

Colo. deputy shot by teen dies after being taken off life support
Mesa County Sheriff's Deputy Derek Geer has died after being taken off life support, ABC 7 reported. The suspect, 17-year-old Austin Patrick Holzer, shot the deputy earlier this week. The department announced Geer's passing Thursday morning. "It is with tremendous sadness that I announce the passing of Deputy Derek Geer. Deputy Geer has been removed from life-support after completing a last selfless act of organ donation," Sheriff Lewis said in a statement. Geer was shot after responding to a call about a man carrying a gun and wearing a bandana over his face. Geer deployed his TASER when the suspect opened fire then took off on foot.

Justice Dept. Enters Ferguson Court Case In Strong Position
The Justice Department enters its court fight against the city of Ferguson with the apparent upper hand, given a months-long investigation that found vast problems in the way police and courts treat poor people and minorities in the St. Louis suburb. In suing the city, which took a high-stakes gamble by rejecting a settlement with the federal government, the department will look to prove in court the same constitutional violations it's already alleged on paper: Baseless stops and searches of black drivers, excessive use of force by officers and a profit-driven court system reliant on fines for petty violations.

Panel Denies Parole To Sirhan, Assassin Of Robert F. Kennedy
Sirhan Sirhan was denied parole for fatally shooting Robert F. Kennedy after a confidante of the slain senator who was shot in the head forgave him and repeatedly apologized for not doing more to win his release. Paul Schrade's voice cracked with emotion during an hour of testimony Wednesday on his efforts to untangle mysteries about the events of June 5, 1968. The 91-year-old former labor leader said he believed Sirhan shot him but that a second unidentified shooter felled Kennedy.

Street Closures, Traffic Delays Expected During Pres. Obama's Visit To LA
President Barack Obama will visit Southern California Thursday to attend a pair of Democratic National Committee fundraisers. Obama will travel from San Jose to Los Angeles later today. According to the White House, the president will attend a Hancock Park reception hosted by entertainment lawyer Aaron Rosenberg and his husband, “Cougar Town” producer Danny Rose. Police have advised the public to expect heavy traffic and multiple street closures in the greater Los Angeles area during Obama's visit.

Two nonprofits face more than $47,000 in fines over L.A. lobbying forms
Two nonprofits could face fines totaling more than $47,000 from the city Ethics Commission for failing to accurately report how much they had spent on lobbying at City Hall. Ethics Commission staffers have proposed a fine of $30,000 for the Los Angeles Alliance for a New Economy, an influential organization that has successfully pushed to raise wages for hotel and airport workers, and $17,500 for the Hospital Assn. of Southern California, a regional trade group for hospitals.

L.A. will pay a white parks worker nearly $3.8 million in a racial bias lawsuit
Five years after a white city parks worker accused a former supervisor of disparaging his skin color, the Los Angeles City Council on Wednesday approved a multimillion-dollar payout to satisfy a court judgment in the racial discrimination lawsuit. The council voted unanimously Wednesday to pay former gardener James Duffy nearly $3.8 million plus accrued interest in a court judgment that found Duffy suffered years of harassment and retaliation while working for the Department of Recreation and Parks. Duffy couldn't be reached for comment. His attorney, Carney Shegerian, said Duffy, now retired, is eager to put the case behind him.
