Two wounded in South Los Angeles gang-related shooting
Two men were wounded in a gang-related shooting in South Los Angeles, police said Saturday. The two men were standing in front of a location in the 1000 block of West 39th Street at about 4:30 p.m. Friday when they were approached by some suspects who fired several shots, said Officer Mike Lopez of the LAPD's Media Relations Section. One victim was shot in the upper body and the other was shot in the leg, Lopez said. They were rushed to an area hospital and their conditions were not immediately known.

Man, Woman Hospitalized After Being Shot In South LA
Police Monday searched for a gunman who opened fire on a man and woman in South Los Angeles. According to the Los Angeles Police Department, the shooting unfolded around 4 a.m. in the 6100 block of South Broadway. Upon their arrival, paramedics transported a man and woman to a hospital for treatment of gunshot injuries. An update on their conditions was not immediately available. At this time, a suspect description has not been provided. The investigation is ongoing.

Elderly Man Beaten Downtown Allegedly By Mentally Ill Homeless Man
Authorities said a mentally ill homeless man beat an elderly man in downtown LA Saturday afternoon. The unidentified elderly man was taken to a hospital and is in critical condition, officials said. A security guard reportedly came to the elderly man's aid and had to use pepper spray on the homeless man to stop the attack. The victim was attacked about 3:30 p.m. Saturday in the area of Grand and Olive streets, according to Sgt. J. Sterling, watch commander at the Los Angeles Police Department's Central Station.

LAPD Officer Helps Girl With Alopecia Get Her Wish: A Wig
When Officer Ramon Lomeli starts his shift, he never knows what that day will bring. But in his eight years with the Los Angeles Police Department, one day stands out to him for the better. It was the day he met 9-year-old Brianna, who has alopecia universalis, a medical condition that prevents her body from growing hair. “I have no hair, that's why they bully me,” said Brianna, who explains that kids at school make fun of her because of it. Lomeli first met Brianna around the holidays when she was selling candy, trying to raise funds for a wig.

Uber Passenger Sought in Attack, Carjacking of Her Driver
Police were searching Friday for an Uber passenger who attacked her driver before carjacking his car and hitting him with it. Saul Mejia, an Uber driver the woman attacked him Monday night in South Los Angeles. "She just put the pedal to the metal. I guess I just tumbled over the car." He suffered cuts and bruises he got when he says the woman carjacked his car, then rammed him with it before taking off. "At that moment I thought I was dead," he said. Mejia said the pick up in South Los Angeles Monday night started off normal enough. The woman asked to use his phone after whomever she was visiting wasn't home.

North Hills Father Charged With Killing Son For Being Gay
A 69-year-old man has been charged with one count of premeditated murder as a hate crime after prosecutors say he shot his son to death with a shotgun outside their North Hills home for being gay. Shehada Khalil Issa was arrested Tuesday after Los Angeles police officers found his son's body outside the home. Issa's wife, later identified as 68-year-old Rabihah Issa, was found stabbed to death inside the residence. The suspect told police he shot his son Amir in self-defense after he discovered his wife's body in their house. An investigation into Issa's wife's death is ongoing.

Could a regional law enforcement task force put a dent in deadly street racing?
For decades, authorities have struggled to halt a street racing craze that has plagued Los Angeles County, sometimes with fatal results. Attempted crackdowns were short-lived. Few officers focused exclusively on the problem. And law enforcement agencies often worked alone to deter would-be racers from venturing into their jurisdictions — a strategy that critics complain simply pushed the problem into neighboring cities. Now, some police officials are calling for a more coordinated effort to break the racing scene.

Tanaka Fights Back: 'I Thought Those Orders Were Lawful'
Paul Tanaka was once on track to become the next Sheriff of Los Angeles County. Now, he's a defendant with one last shot at convincing a federal jury that he's not a criminal. Tanaka took the witness stand Friday in the trial that will determine if he deserves to spend up to fifteen years in federal prison. The former second-in-command of the LASD, and current mayor of Gardena, has pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiracy and obstruction of justice.

A bite by a San Diego police dog could be a severe use of force, appeals court rules
A police dog that bit through a woman's lip as she slept in her office after hours could be viewed as a severe use of force, a federal appeals court ruled Friday, and that question and whether it was appropriate force should be considered by a jury. A U.S. district judge had found in favor of San Diego police in a 2013 ruling, but Friday's opinion by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals reverses that decision and sends the case back to the lower court — and potentially to trial.
