Woman kidnapped, shot and dropped off near LA hospital
A woman in her 20s was shot in the leg and dropped near LAC+USC Medical Center Monday morning after being kidnapped from a bus stop in Downey, according to the LAPD. Police say around the young woman was found near the intersection of Cummings St. and Chicago St, behind the hospital, after being shot in the leg. The victim was kidnapped nine-miles away near the intersection of Orange St. and Paramount Blvd in the City of Downey Sunday night, according to police. The victim told police she was waiting at a bus stop when three to four men pulled into a brown van or truck, held a gun to her stomach and drove her around for several hours before shooting her.

Family, friends struggle to make sense of fatal 7-Eleven stabbing in Valley Village
Family, friends and authorities were struggling Sunday to understand a “senseless crime” that left the general manager of a 7-Eleven store dead Friday and his co-worker girlfriend critically wounded following an apparent shoplifting incident. Washi Uddin Ahmed, 55, of North Hollywood was stabbed outside the convenience store in the 5300 block of Laurel Canyon Boulevard by a man suspected of stealing a hot dog and a bottle of beer about 9:15 a.m. He was pronounced dead shortly afterward at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, according to police and coroner's officials.

LAPD Officers, Witness Drag Man From Burning Car in Metro Bus Crash
Two Los Angeles Police Department officers and a witness jumped into action Monday, pulling a man from a burning sedan after a chain-reaction crash ignited a Metro bus in the Vermont Square area of South Los Angeles Monday afternoon. As many as seven people were injured, and four vehicles were involved in the wreck, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. The crash occurred when the Metro bus was making a left turn from Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard to Western Avenue. Metro said a car hit another car, which then hit the bus. The sedan went up in flames, which spread to the bus.

Authorities to Investigate Street Racing Claims After Cars Strike Metro Bus in South L.A.
Authorities on Tuesday were expected to investigate claims by witnesses that street racing led to a fiery crash the day before in South Los Angeles that involved at least two cars and a Metro bus. "Officer, I need to talk to you. These guys were racing. They almost crashed into me way back there," one witness could be heard saying in a cellphone video immediately following the crash on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Western Avenue in the Vermont Square neighborhood. A black Mercedes-Benz was racing a white Dodge Challenger before both ran into a Metropolitan Transit Authority bus, witnesses told authorities.

Inmate Captured After Escaping From LA Re-Entry Facility
State prison officials say an inmate who walked away from a Los Angeles County re-entry facility where he was finishing out his sentence is back in custody. The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said Monday that Donta Baker was captured in Compton March 25, more than a week after his escape. The 22-year-old was taken to the California Institution for Men in Chino. Baker was serving a four-year sentence for grand theft.

Officers Track Carjacking Pursuit Suspect Using Phone App
The woman accused of stealing a truck and going on wild pursuit before trying to jump in the cab of a police cruiser was identified Monday as the carjacking victim revealed how officers tracked her truck: using a phone app. The alleged carjacker was identified as 31-year-old Khaianna Reynolds by the Los Angeles Police Department. She was arrested on suspicion of carjacking, and attempted grand theft auto. The carjacking victim, Christy Adair, said on Sunday, she had just returned to her home in Sherman Oaks and was taking something into the house when she heard her Toyota Tacoma start up.

LAPD seeking missing Valley man
The Los Angeles Police Department's West Valley Division asked for the public's help today to find a 59-year-old man with multiple health problems who went missing Monday. Bruce Geist, who suffers from Alzheimer's, schizophrenia, is bipolar and wears a colostomy bag was last seen about 3:45 p.m. in the 5700 block of Wish Avenue in Encino, according to the LAPD. Geist is white, stands 5 feet 11 inches tall and weighs about 180 pounds, according to the department. Geist also has blond hair and blue eyes.

Feds Arrest 185 In Los Angeles Area In Operation Targeting Transnational Gangs
A five-week federal enforcement action targeting criminal gang members and others associated with transnational criminal activity resulted in more than 1,100 arrests nationwide, including 185 in the greater Los Angeles area, officials said Monday. The operation, dubbed Project Shadowfire, was led by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement personnel, and was part of ICE's ongoing Operation Community Shield. “During the course of the operation, which ran from Feb. 15 to March 21, special agents in the Southland and across the country worked closely with other federal, state and local law enforcement agencies to locate known gang members and gang associates, including more than 900 individuals linked to transnational criminal activity, such as drug trafficking, human smuggling, sex trafficking, and racketeering,” according to an ICE statement.

Report finds flaws in L.A. County's system for defending children accused of crimes
Attorneys who defend many juveniles charged with serious crimes in Los Angeles County get fewer resources and less oversight than in other large California counties, according to a long-awaited report released Monday. Most youths charged with crimes in L.A. County are represented by deputy public defenders if their families can't afford to hire private defense attorneys. When there is a potential conflict of interest — for instance, if the public defender's office is already representing another defendant charged in the same case — private attorneys who contract with the county are appointed. Those lawyers, known as panel attorneys, are paid a flat rate of $340 to $360 per case.

Bay Area Coast Guard crew intercepts cocaine smuggling sub
A Bay Area Coast Guard crew busted a group of smugglers piloting a covert submarine loaded with 6 tons of cocaine through the open waters off the coast of Central America, officials said Monday. Four suspected transnational criminal drug runners were aboard the blow-laden submersible on March 3 about 300 miles southwest of Panama when the boat was spotted cruising just below the ocean surface. A U.S. Customs and Border Protection airplane spotted the vessel and scrambled two interceptor boats with the crew from Alameda, Lt. Donnie Brzuska said.

FBI uses mystery method to break into gunman's iPhone; withdraws legal action
The FBI says it successfully used a mysterious technique without Apple's help to break into an iPhone linked to the gunman in a California mass shooting. The surprise development effectively ends a pitched court battle between Apple and the Obama administration. The government told a federal court Monday without any details that it accessed data on gunman Syed Farook's iPhone and no longer requires Apple's assistance. Farook and his wife died in a gun battle with police after killing 14 people in San Bernardino, California, in December. Apple did not immediately comment on the development.

Man shot by police after drawing weapon at US Capitol
Capitol Police shot a man on Monday after he pulled a weapon at a U.S. Capitol checkpoint. The suspect was taken to a local hospital and a female bystander sustained non-life-threatening injuries. The U.S. Capitol was on lockdown for about an hour and the White House also was briefly locked down. As Washington teemed with spring tourists in town to view the cherry blossoms, staff members and visitors to the Capitol were rushed into offices and told to shelter in place. The suspect was known to officers, Capitol Chief of Police Matthew R. Verderosa told reporters. However, he would not confirm reports that it was the same man who disrupted the House chamber last fall by shouting.

California proposal for state-run retirement plan for private-sector workers moves forward
California has taken a step closer to becoming the first state to make retirement savings accounts a near-universal benefit for workers with a plan that lawmakers hope will help ease an expected massive shortfall in retirement savings. A state board Monday sent a set of recommendations to the Legislature calling for the creation of the California Secure Choice Retirement Plan — essentially a 401(k) plan operated by the state and open to private-sector workers whose employers don't offer a retirement savings plan.

What could change if recreational pot is legalized in California
Right now it's not hard to buy pot legally in California: $40 and a trip to the doctor, and you have yourself a prescription for medical marijuana, which you can use to treat things like back pain and anxiety. But a campaign is underway to make pot legal for recreational use. Supporters are gathering signatures now to put an initiative on the November ballot, asking California voters if pot should be fully legal, like it is in Colorado, Oregon and Washington.

Some developers may be forced to build LA affordable housing
Backers of an initiative mandating that more affordable housing and local jobs be included in new large-scale developments in Los Angeles began a signature-collection drive Saturday aimed at qualifying for the November ballot. Organizers of the Build Better LA Coalition launched their campaign in downtown Los Angeles, speaking to hundreds of potential voters. They need 64,000 signatures to qualify for the November 8 ballot. The Build Better LA initiative would place new requirements on any development project that requires a change in zoning rules.

City Council To Consider Payment Plan To Repair LA Sidewalks
Los Angeles City Council members will consider a motion Tuesday that calls for a payment plan for the reparis of residential and commercial sidewalks. Under the proposal, city officials would cover the cost of the first sidewalk repair. Property owners would then be held responsible to pay for future fixes. Under state law, property owners are technically responsible for the condition of sidewalks. However, 40 years ago, the city decided to take over the repairs of sidewalks that were damaged by tree roots. Once federal funding dried up, the city was left with a growing backlog of repairs that were not affordable.
