Mental competency cases are surging in L.A. County and supervisors want to know why
Following a Times report on the sharp, unexplained rise in mental competency cases in Los Angeles Superior Court over the past five years, county supervisors are calling for an analysis of the causes behind the increase. Mental competency cases heard in mental health court to determine whether defendants are fit to stand trial more than tripled from 2010 to 2015, growing from 944 to 3,528. From 2014 to 2015, the caseload jumped by nearly 50%. The court does not compile or analyze detailed data on the types of criminal cases that end up in the mental health court. Court officials, attorneys and mental health professionals told The Times they could only guess at the reasons behind the increase.

L.A. County D.A.'s corruption case against three Irwindale officials is dismissed
Prosecutors portrayed the corruption case as city officials partying on the public dime. Irwindale employees and council members treated themselves to steak dinners and Yankees tickets during lavish trips to New York that included pricey Broadway shows and a hockey game. The details sparked outrage in the small San Gabriel Valley community. But last week, the corruption case brought by the Los Angeles County district attorney's office against three Irwindale officials collapsed when prosecutors announced they could no longer proceed.

Building-Limit Allies Visit Koreatown
Koreatown community leaders gave Jill Stewart, campaign director for the Neighborhood Integrity Initiative, a tour of the site where a Beverly Hills developer is seeking to build a 27-story luxury housing project. It abuts low-rise apartments on streets that cannot handle the traffic of a mega-project. “This project is the poster-child for our Neighborhood Integrity Initiative,” Ms. Stewart told six TV and radio reporters at an impromptu news conference after the tour. “This project should have died long ago at the hands of sensible planning. Instead it continues to live and pose a threat to Koreatown's character, its traffic and its environment. When our ballot measure is approved by voters, projects like this will be stopped in their tracks.”

State senator promotes $2B homeless plan funded by tax on millionaires
Admitting that a fragmented government system is responsible for rising homelessness across Los Angeles, city and county leaders joined state officials at a townhall meeting in Pacoima Thursday to discuss housing strategies they say will cost billions, but will help more people. State Senate President Pro Tem Kevin de Leon addressed a crowd of about 100 community leaders and service providers to garner support for his proposed $2 billion bond that will go directly to housing homeless people who have mental health needs. Called “No Place Like Home,” the proposed measure would be paid for through Proposition 63, passed in 2004. The measure imposes a 1 percent tax on those with a personal income of more than $1 million to fund mental health services.

Planned Inglewood stadium is in the running for the Super Bowl in 2020 or 2021
The NFL has a 2020 vision regarding Los Angeles. The yet-to-be-built football stadium in Inglewood is in the running to host the Super Bowl in 2020 or 2021 — and the decision will be made in May. With Houston and Minneapolis hosting the next two Super Bowls, the NFL's Super Bowl Advisory Committee has decided to have the following three games voted on in succession in one day during the spring meetings in May. The league's 32 owners vote on awarding the game. In doing so, the committee will make a departure from its "guiding principle" that a new stadium must have two full seasons under its belt before becoming eligible to host a Super Bowl. The Rams' stadium in Inglewood is slated to open in 2019, and it will be eligible for a Super Bowl at the end of that season.
