Off-Duty Sheriff's Deputy Killed In Fiery Motorcycle Crash In Corona
A 25-year-old sheriff's deputy was killed in a fiery crash while riding his motorcycle in Corona, police said Saturday. According to the Corona Police Department, officers and firefighters were sent shortly before 4:30 p.m. Friday to the area of Hidden Valley, located east of the 15 Freeway, for report of a severe injury related traffic collision. Upon their arrival, authorities learned two motorcycles and two vehicles were involved in the collision. Paramedics transported the two motorcyclists to Riverside Community Hospital for treatment of serious injuries sustained in the crash.

California police misconduct records will remain secret after bill dies in committee
California's strict policy against releasing information about police misconduct will remain in place after a Senate committee killed a bill Friday that would have opened up some records to public disclosure . But law enforcement organizations contended the bill would invade officer privacy while existing civilian review boards and potential prosecution provided enough outside accountability of police. "Strong relationships between the community and law enforcement is critical to good policing," Craig Lally, president of the Los Angeles Police Protective League said in a statement. "However, SB 1286 was poorly written, with no input from law enforcement and would have done nothing to improve relationships with the community."

Man Shot In Chest In Venice; Suspect Sought
A search is underway for a suspect who fled after shooting a man in the chest in Venice early Tuesday morning. According to police, the shooting occurred around 3:30 a.m. in the 700 block of Broadway. The suspect fled the scene in a gray vehicle, investigators said. An ambulance rushed the victim to the hospital. Authorities said he is in stable condition and was undergoing surgery. Police have not made any arrests.

Woman shot inside North Hollywood internet cafe in critical condition A 25-year-old woman was in critical condition after she was shot inside an internet cafe in North Hollywood late Saturday night, Los Angeles police said Sunday. The woman was struck by gunfire shortly after 11 p.m. Saturday while inside the cafe in the 7500 block of Lankershim Boulevard near Saticoy Street, said Sgt. Lou Torres of LAPD's North Hollywood Division. “The victim. ... Received gunshot wounds and is in critical condition at (Providence) Holy Cross” Medical Center, Torres said Sunday. The victim sustained a graze wound to her head and a gunshot wound to her torso, said Office Mike Lopez, a spokesman for LAPD's Media Relations Section. Vietnam War memorial wall in Venice vandalized: 'Disgusting and disrespectful act'
Vandals in Venice sprayed a thick sheen of silver paint over most of the 2,273 names of Vietnam veterans on a mural along Pacific Avenue, during the week before Memorial Day, it was reported Sunday. Venice resident Stewart Oscars drove by Wednesday and noticed the damage that covered the mural, which has stood in the same place untouched since 1992 on Pacific Avenue near Sunset Court, the Los Angeles Times reported. "It's like a direct attack. If you have any sense of history, you'd never do this,'' Oscars told The Times. "That's lots of names. Those are people."

Fugitive on FBI's Most Wanted List, Accused of Killing Pregnant Girlfriend, Captured in San Diego
Authorities on Monday announced the capture of a “very dangerous fugitive” accused of killing his 32-year-old girlfriend and her unborn child in East Hollywood last month. Philip Patrick Policarpio, a convicted felon wanted by the Los Angeles Police Department and placed on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list, was apprehended Sunday at the California-Mexico border by U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents, FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller said in a statement. Policarpio, 39, was taken into custody at the San Ysidro Port of Entry as he crossed into the United States from Tijuana, according to Eimiller, adding that the suspect was on U.S. soil at the time of the arrest.

Teen Charged With Fatally Stabbing Woman Who Let Him Stay at Her West Hills Home
A 16-year-old boy was charged with murder in the fatal stabbing of a mother who was allowing the teen to stay at her West Hills home, prosecutors said Friday. Steven Paul Main of Bell Canyon, who was charged as an adult with the allegation that he used a knife, pled not guilty Thursday, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office said. He was being held in lieu of more than $2 million bail and was set to return to court on June 24.

Puppy killer hunt in Westlake: $20,000 reward
A $20,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of a man who killed a small dog in the Westlake area earlier this month. The Los Angeles Police Department, the office of City Councilman Paul Koretz, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, Social Compassion in Legislation and Davey's Voice — a Santa Barbara-based anti-animal cruelty organization — are joining together to sponsor the reward. The groups will hold a press conference Wednesday at City Hall to appeal for any possible witnesses to the crime to come forward. The killing took place around 1:30 p.m. on May 14 in the 1600 block of East First Street, according to the LAPD.

CHP Detains Driver With Saggy Pants After Stolen Range Rover Pursuit
California Highway Patrol officers took a man with his pants around his ankles, a passenger, and a pup into custody after a stolen Range Rover pursuit ended on the 105 Freeway Saturday afternoon. The Los Angeles Police Department began pursuing the stolen Range Rover in the Hancock Park area. CHP officers took over as the driver reached dangerously high speeds. The driver surrendered, lying flat on the ground. When he rose to approach officers to be taken into custody, his saggy pants fell to his ankles. A passenger revealed a black and white puppy was inside of the Range Rover. Officers detained the passenger, and carried the pup to a CHP cruiser.

Juvenile Arrested in Granada Hills Hit-and-Run That Left Woman, Teen Injured: LAPD
An arrest was made Saturday in connection with a hit-and-run crash in Granada Hills the previous night that left a woman and teen girl injured, according to LAPD. The juvenile suspect was with relatives when he turned himself in about 3 p.m.; he was arrested on suspicion of felony hit-and-run after being interviewed by investigators, said Los Angeles Police Department Detective Bill Bustos. The collision occurred about 9:50 p.m. Friday as the victims were crossing Chatsworth Street between Balboa Boulevard and Genesta Avenue, according to an LAPD news release.

Female Pedestrian Struck, Killed In Van Nuys Crash
A female pedestrian was killed after being struck by a car in Van Nuys. The driver initially fled the scene but later surrendered to police. The incident occurred around 11:40 p.m. Sunday in the 16400 block of Victory Boulevard. Los Angeles police said a 57-year-old woman was crossing the street when she was struck. Investigators initially thought at least two vehicles struck the woman, but later said it appeared she was struck by one car. A Good Samaritan in a red sedan stopped and called 911 for help. However, the pedestrian's injuries were just too severe. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

LAPD Patrolling Intersections With High Fatalities, Injuries Across City
Los Angeles officers are putting special attention on intersections that have the highest number of fatalities and severe injuries in the city. Drivers are being cited for speeding, running lights and failing to yield. The increased enforcement is a response to a dramatic increase in traffic deaths. According to Officer Mauricio Valdovinos, speed and people not paying attention are two of many factors that contribute to the increased injury and death rates at the intersections. "With the unofficial start of summer coming up this weekend, we have a lot more drivers on the road, we have a lot more kids out of school and we have parents that are no longer dropping kids off in the morning so we have them traveling throughout the city," Officer Mauricio Valdovinos said.

Memorial Day traffic snarled due to pursuit
Because of the holiday things were going pretty well on our LA freeways. That all changed when a man named Gilbert Barajas led police and CHP on a 2.5 hour chase banging up cars and almost hitting someone on a bike. Now, he's facing some significant charges. The chase started in South Gate on a traffic stop where the KIA Sorrento came up as a vehicle stolen in Los Angeles. From that point on, the chase was on. It was on lots of freeways, residential streets... on TV. People came out of their houses to look and over on the 405 near the 710 where it finally ended cars were stopped and people were outside their cars on the 405 taking pictures and selfies.

Deadly Shooting Investigation Underway In East LA
Homicide detectives Tuesday investigated the shooting death of a man in East Los Angeles. The shooting took place shortly before 10:00 p.m. Monday at a home located in the 600 block of South Ford Boulevard, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Authorities were sent to the area for report of an assault with a deadly weapon. When they arrived, they located a man suffering from a gunshot wound to his upper torso. Paramedics pronounced the victim dead at the scene. His identity is being withheld pending family notification.

After San Bernardino, Counselor Faces Other Side Of Crisis
Mandy Pifer drove to the Los Angeles Police Department last week and prepared to face a fresh wave of grief. Pifer, a crisis counselor, has spent the last six years comforting people in the aftermath of death. The woman whose sister killed herself with an electric chainsaw. The 8-year-old girl who found her mother shot to death on their couch. The grief she was preparing to encounter was her own. Nearly six months ago, her boyfriend Shannon Johnson was among the 14 killed in the San Bernardino attack. Grappling with the anguish, she left counseling to mourn, retreating into her Koreatown apartment filled with their photographs.

Men With Ties to Mexican Cartel Arrested With $2.6M in Meth at Hooters, Officials Say
A Southern California Hooters parking lot became the scene of an undercover drug bust involving alleged associates of a Mexican drug cartel, authorities said. Five men with ties to the Sinaloa cartel were arrested Thursday when they showed up to the Ontario restaurant at 725 N. Milliken Ave. with 53 pounds of methamphetamine to meet undercover officers, the California Department of Justice said. Authorities released photos of the more than 40 bags of methamphetamine with an estimated street value of $2.6 million.

Garcetti appoints 2 deputy mayors to carry out job, economy policies
Mayor Eric Garcetti announced the appointment Friday of two deputy mayors who will carry out his policies on jobs and the economy. Raymond Chan, who leads the Department of Building and Safety, was named interim deputy mayor for economic development. Brenda Shockley, president of Community Build, a job training and education nonprofit, will serve as deputy mayor for economic opportunity. The two appointments split a job that had been performed by one deputy mayor. Kelli Bernard, who had being in that position, stepped down May 20 to become engineering firm AECOM's chief executive for the Los Angeles metro area.

L.A. to Convert Motel Units to 500 Apartments for Homeless Veterans
The city of Los Angeles has approved a deal for nonprofit and private developers to convert “nuisance” motels into 500 permanent supportive apartments for homeless veterans. Officials called it a major step forward toward developing large-scale housing for hundreds of homeless veterans. Advocates say about 2,700 homeless veterans remain in the county, despite an intensive drive by local and federal officials.
