LAPD SWAT officer stabbed with a knife during standoff, suspect fatally shot
A man who was shot by Los Angeles police officers after he cut a SWAT officer with a knife following a standoff Wednesday morning has died at a hospital, authorities said. The OIS took place after an hours-long standoff at a Sylmar residence, a police spokesman said. It all began about 7:10 p.m. Tuesday, when police responded to a residence in the 14700 block of Lakeside Street, near Glenoaks Boulevard, regarding a call about a mentally ill man, LAPD spokesman Officer Ricardo Hernandez said. "Officers encountered the man outside the location armed with a knife," Hernandez said. "At that point, officers used a Taser to try and subdue the suspect, but it did not stop him and the man ran back inside his residence and refused to come out."

Residents Say Hollywood Being Overran By Criminals And Prostitutes
Angry residents gathered in Hollywood on Wednesday as they said their neighborhood was being overrun with criminals and prostitutes. Problem areas like an abandoned complex on Lexington Avenue that vagrants have repeatedly broken through plywood to get into were brought to the attention of the Los Angeles Police Department. During the meeting, Officer Paul Jordan announced a security guard would begin manning the Lexington Avenue property Wednesday evening, and also stated the complex was set to be demolished later in April.

Los Angeles sheriff's deputies, residents can restore trust
While headlines over the last several years show that community trust in law enforcement is under stress, I believe the bigger issue is addressing how we arrived at this point.
All too often, special interest groups which criticize and demonize officers for having a “warrior mentality” or for being “trigger happy” are just bait for the groups looking to remain relevant. Additionally, all too often, entertainment, be it TV or film, provides a false narrative of what law enforcement does across the country. The real question is, how do we address community distrust? The answer is quite simple: community policing, but not as the term is commonly used.

Security Camera Catches 2 Armed Bandits Robbing San Pedro Convenience Store
Police need your help with their search for two robbers who police say held up a San Pedro convenience store with a shotgun. An exterior security camera captured the bandits running into the 7-Eleven at 1519 N. Gaffey St. around 2 a.m. March 27 and ordered the clerk to open two cash registers. One of the men stood by with a shotgun while the other jumped over the counter and emptied the cash drawers. The bandits also grabbed some items before running off.

Sketch Released Of Hammer-Wielding Attacker Wanted In East LA
Detectives released a composite sketch Thursday of a man who is wanted for assaulting to two people with a hammer. According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, On March 25, the suspect assaulted a 63-year-old Hispanic man in the 1400 block of South Bonnie Beach Place. “The suspect walked up to the elderly male and without any warning or provocation struck him with a hammer type weapon,” Deputy Juanita Navarro-Suarez said. “When the victim fell to the ground, the suspect kicked the victim. The suspect then fled southbound on Bonnie Beach Place and was out of view.”

Road Rage Attack in Van Nuys Caught on Camera
Shahnam Asbaghi was driving home from work at a local coffee shop Tuesday when he says he was followed by a limo driver on the 405 Freeway. "I exited Sherman Way East," he said. "He walks over to my driver's side, swings as hard as he can." The video captured on Asbaghi's cellphone as he sat in the driver's seat appears to show a limo driver grabbing what appears to be a tire iron before swinging it at the window. Asbaghi said the alleged incident happened after the driver rammed in to him. But police said the limo driver initially reported that Asbaghi pulled in front of him and slammed on the breaks, causing a minor crash.

Workers at Bel-Air mansion claim they were trafficked to U.S. via Middle East
Three women from the Philippines have filed a lawsuit against Ray Irani, the former chief executive of Occidental Petroleum Corp., and his wife Ghada, alleging the couple underpaid and overworked them at their Bel-Air mansion, and that two of the women were trafficked into the U.S. via Qatar and effectively confined at the couple's home. In a complaint filed Tuesday in Los Angeles Superior Court, the women claim that the work at the Iranis' eight-bedroom, 14-bathroom home — such as cleaning, preparing food and performing massages and manicures — was grueling, and some workdays lasted up to 16 hours.

Former No. 2 Los Angeles County sheriff guilty of corruption
The former second-in-command of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department was convicted Wednesday in a corruption probe that also brought down his boss and several underlings who tried to thwart a federal investigation into abuses in the nation's largest jail system. Ex-Undersheriff Paul Tanaka was found guilty by a federal jury of obstruction of justice and conspiracy to obstruct justice. Tanaka helped orchestrate efforts to hide an inmate when they discovered he was an FBI informant, prosecutors said. Underlings were ordered to intimidate an FBI agent in the case by threatening to have her arrested.

Driver Pleads Not Guilty in 5 Freeway Street Race Crash That Killed 3
A Whittier man accused in a street race that triggered a multi-vehicle pileup on the 5 Freeway in Commerce, killing three people, pleaded not guilty Wednesday to three counts of second-degree murder. Dealio Lockhart, 35, is also charged with four counts of reckless driving on a highway causing injury stemming from the crash that occurred just after midnight Feb. 27. Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Upinder Kalra refused the defense's request to lower Lockhart's $6.2 million bail.

Fentanyl Overdose Epidemic
Around the county, health officials are warning of a growing number of overdoses from the opiate Fentanyl. For some, the addiction to painkiller grew out of a medical problem. Bob from Los Angeles says he was spending more than $500 a day on his drug addiction. He was using opiates for back pain. Then, when that didn't do enough for him, he bought ''Fentanyl'', a more powerful opiate, and says it almost killed him. ''It was one of those situations where I thought about calling 911 and paramedics and losing my job, or waiting it out, it was very scary ''. Prescription abuse of Fentanyl is one thing, but there's a whole other chapter to this story which is much more chilling.

Inmate Firefighter Escapes From Cal Fire Corrections Camp In Camarillo
Authorities sought the public's helpThursday to locate a 37-year-old inmate firefighter who escaped from a facility in Camarillo. According to the California Department of Corrections, Bobby Gleason walked out from the Cal Fire corrections camp located in the 2800 block of Wright Road around 11:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Gleason is believed to have escaped from the facility by cutting a hole in the perimeter fence. Authorities described him as a Caucasian man who is bald with blue eyes, has a medium build and stands 5-foot-10 tall. Gleason also has tattoos around his neck, arms and hand.

Pot legalization study says California needs strict rules on growers, drivers
California will need extensive regulatory oversight for cultivation, distribution and sales for pot intended for both social and medical use if voters approve recreational use of marijuana this year, according to a leading public policy group. A 32-page report, released Wednesday evening by the Public Policy Institute of California, said the state will need to create “robust licensing and tracking systems” for all legal marijuana production and sales, similar to measures that have been enacted in Washington and Colorado. Both of those states, which legalized recreational marijuana use in 2012, implemented “seed-to-sales” technology to track supply from pot producers to retail dispensaries selling cannabis products to both recreational and medical users.

Hyde Park Fire Leaves 2 Dead; Elderly Man Injured Jumping From Roof
An early-morning fire at a Hyde Park home left two people dead and forced an 80-year-old man to jump from the roof of the residence, authorities said. The blaze erupted at a two-story home in the 4200 block of W. 62nd Street around 2:40 a.m., according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. The surviving victim was transported to a local hospital. Neighbors tell Eyewitness News that the two people who were killed were the injured man's 80-year-old wife and his 50-year-old son. It took 78 Los Angeles firefighters about 49 minutes to knock the fire down. The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.

Explosion, fire at DWP plant leaves 8,700 customers without power in Studio City
An estimated 8,700 customers in Studio City, Sherman Oaks and Valley Village were without power this morning after an unknown electrical problem triggered an alarm and an automatic shutoff to those areas. It was reported at 8:43 p.m. Wednesday at a substation at 4250 Coldwater Canyon Ave., according to Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Shawn Lenske. LADWP spokesperson Vonda Paige said it was not an explosion as first reported by the fire department Wednesday evening. “We don't know what happened yet,” Paige told City News Service late Wednesday. Some early confusion between the LADWP repair crew and firefighters at the scene delayed repair efforts by the utility.

Council to Vote on Permanently Banning Shops From Selling 'Puppy Mill' Pets
An ordinance that would permanently ban Los Angeles pet shops from buying animals from puppy mills or breeders is on its way to the Los Angeles City Council, city officials said Wednesday. The best part? Shops would only be allowed to continue to sell animals from shelters, the humane society, or nonprofits registered with the city's animal services department. The ordinance was originally put into effect in 2012, and was set to expire under a "sunset" clause on June 30 of this year.

Los Angeles launches campaign to promote benefits of smoke-free apartments
A three-year campaign to urge landlords to switch to smoke-free apartments kicked off Wednesday in Los Angeles, where results of a study show 82 percent of renters would support such policies in their buildings. Billboards and signs placed in bus shelters and other spots across the city of Los Angeles will feature an image of a little girl carrying a teddy bear and wearing an oxygen mask. Signs will include the message: “It's time for all L.A. to breathe easy.” The goal behind the $3 million campaign, funded by the federal Centers for Disease and Control and Prevention and formed by various organizations is to educate landlords, managers and tenants on the benefits of discouraging cigarette smoking inside building units, said Peggy Toy, director of the UCLA Smokefree Air for Everyone, a project of the Center for Health Policy Research at the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health.
