What's behind LA's rise in crime rates?
For the second year in a row, violent crime is up in Los Angeles. Through March, homicides rose 24 percent compared to the same period last year. Overall, violent crime – which includes homicides, robbery, aggravated assaults and rape – is up 13.4 percent, according to LAPD data. The latest trend breaks from more than a decade of falling crime rates in the region. Experts note that L.A. is still charting rates well below what they were in the 1980s. They urge a longer view of trends to understand the full context of what's happening in the city, where violent crime is affecting neighborhoods and communities differently.

Pacoima residents, police say rising crime comes amid broader gains
As Los Angeles confronts rising crime rates for the second year in a row, residents in the San Fernando Valley neighborhood of Pacoima are hoping that hard-fought-for gains against gang violence will prove decisive in the fight against crime. Just a few years ago, the San Fernando Valley was a bright spot, scoring in reducing its gang-related violence. Many pointed to the hard work of local community groups, law enforcement, concerned parents and faith groups. Residents saw it as a sign that the area - long plagued by gang-related crime - had turned a corner. But lately, Pacoima, like other places in L.A., has seen an uptick in violent crime. And that's caused some to ask where the community is headed next.

Paul Tanaka faced a punishing cross-examination Monday as he fights corruption charges that could send him to federal prison for up to 15 years. Virginia bus station gunman who killed trooper 'hated' cops
An ex-girlfriend of the gunman at a Virginia bus station said Friday he frequently expressed his hatred toward police and once nearly choked her to death after she broke up with him. James Brown III of Aurora, Illinois, was killed Thursday by two Virginia state troopers after authorities say he fatally shot Trooper Chad P. Dermyer at a Richmond Greyhound station. Brown, 34, who had a lengthy criminal record, previously said he would rather die fighting police than return to prison, the ex-girlfriend said. Brown had an extensive criminal record in his home state, including charges of attempted murder, unlawful possession of a firearm and body armor as a felon and threatening to kill someone by phone. He often pleaded guilty to lesser charges or a single charge after being charged with several crimes.

Gov. Brown signs bill setting highest statewide minimum wage in U.S.
Gov. Jerry Brown signed a bill into law Monday giving California the nation's highest statewide minimum wage of $15 an hour by 2022. That and a similar effort in New York mark the most ambitious moves yet to close the national divide between rich and poor. Experts say other states may follow, given Congress' reluctance to act despite entreaties from President Barack Obama. “This is about economic justice. It's about people. It's about creating a little, tiny amount of balance in a system that every day becomes more unbalanced,” Brown said before signing the bill at the Ronald Reagan State Building in downtown Los Angeles.
