D.C.-area officer shot, killed; 2 suspects held in 'unprovoked attack'
Police in suburban Washington, D.C., have taken two suspects into custody after an officer was shot dead outside a district station on Sunday. Officials in Prince George's County, Md., tweeted late Sunday: "One of your defenders lost his life in defense of this community today." Police Chief Henry P. Stawinski III said the shooting was "an unprovoked attack." Authorities said another person, who is not a police officer, also was wounded. A witness, Lascelles Grant, toldThe Washington Post that she heard what she thought was firecrackers or gunshots. When she looked outside she saw a man dressed in black firing a handgun. "He fired one shot, and then he started pacing back and forth, then fired another shot," she said. The officer, 28-year-old Jacai Colson, was a four-year veteran of the department. He was just days shy of his 29th birthday.

Police Commissioners Call For Changes To LAPD's Guidelines On Use Of Deadly Force
Two members of the Los Angeles Police Commission are calling for an overhaul of the LAPD's guidelines on the use of deadly force, according to a report released Friday. Police Commission President Matthew Johnson and Commissioner Robert Saltzman put forth 12 recommendations that call on officers to do everything possible to diffuse confrontations before resorting to deadly force. Director of the Los Angeles Police Protective League Lou Turriaga said he had concerns about the recommendations, which he said could put officers' lives at risk. “Clearly this is not a collaborative process by the Police Commission,” he said. “We are very concerned that the recommendations as written may jeopardize officer and community safety. We're afraid that this policy does not take into account the split-second, life-and-death decisions police officers must make in the field.”

Ambush-Style Murder In South Los Angeles Has LAPD Searching For Two Killers
The 911 call the evening of Aug. 27, 2015 is chilling to hear. A man in his 20s, with a gunshot wound himself, is heard crying for his brother who would later not survive. "Bro!" the dispatcher can hear him cry. "Bro! My brother's been shot!" and then a long, loud scream: "Noooooooo!" That caller is Wendal Jamar. And he felt those same feelings just 10 years before when he was present for the murder of his twin brother. That case remains unsolved. But for his big brother, 38-year-old Davion Washington, his murder happened when Washington was trying to rescue Jamar from the streets of South LA.

Buzz-Worthy: Firefighters, Officers Shave Heads at Cancer Charity Event
Some buzz-worthy news: Firefighters, officers and volunteers all said farewell to their hair all in the name of childhood cancer research in North Hollywood Saturday. "Every year we get a little bit more money, and this year it looks like we're going to make about $100,000," Lt. Greg Doyle, LAPD volunteer, said. The St. Baldrick's Foundation event was to spread awareness as well as raise money to help find a cure at Los Angeles Fire Station 89. Men and women cringed as stylists took buzzers to their heads and shaved away. One woman's long salt-and-pepper braid was hacked off, and her head shaved as she smiled.

Highland Park Crash Leads to Search for Driver of Stolen Car
Police were searching for the driver of a stolen car in a Highland Park neighborhood Friday after the driver crashed into as many as four other vehicles and took off, authorities said. Police said they were following a stolen car at 7:22 p.m. at Avenue 64 and Repton Street after spotting a known gang member, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. The driver was believed to have realized he was being trailed, and blew through a stop sign. The stolen black Honda smashed into a white sedan, leaving the occupants in critical condition. Another car was struck in the intersection, and that driver was also left in critical condition. A total of three people were hospitalized in the violent wreck.

L.A. County coroner's office workloads could threaten accreditation, sources say
The embattled Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner met all accreditation standards at the time of its last annual review in August, but showed some signs of potential problems because of a staffing shortage, according to the president of the National Assn. of Medical Examiners. The department was short two medical examiners at the time of its last review, said David Fowler, president of the association, in an interview Saturday. If the department lost more staff or caseloads increased substantially, he said, workloads could threaten its accreditation. The Medical Examiner's office, which handles more than 8,500 cases a year, has been under scrutiny for substantial backlogs in processing cases. Currently, there are about 180 bodies in the county morgue waiting for processing, and toxicology tests can take more than six months to complete.

Nude Selfies ‘Traded Like Baseball Cards' By Child Predators, LA County Sheriff Warns
Nude selfies are viewed and traded like baseball cards among child molesters, predators, and extortionists, the Los Angeles County sheriff warned in an open letter Sunday. Addressing the nearly 700-word letter to parents, Jim McDonnell specifically charged that nude selfies are forever present on the Internet. “All too often,” he wrote, “these images end up on the Internet or in the hands of child predators, some of whom actually make contact with these children with specific intent of luring them into a relationship.” In other instances, he said, the children are extorted for additional pictures or video and even money. “These cases slice across all socio-economic and racial lines,” he cautioned.

Police Pursuit of Stolen Cruiser Across Los Angeles Ends in Fatal Shooting
The high-speed pursuit of a stolen police cruiser came to a dramatic end in a Southern California alley Sunday after officers rammed the patrol unit and then opened fire, authorities confirmed. The driver was killed in the shooting, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department confirmed. Authorities began pursuing the stolen police cruiser in the West Covina area Sunday at 9:45 p.m. The driver hit speeds in excess of 100 mph, as well as drove on the wrong side of the road, weaving on and off freeways. The pursuit came to a dramatic end at Jackson and Colorado Streets in Glendale as the driver pulled into an alley. Officers rammed the car in an attempt to get the driver wedged up against a trash bin.

Wrong-way crash kills deputy, driver
A horrific head-on crash early Saturday morning on the elevated portion of the Selmon Expressway killed a 30-year-old Hillsborough County sheriff's deputy and a driver heading the wrong way on the highway Killed in the wreck that left both vehicles mangled and strewn across the pavement was sheriff's Deputy John Robert Kotfila Jr., a six-year veteran of the department who was a traffic-crash investigator for the patrol division in District 4, which covers the south portion of the county. Kotfila comes from a long line of law enforcement officers, said his father, John Robert Kotfila Sr., from his home in Falmouth, Massachusetts, on Saturday afternoon.

Officer in good condition after gunfire near Philly
Authorities say an officer shot in an exchange of gunfire that killed a suspect in a city near Philadelphia is listed in good condition at a hospital. Chester's police chief says officers tried to stop a vehicle at about 4 p.m. Saturday but someone in the car started shooting and police returned fire. Chief James Nolan said two people in the car were shot. One died and the other's condition wasn't immediately available. A third person in the car was arrested. At one point, a scuffle broke out among a crowd of onlookers and police used pepper spray. The officer was taken to Crozer Chester Medical Center, where he was initially listed in critical condition but was listed in good condition Sunday. Chester is about 18 miles southwest of Philadelphia.

But Mayor Eric Garcetti Saturday unveiled a new mobile app that allows smart-phone users to search nearly 50,000 employment listings in the city of Los Angeles, and nearly 150,000 countywide. “Finding a great job in the 21st Century means searching whenever you want, wherever you are,” Garcetti said at the Northeast Valley Worksource Center, where representatives from new companies such as Uber, Lyft, Instacart and AirBnB spoke to job seekers. “The new JobsLA app puts that power in your hands.”

Garcetti Encourages Residents Near Shuttered Exide Plant To Get Properties Tested For Lead Contamination
A handful of elected officials on Saturday encouraged Boyle Heights residents living near the now-closed Exide battery plant to to sign up to have their properties tested for lead contamination. Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, Supervisor Hilda Solis, U.S. Rep. Xavier Becerra and other officials took part in the neighborhood walk and resource fair. The County Department of Public Health also offered free on-site blood testing. Residents who were unable to make today's events can access services — including blood testing — at a drop-in center at the Benjamin Franklin Library at 2200 E. First Street. The center will be open from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on March 19, April 2 and April 9.

District Attorney, Ridley-Thomas draw no opponents as filing period ends
District Attorney Jackie Lacey and Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas did not draw any opponents as the deadline to file to run for most offices in Los Angeles County in the June primary election passed Friday. Eight candidates filed to run for the Fifth District seat on the Board of Supervisors and three for the Fourth District seat, according to the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk. The incumbents in both those districts are barred from seeking re-election because of term limits. Los Angeles City Councilman Mitchell Englander filed Friday to run for the Fifth District seat held by Mike Antonovich since 1980. The field also includes Kathryn Barger, Antonovich's chief deputy, who has received his endorsement, state Sen. Bob Huff, R-San Dimas, and Glendale Mayor Ara Najarian. Deputy District Attorney Elan Carr, who unsuccessfully sought the 33rd Congressional District seat in 2014, Altadena Town Council Member Billy Malone, Darrell Park, who describes himself as a educator/budget specialist and real estate investor Rajpal Kahlon also completed the filing process.

Art Inspires Creative Expression Among Homeless On Skid Row
An inspiring art program is allowing the homeless on Skid Row in Downtown Los Angeles to channel their inner creativity to produce masterpieces. On the second Thursday of each month, volunteers with the Midnight Mission gather in the Theodore J. Haddad Activity Center and encourage participants to express themselves artistically. Artists with varying skills participate in the free "Art with a Mission" program. They range from the more advanced craftsmen using charcoal and graphite on canvases, to beginners drawing with crayons in coloring books. No matter the artistic talent, laughs are shared as the community is brought together by simple brush strokes. It's a day many with the Midnight Mission look forward to every month with much anticipation.

Barbershop Family Offers Free Haircuts for Homeless in LA
Heber Garcia is a master barber — helping people look their best runs in the family. With his brother Eddie, they run CaliCuts, a chain of barbershops in Fontana, Upland, San Dimas and Hollywood. But getting there wasn't easy. "We struggled," Heber said. "My mom came from Mexico and my dad as well. They started selling tamales." While selling tamales, the family learned how to cut hair and eventually turned it into a thriving business. "It was really rough," Eddie said. "I don't know how my mom did it. But she saved up her money, and we got a house out of just doing hair. We saw that was a good opportunity."
