LA County moves toward possible millionaire's tax to fight homelessness
The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to pursue a potential ballot measure that would tax top-income earners to combat rising homelessness. Supervisors also agreed to conduct an internal audit of how the county spends money on homelessness. In a 3-2 vote, the board directed its top executive and the county's legislative advocates in Sacramento to pursue a change in state law to grant counties the authority to seek a ballot measure for a tax on personal income above $1 million a year, which would generate about $243 million a year. In addition to the tax, other options to raise money for homeless programs include a marijuana tax, a parcel tax and redirection of Measure B trauma tax funds.

Flooding, mudslide, traffic mess: Hollywood Hills water main break
A broken water main in the lower part of the Hollywood Hills caused flooding and mud flows Wednesday, undermining a hillside sloping down to Sunset Boulevard and closing a number of streets, the Los Angeles Fire Department reported. The main break at 8430 Grandview Dr. was discovered around 12:30 a.m., according to the fire department. The gushing water undermined the hillside and sent debris and mud onto a number of streets, including Hillside and Franklin avenues and Kings and Queens roads, according to the fire department. A number of streets above Sunset Boulevard were shut down because of the debris.

LA farmers markets start signing up to accept food stamps
The number of farmers markets in Los Angeles seems to be on the rise, but the number of people who have access to their products wasn't — until now. A sign-up event was held Tuesday morning on the steps of L.A. City Hall to encourage local farmers markets to accept CalFresh EBT cards for payment, following a motion written by Councilman Jose Huizar and approved unanimously by the L.A. City Council last week that would make it mandatory for the produce-selling businesses to accept the electronic food stamps. “The bottom line is this: There are several food deserts in the city of L.A. where people have a difficult time accessing fresh produce,” Huizar told KPCC. The lack of accessible fresh produce drives them to purchase other items that aren't as healthy, he said.

Dangerous prescription drug battle plan for LA County: Let's put it off
Adoption of a county plan to battle a wave of prescription drug abuse was put off by the Los Angeles Board of Supervisors Tuesday. The proposed ordinance would require pharmaceutical companies to develop programs for the collection and disposal of unused drugs and syringes.
Supervisor Michael Antonovich, who championed the ordinance, recommended that the vote be postponed until June 14 to give environmentalists, pharmaceutical companies, retailers and other interested parties more time to reach agreement. “It is important that the county make take-back options available to the public as soon as possible,” Antonovich said.
