3 Arrested, 1 At-Large After Suspects Fire At LAPD Officers In Watts
One suspect is still at large while three have been arrested after an incident in which suspects are accused of firing at Los Angeles officers Saturday morning. No officers or bystanders were injured in the incident and the officers did not return fire, police said. The incident began after Los Angeles Police Department officers tried to pull over what they believe was a stolen SUV in Watts around 7:30 a.m. The vehicle fled from police, but crashed a few blocks away, around the intersection of 109th Street and Compton Avenue, police said. The four suspects inside got out of the vehicle and fired shots at the officers and ran away, according to the LAPD. The officers soon found and arrested three of them hiding in the area.

Armed Man in Custody After Hourslong Standoff in Northridge
A 37-year-old man was in custody Monday morning after an hours-long standoff with police at a Northridge home where two people were possibly inside, officials said. Officers were called to the 17000 block of Keswick Street about 1 a.m. after reports that man threatened his mother with a gun, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. The incident began in a car when the man pointed a gun at his mother. After the mother called police, the man then barricaded himself inside the home, where it is believed his father and possibly a caregiver were inside. A SWAT team surrounded the home and streets in the area.

14 Skid Row Overdoses In 3 Days From New Ingredient In Spice, Rescue Mission Says
For the second time in three days, several people were rushed to the hospital after apparent overdoses on Skid Row in downtown Los Angeles. Officials said synthetic marijuana, also known as "spice," was believed to be the drug of choice again and it may be due to a new ingredient being added to the already dangerous compound. A Los Angeles police officer who responded to the scene to help also had to be taken to the hospital after he became dizzy due to the smoke and fumes. "Spice has been an epidemic, and now with this extra ingredient, it's possibly a deadly epidemic," Rev. Andy Bales with the Union Rescue Mission said. Bales said a new homemade creation being combined with synthetic marijuana and sold on Skid Row created an alarming trend. He said at least 14 people have overdosed on spice along Skid Row in the last three days. On Friday, six people were over found unconscious on the corner of 5th and San Pedro streets.

New LAPD Harbor Division commander begins tackling homeless problem
In just a month on the job, the new commander of the LAPD's Harbor Division station already is moving to tackle the growing prevalence of homeless encampments on the streets of San Pedro. But, as he told a community group this week, “it's a balancing act” to make headway given a lack of resources, the need for compassion and legal restrictions on the police. Capt. Michael Oreb, a San Pedro native who was hand-picked for the Harbor Area assignment, told members of a police advisory board that a series of statewide laws passed over the past seven to eight years have played a significant role in the rise in crime and homelessness in the city of Los Angeles. He also said narcotics and mental illness are prevalent among the area's homeless encampments.

Pedestrian Fatally Struck By Vehicle In South LA; Hit-And-Run Driver Arrested
Police Friday were investigating the circumstances surrounding a deadly hit-and-run collision that took place in South Los Angeles. According to the Los Angeles Police Department, officers were sent around 11:30 p.m. Thursday to the area of Slauson Avenue and Gramercy Place for report of a traffic collision. Upon their arrival, authorities located a man lying in the street. Paramedics pronounced the victim dead at the scene. He is believed to be in his 30s, but the coroner's office is withholding his identity pending family notification. A preliminary investigation revealed a driver struck the man in a crosswalk and fled from the scene.

Woman Strips Naked on Downtown L.A. Street After Multi-County Pursuit: Police
A female driver accused of leading police and CHP officers on a wild pursuit through Los Angeles and Ventura counties Friday night was arrested after stripping off her clothes when the chase ended, authorities said. The incident began about 10:30 p.m. in the 1300 block of Loma Vista Avenue in Pasadena when authorities received an assault with a deadly weapon call, according to Lt. Vasken Gourdikan of the Pasadena Police Department. “She also vandalized some property at the residence,” he told reporters at a Saturday morning news conference. "Apparently, she perhaps rammed a few of the cars that were parked on the property and broke her parent's house window with a brick."

Husband of Child Care Provider Arrested on Suspicion of Child Molestation
Police are searching for additional victims of a 61-year-old man suspected of molesting two girls at a Del Rey home where his wife also runs a day care center. Pedro Aguirre Borda was arrested Wednesday in the 11500 block of Braddock Drive, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. Borda faces two felony counts of child molestation for the alleged abused that occurred in 2007, when Borda was 52 years old, police said. The first case was reported but no charges were filed. The second case, also in 2007, was reported this year, police said.

Driver in Stolen Car Pursuit Surrenders in Front of Police Station
The driver of a stolen car led police in a pursuit through the San Fernando Valley area Sunday before surrendering in front of a police station. The driver was later identified by the Los Angeles Police Department as Kenneth Martinez, 45, of Chatsworth. The stolen car chase began at 4:15 p.m. in Tarzana, the LAPD's West Valley Station said. Martinez, accused of being behind the wheel, was reported in the Northridge area going northbound at Roscoe Boulevard and Etiwanda Avenue by 5 p.m., blowing through stop signs and at times driving on the wrong side of the road.

Flight Attendant Accused Of Trying To Sneak Cocaine-Filled Luggage Pleads Not Guilty
A JetBlue flight attendant accused of trying to sneak a suitcase full of cocaine through Los Angeles International Airport has pleaded not guilty to a federal charge. City News Service says Marsha Gay Reynolds entered the plea Friday to possessing cocaine with intent to distribute. Authorities say during a random security screening at LAX in March, the former Jamaican beauty queen left her carry-on luggage, kicked off her Gucci high heels and bolted down an upward-moving escalator.

Police Helicopter Stops Train From Colliding With Stalled Vehicle On Tracks
A police helicopter crew is being credited with helping to stop a train from colliding with a car that got stuck on its tracks in Riverside. The Riverside Police Department says the chopper was working a call in the area of Panorama Road and Olivewood Avenue about 10:20 p.m. Saturday. But, at the same time, police said a radio call came in reporting that a vehicle had lost control and rolled over. It came to a stop on railroad tracks in the area of Dewey Street and Streeter Avenue. While flying overhead, the flight crew noticed the train was on the same set of tracks and was about two miles away from the car.

Us To States: Make It Easier For Ex-Prisoners To Obtain IDs
Attorney General Loretta Lynch is urging the nation's governors to make it easier for convicted felons to obtain state-issued identification after they get out of prison, part of a broader plan being announced Monday to help smooth the path for state and federal inmates who are preparing to re-enter society. The announcement, on the first day of National Reentry Week, is aimed at helping the roughly 600,000 state and federal prisoners who return each year to American neighborhoods to better acclimate to society and remove some of the hurdles ex-convicts face in getting jobs, education and housing.

AIDS Healthcare Foundation Sues LA Over Planned High-Rise
The AIDS Healthcare Foundation, better known for its efforts to put condoms on porn actors, is suing Los Angeles to stop a high-rise development that would go next door to its Hollywood headquarters. The suit, filed Thursday in Superior Court, also names the Palladium Project's developers. It seeks to overturn the City Council's approval last month of two 30-story towers containing more than 730 apartments, as well as shops, restaurants and parking. The foundation, headquartered in a 24-story tower next door, has been an opponent of huge development in the area. It says this project packs too much residential development into too small an area. It also accuses the city of violating environmental quality standards and other regulations. The project's supporters say it would bring needed housing to the area.

Free parking in downtown L.A.? Get it while it lasts
It may well be the most jealously guarded secret in all of downtown Los Angeles: For the last two months, the city's subterranean Pershing Square parking lot has charged absolutely nothing for parking. That's right, in a city where downtown real estate prices are skyrocketing -- and new construction has made public parking spaces increasingly scarce -- motorists beneath Pershing Square have been nabbing daily parking spaces for free. The parking bonanza is the result of a settlement of a class-action lawsuit against the city of Los Angeles.
