Filmmakers Documented Murder Investigations In South Los Angeles
A new documentary on the festival circuit takes an unflinching look at what it's like to live in South Los Angeles.  The filmmakers behind "South Bureau Homicide" spent a year in the community, looking at how residents work with the Los Angeles Police Department's homicide investigators. They also had access to murder scenes and interviews with the detectives who investigate them.  "You witness quite a lot of pain in a very intimate way," said Mike Cooley, the film's co-director. "We were at real murder scenes where real peoples' lives were lost. And you see how the officers have to set that aside and get right to their investigations."

Handgun, cans of gasoline found in UCLA gunman's car
UCLA gunman Mainak Sarkar's car was located Friday in Culver City and investigators found a handgun and several gasoline cans in its trunk, but the containers were only thought to have been used for refueling the vehicle during the suspect's trip to Los Angeles from Minnesota. Someone riding a bicycle about 1:50 p.m. on Washington Place, just west of Sawtelle Boulevard, recognized the parked vehicle from media reports and called the Los Angeles Police Department's Pacific Station, said Los Angeles Police Department Chief of Detectives Matt Blake. Investigators had been looking for the silver-gray Nissan Sentra, registered in Sarkar's home state of Minnesota, since he fatally shot one of his former professors, William S. Klug, then himself, in a campus office shortly before 10 a.m. Wednesday.

Charter groups bridle at LAUSD's order to 'wand' students to detect weapons
The box of hand-held metal detectors arrived out of the blue and without an explanation in December. Principal Kristin Botello shoved them in a closet and carried on with her work at her South Los Angeles charter school. Botello later learned the box came with a mandate that requires Animo Jackie Robinson High School to conduct random daily searches of its students with the wands. Los Angeles Unified School District officials say the policy protects students from classmates who might be carrying weapons.  The charter school and its parent organization, Green Dot Public Schools, have refused to comply with the requirement, arguing that random searches will undermine the safety that comes from strong pupil-educator relationships.

Candid and graphic, it offers specific details about her experience after the January 2015 night Brock Turner was seen assaulting an unconscious, half-naked woman behind a dumpster near a fraternity house. She describes the first time she came across an in-depth article about what had happened.

US cities see unexplained rise in violent crimes this year
Violent crimes — from homicides and rapes to robberies — have been on the rise in many major U.S. cities, yet experts can't point to a single reason why and the jump isn't enough to suggest there's a trend. Still, it is stumping law enforcement officials, who are seeking a way to combat the problem. “It's being reported on at local levels, but in my view, it's not getting the attention at the national level it deserves,” FBI Director James Comey said recently. “I don't know what the answer is, but holy cow, do we have a problem.”  Americans have grown accustomed to low crime rates since a peak in the 1990s. But law enforcement started seeing a spike last year that has continued unabated. What's unusual, however, is that it's not happening everywhere. Chicago and Los Angeles are seeing homicides on the rise, but other places like Miami and Oakland are not.

L.A. council backs $198.5 million in financial aid for downtown hotel project
The Los Angeles City Council voted Friday to back a $198.5-million financial aid package for a high-profile downtown hotel project that has been in the works for more than a decade. On a 12-0 vote, the council agreed to provide a combination of subsidies and loans to Related Cos., which is seeking to build two towers — one 38 stories, the other 16 — across from Walt Disney Concert Hall. The council's proposal would allow Related to keep nearly half of the $396.9 million in tax revenue that would be generated for the city by the project over 25 years. That money would normally flow into the general fund, which pays for police, firefighters and other city services.
