Profiteering masquerades as medical care for injured California workers
Prosecutors are beginning to turn the tide, pursuing charges against more than 80 medical professionals who've handled more than 100,000 injured-worker cases, most of them originating in Southern California. A review of thousands of criminal court records by Reveal from The Center for Investigative Reporting shows a system in which pay-to-play schemes trump patient care, particularly in unregulated treatments rejected by insurers and disputed in obscure courts throughout the state.

California lawmakers OK highest statewide minimum wage
California lawmakers on Thursday approved the nation's highest statewide minimum wage of $15 an hour to take effect by 2022 after it was hailed by Democrats as an example to the nation as it struggles with a growing gap between rich and poor. The legislation now goes to Gov. Jerry Brown, who says he will sign it into law Monday after previously working out the plan with labor unions. Meanwhile, in New York, Gov. Andrew Cuomo reached a tentative deal with top legislators late Thursday to also raise his state's minimum wage to $15 an hour. If the tentative pact holds together, New York would become the second state to pay its workers that much.

With the Sierra snowpack still below average, Mayor Eric Garcetti Thursday urged Angelenos to continue saving water. “In the last year, millions of Angelenos have stepped up and conserved a tremendous amount of water, ” he said. “We can slip backwards. People can start taking longer showers, start watering more often, not get those fixtures replaced that you were going to. My message is keep the momentum going.”

L.A. County asks cities to help pay for programs to combat homelessness
Los Angeles County officials are studying how to come up with as much as $500 million a year they say is needed to help address the region's spiraling homelessness crisis. They're hoping that some of it will come from the county's 88 independent cities, even if it's only in increments of $500 a month for each homeless person or family in need of a temporary housing subsidy.
