No suspect found after intense manhunt in Hollywood neighborhood
Hollywood got an unusual wake-up call Wednesday, when Los Angeles police officers swarmed the neighborhood in a predawn manhunt that ended with no sign of the man they were looking for. A police helicopter buzzed over the apartments and houses along Franklin Avenue, circling in the cloudy sky. Officers used beat-up undercover vehicles to block off streets as SWAT teams scoured the neighborhood. The Gelson's parking lot became a makeshift command post. Dozens of officers spent most of Wednesday looking for a man who was involved in what police described as a “confrontation” with an off-duty officer who ultimately opened fire. The man fled — it was unclear whether he was struck by the gunfire — launching an intense search that dragged into the afternoon.

101 Freeway briefly closed in Sherman Oaks after LAPD nabs suspects in murder probe
The northbound 101 Freeway was briefly shut down on Wednesday night as Los Angeles police arrested two people in connection with a murder case, authorities said. Officers detained two suspects in a black pickup truck about 6:20 p.m., LAPD Officer Matthew Ludwig said. They were stopped by officers about one block before the Woodman Avenue exit, Ludwid said. At least one of the suspects was wanted in connection to a murder case, he added.

Man Sought in Fatal Shooting of Brother in South Los Angeles
Authorities asked the public for help Thursday in their search for a man who allegedly shot and killed his brother at a home in the Willowbrook area of South Los Angeles. The shooting occurred in the 2200 block of East 120th Street just before 10 p.m. Tuesday, the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department stated in a news release. David Millender, 48, apparently got into an argument with his brother Willie Millender while the two were at their home, and at some point pulled out a gun and fatally shot his 62-year-old brother, the Sheriff's Department stated.

Cops claim harassment for speaking up against alleged LAPD arrest quotas
A $10 million payout to Los Angeles Police Department officers alleging they were pressured to meet illegal traffic ticket quotas may get pricier.Two more LAPD officers filed suit Monday alleging they were victims of a backlash for not complying with and for speaking out against what they say were unlawful arrest and citation quotas. North Hollywood Division Officers Michael Marciano and Andrew Cota filed the lawsuit Monday in Los Angeles Superior Court alleging the LAPD violated state labor laws. “Plaintiffs spoke out not only for the rights of themselves and their fellow officers, but also for the rights of the public, by speaking out against what they believed to be an unlawful citation and arrest quota as well as retaliation, harassment and/or intimidation for refusing to comply with and/or reporting such an illegal quota,” according to the officers' complaint.

Suspects arrested in connection with killing of high school basketball standout
Three men were arrested in connection with the shooting death of a 21-year-old former Narbonne High School basketball standout and the wounding of a friend, police said Thursday. Two of the suspects, David Lee Allen and Khalif Azon Ferguson, were arrested Friday, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. Both men were charged Tuesday, each with one count of murder and two counts of attempted murder, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office.

LAPD hacked into iPhone of slain wife of 'Shield' actor, documents show
Los Angeles police investigators obtained a method to open the locked iPhone belonging to the slain wife of "The Shield" actor Michael Jace, according to court papers reviewed by The Times. LAPD detectives found an alternative way to bypass the security features on the white iPhone 5S belonging to April Jace, whom the actor is accused of killing at their South L.A. home in 2014, according to a search warrant filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court. The bypass occurred earlier this year, during the same period that the FBI was demanding that Apple unlock the iPhone 5C of San Bernardino shooter Syed Rizwan Farook. The FBI eventually said it found another method for unlocking the phone without using Apple.

Driver Leads Police on Brief Pursuit, Slams Into Tree in Beverly Hills Before Being Apprehended
A driver of a silver SUV was taken into custody Wednesday evening after leading authorities on a brief pursuit and slamming into a tree in Beverly Hills, officials said. The chase began about 10:40 p.m. in the Los Angeles Police Department's Wilshire Division, a spokesperson for the agency said, adding that the motorist was suspected of reckless driving. Sky5 video showed authorities chasing the vehicle on surface streets through Hancock Park, Hollywood and West Hollywood before the SUV struck a tree at the intersection of Sunset Boulevard and Alta Drive in Beverly Hills.

'Grim Sleeper' Suspect Had Conviction For Gang Rape In Germany, DA Discloses
The jury has begun deliberations in the murder trial of accused "Grim Sleeper" serial killer Lonnie Franklin, even as new information was disclosed Wednesday about the defendant's record out of the jury's presence. In a hearing held while the jury was behind closed doors, prosecutor Beth Silverman disclosed that Franklin has a conviction for a sex crime outside the United States on his record - a gang rape in Germany when he was in the Army. Silverman told the court that Franklin and two friends borrowed a car, drove to a nearby village, dragged a woman to the car and sexually assaulted her.

The Sheriff's Department asked for the public's help Wednesday to find other victims who might have been approached by a registered sex offender suspected of attempting to kidnap a 10-year-old girl in Norwalk. Around 6:40 p.m. Sunday in the 13000 block of Clarkdale Avenue, a man tried to pull the girl into a tan-colored Toyota Corolla, said Detective Henry Jaquez of the sheriff's Norwalk Station. Detectives later identified the suspect as Armando Hernandez, 54, of Norwalk, Jaquez said.

Coalition of healthcare, labor & law enforcement organizations and leaders join to oppose California's recreational marijuana ballot measure
A broad coalition including the California Police Chiefs Association, California Hospital Association, California Teamsters, California State Sheriffs' Association, California Peace Officers Association,Los Angeles Police Protective League, the Small Growers Association, and Democrat and Republican elected officials is launching its opposition effort against the proposed Adult Use of Marijuana Act to legalize recreational marijuana. The opposition campaign will wage a robust effort through November and will lay out a multitude of loopholes that concern even those generally supportive of legalization. A recent white paper by the San Diego District Attorney's office points out, "The initiative allows persons convicted of dealing large amounts of controlled substances such as heroin, methamphetamine or cocaine to become 'legal marijuana dealers.' There is nothing in the initiative that will prevent anyone with a prior conviction involving dealing any drug (Cocaine, PCP, Heroin, Methamphetamine, etc.) from getting a license..."

Police balk as states expand gun rights
Guns in bars. Guns in airports. Guns in day-care centers and sports arenas. Conservative state lawmakers around the country are pressing to weaken an array of gun regulations, in some cases greatly expanding where owners can carry their weapons. But the legislators are encountering stiff opposition from what has been a trusted ally: law enforcement. In more than a dozen states with long traditions of robust support for gun ownership rights, and where legislatures have moved to relax gun laws during the past year, the local police have become increasingly vocal in denouncing the measures. They say the new laws expose officers to greater danger and prevent them from doing their jobs effectively.
