A convicted felon was added Thursday to the FBI's Most Wanted  list in connection to the murder of his pregnant girlfriend and unborn child last month, authorities said.
Philip Patrick Policarpio, 39, is wanted for the April 12 murder during a gathering with friends in the 500 block of N. Virgil Avenue in the East Hollywood area. Policarpio got into an argument with his girlfriend who was 17 weeks pregnant at the time, the FBI said. He began to beat her with his fists, then pulled a gun and shot her in the head, killing her instantly. It was "in front of everyone," according to Special Agent Scott Garriola, a member of the FBI's Los Angeles Fugitives Task Force.

Suspect in 2-Year-Old Girl's Stabbing Death Pleads Not Guilty
A 22-year-old man accused of fatally stabbing his live-in girlfriend's 2-year-old daughter and wounding her pregnant mother pleaded not guilty Thursday to a count of murder and two counts of attempted murder. Lataz Gray attacked his girlfriend and the woman's daughter with a knife May 2 at a home in the 3500 block of Arlington Avenue. police said. The girl died at a hospital, but her mother -- believed to be about five months pregnant at the time -- survived the attack. Police said Gray, arrested May 3, was not the toddler's father. Las Vegas Blames California For Spike In Crimes
Las Vegas is blaming two California laws for a spike in murders and other crimes. The sheriff of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department claimed a number of crimes that happened in Sin City have been traced back to Californian. Sheriff Joe Lombardo blamed AB 109, which allows for early release of certain inmates, and Proposition 47, which reduces nonviolent crimes to misdemeanors. “Individuals we're able to identify, and also the victims of those crimes – we're seeing a significant increase in individuals that have gang affiliation, gang association directly related to California,” Lombardo said.

California Poised For November Showdown Over Death Penalty
Death penalty supporters are setting the stage for a November showdown over whether to speed up executions in California or do away with them entirely. Nearly 750 convicted killers are sitting on the nation's largest death row, but no one has been executed in California in a decade because of ongoing legal challenges. Only 13 condemned inmates have been executed since 1978 — far more have died of natural causes or suicide. Crime victims, prosecutors and other death penalty supporters plan to submit about 585,000 signatures Thursday for a ballot measure to streamline what both sides call a broken system. Opponents have already turned in signatures for a dueling initiative to abolish execution.

California Senate approves sweeping gun-control measures
Democrats in the California Senate approved a wide-ranging series of gun control bills Thursday, reviving an effort to significantly tighten California's already strict gun laws in the wake of last year's terrorist attack in San Bernardino. Lawmakers voted to outlaw the sale of assault weapons with easily detachable magazines and to require that people turn in magazines capable of holding more than 10 rounds. They also backed a variety of other measures aimed at restricting access to guns and ammunition or limiting the carnage they can inflict. The effort drew a sharp rebuke from gun rights supporters who say squeezing lawful gun owners even further won't make people safer. It also laid bare tense differences in personality and strategy between senior California Democrats. Legislative leaders are rushing to head off a ballot measure advocated by Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom, a fellow Democrat, asking voters to enact many of the same policies. They worry the initiative will fail at the ballot box or fire up gun rights supporters, potentially increasing turnout of conservative voters who could give Republicans an edge in close districts.

LA Council President Vows To Take Stand Against Hate Speech
Los Angeles City Council President Herb Wesson says he's concerned about his safety and that of his family's after a City Hall critic allegedly made a criminal threat against him. On Thursday morning, he vowed to take a stand against hate speech. "As a young man, I sat in the kitchen table of my grandmothers and I heard them tell my aunts and my uncles of liquored-up Klansmen running through the south, terrorizing black people," Wesson said during a press conference. Wesson spoke out after he was handed a public comment card at a committee meeting last week that contained images of a burning cross and a person hanging from a tree by a noose. At the center of the card was a drawing of what appears to be a triangular-shaped person in a Ku Klux Klan hood carrying a noose and a sign that says "Herb = N-word."
