Orlando shooting: All but one victim identified, officials say
Officials said Monday they have identified all but one of the 49 victims killed at a gay nightclub in Orlando in the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history. Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer said the next of kin of 24 victims of the rampage by gunman Omar Mateen had been notified. He spoke Monday at a press conference near the Pulse nightclub, the scene of the early Sunday massacre. The number of victims was revised down to 49 from 50 as an earlier toll from officials had included the gunman, FBI Special Agent in Charge Paul Wysopal said. As Americans mourned the worst terror attack on U.S. soil since 9/11, police investigated the gunman's ties to ISIS and examined whether others could have been involved.

Man arrested with arsenal of weapons in Santa Monica was headed to LA Pride, police say
A tip about a possible prowler in Santa Monica led to the arrest Sunday of a man whose car contained multiple weapons, ammunition and bomb-making materials -- hours after a gunman killed 50 people at a gay nightclub in Florida and shortly before a massive gay-lesbian parade and street festival in West Hollywood. James Wesley Howell, 20, of Indiana, was arrested around 5 a.m. on 11th Street south of Olympic Boulevard, according to Santa Monica Police Department Chief Jacqueline Seabrooks. He was being held in lieu of $500,000 bail, according to jail records.

Suspect With Arsenal In Car In Santa Monica Was On Probation
A suspect who was taken into custody in Santa Monica after authorities discovered an arsenal in his car that included explosive chemicals and assault rifles early Sunday morning was on probation. Police said 20-year-old James Howell of Indiana was arrested after officers found three assault rifles, high-capacity magazines and ammunition, along with a 5-gallon bucket with chemicals capable of creating an explosive device in his vehicle. Officials responded to the 1700 block of 11th Street after receiving a call from a concerned citizen after Howell knocked on their door and window. Authorities made contact with Howell, who was sitting in a car registered in Indiana, who told them he was there for the Los Angeles Pride festival.

Man Fatally Shoots Ex-Girlfriend's Teen Daughters, Then Self
A man shot and killed his ex-girlfriend's two teenage daughters, then turned the gun on himself in a Panorama City murder-suicide, police said. The Saturday night shooting stemmed from an argument between the 46-year-old man and his 41-year-old former girlfriend at an apartment in the 8500 block of Cedros Avenue, said Det. Richard Wheeler of the Los Angeles Police Department Valley Bureau. The man first shot the woman's son, who managed to escape. He opened fire on the girls, then shot himself, Wheeler said. The woman was also injured in the shooting, but it was unclear if she had been struck by gunfire. She and her son were both taken to the hospital in stable condition.

10-Year-Old Girl Critically Wounded in Drive-By Shooting in Boyle Heights
10-year-old girl was wounded in a drive-by shooting in Boyle Heights Thursday, but the victim was not the shooter's intended target, police said. The shooting occurred at about 6 p.m. near the intersection of Rogers Avenue and Chicago Street, according to Officer Mike Lopez of the Los Angeles Police Department's Media Relations Section. Police said the girl was walking to a nearby market for a soda with her sister when she was struck in the back of the head. She was taken to Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center where she underwent surgery and was listed in critical condition.

Driver Sought After 4-Year-Old Boy Struck in South LA Hit-and-Run
Police were asking for the public's help Friday in identifying a driver who left the scene after striking and seriously injuring a 4-year-old boy who was walking in a crosswalk in South Los Angeles. The boy, who was walking with his 8-year-old sister, was hit by a tan or beige Dodge minivan about 4:20 p.m. on Wednesday at the intersection of Figueroa and 43rd streets, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. "The driver slowed down and then drove away south on Figueroa Street without stopping to identify himself or (render) aid as required by law,' 'according to a police statement.

Suspected Car Thief Who Led Officers On Pursuit Arrested
A man accused of stealing a Honda Accord before leading officers on a car chase across multiple Los Angeles freeways and streets, followed by a foot chase, was arrested today. Authorities took the suspect, identified as Antonio Regalado, into custody at 2 a.m., Officer Raymond Baron of the Los Angeles Police Department's West L.A. Division told City News Service. The K-9 Unit helped locate Regalado — a 22-year-old Los Angeles resident with numerous outstanding warrants and aliases — at his home, Baron said. He was then transferred to the LAPD's Mission Division station.

Person Wounded in Police Shooting
A suspect was wounded in a police shooting in the Hyde Park section of South Los Angeles Friday night. No officers were injured in the shooting, which occurred about 8:45 p.m. in the area of Slauson and Brynhurst avenues, Los Angeles police Officer Mike Lopez said. The wounded man was taken to a hospital, but no information about that person's condition was immediately available. A citywide tactical alert -- requiring all on-duty Los Angeles Police Department officers to continue with their patrols until called off -- was issued in connection with the officer-involved shooting, Lopez said.

Gangsters get 40-to-life in Sunset Boulevard chase, killing
Two gang members were sentenced Friday to 40 years to life in state prison for the murder of a 30-year-old man who was shot while being chased on Sunset Boulevard in the Echo Park area of Los Angeles just over five years ago. Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Stephen A. Marcus said Michael David “did nothing to warrant the reaction” by Peter Michael Lopez, 27, and Hakop Jacko Sardaryan, 26, noting that the victim was “actually trying to be friendly to the defendants” and was “running away when he was shot” by Lopez on May 7, 2011. David was on Sunset Boulevard near Echo Park Street just after midnight when he was confronted. Authorities said the victim lived nearby and was not a gang member.

Series of Shootings in L.A. County Leaves at Least 7 Dead, 5 Wounded
A spate of violence in Los Angeles County over a 24-hour period left at least seven people dead and at least five others injured, authorities said Saturday. A series of shootings kept sheriff's detectives busy from Carson to the San Gabriel Valley until early Saturday, authorities said. One victim was shot as she walked down the street, another while he worked on a car and two others as they were leaving a party. “It was a busy night,” Deputy Grace Medrano said. The violence began about 3:45 p.m. Friday when a gunman got out of a parked vehicle and fired several rounds at a man riding his bike in the 7500 block of Compton Avenue, authorities said. The victim was struck multiple times and later died; the suspect fled in the vehicle.

Deadly Deputy-Involved Shooting Reported In East Los Angeles
Authorities on Saturday said LA County Sheriff's deputies were involved in the shooting and wounding of a suspect in East Los Angeles. The shooting occurred about 2:30 p.m. in the 5200 block of Corona Avenue in Maywood, officials said. County Sheriff's Homicide detectives were dispatched to the location to investigate. Saturday evening, officials revealed the suspect succumbed to his injuries. The suspect was taken to an area hospital. No deputies were injured. Officials said they were responding to a domestic violence call when they encountered the suspect in a bedroom.

Visas for eleven victims of human trafficking
Eleven Filipino guest workers now have visas to work in the U.S. The workers, as one says, are "survivors" of human trafficking. Earlier, they won a 15-million dollar judgment again L'Amande French Bakery. Their attorney says the Torrance and Beverly Hills bakeries are now closed. With their families now by their side the workers spoke out about their ordeal. They say they were forced to work 17 hour days, at three dollars an hour. They say their boss humiliated them. After being lured from the Philippines they say they were told they owed their boss eleven thousand dollars.

2 Dead After Small Plane Crashes Into Hawthorne Apartment Building
Two people were killed following a small plane crash into an apartment building in Hawthorne. The apartment building in located in the 4900 block of Broadway, not far from Hawthorne Airport. The two dead were both on the plane. Reports said residents of the building were all accounted for. It was also not known if the plane was approaching the airport or had just departed. The crash — occurring just after 5 p.m. — also touched off a fire, according to Desmond Shaw flying above in Sky2. He said from the angle the plane hit the building it was most likely after take-off.

Corona Gang Sweep Targeting Mexican Mafia Nets 52 Arrests, $1.6 million in Drugs: Authorities
A massive gang sweep in Riverside County resulted in the arrest of 52 people Thursday and the seizure of almost $1.6 million worth of drugs, according to authorities. The raids targeted suspected members of the Corona Varrio Locos and the Mexican Mafia, according to police, and came in response to a spike in local crime. The operation involved more than 300 state and local officers. In addition to drugs, authorities also seized 67 firearms, including assault rifles and semiautomatic weapons, and more than $95,000 in cash, according to Corona police Sgt. Brent Nelson.

Waves Project Gives Wounded Vets A Chance To Move Pain-Free As Certified Divers
Combat wounded veterans learn a life-changing lesson with the help of the Waves Project.
On land, U.S. Army veteran Ceasar Ramirez is locked in his wheelchair, paralyzed from the chest down. But in the water, he's free to move however he wants as a certified scuba diver. Ramirez doesn't take the freedom of floating weightless in the water for granted. "It's freedom because I'm out of the chair. That's one of the things that I've been wanting since my accident - to get out of the chair," he said. The nonprofit trains veterans to become open-water divers, giving them a chance to discover a deep blue paradise no matter their disability. "We started it to share our passion with veterans coming back from Afghanistan and Iraq. To show them something that's fun, get them involved with our passion," founder Steve Rubin said. "What we didn't know at the time is the therapeutic values that the water brings."

Ruling: Counties May Restrict Concealed Carry Gun Laws
In California, an appellate court ruling upheld the status quo - applicants who want a license to carry a concealed weapon must show good cause. An 11-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said law enforcement officials can require applicants for a concealed weapons permit to show they are in immediate danger or have another good reason for a permit beyond self-defense. Hailed as a victory by gun control advocates, the ruling said people do not have a right to carry concealed weapons in public under the Second Amendment.

Falling Tiles in Famed Downtown Los Angeles Tunnel Prompt Closure for Emergency Repairs
A nearly 100-year-old downtown Los Angeles tunnel that is frequently featured in car commercials, music videos and films, including "Blade Runner," has been closed since Wednesday, after tiles had fallen from the walls and were found strewn along the road, city officials said Friday. The City Council on Friday approved an emergency motion to spend $500,000 to hire two contractors to remove the fallen tiles and other debris from the Second Street Tunnel, and to perform any required restoration.

Metro seeks permanent transit tax for LA County to raise billions to fix gridlock
A sweeping transit plan unveiled by Metro officials Friday called for much more than just unchoking the strangled freeways across Los Angeles County. It called upon voters to support the most ambitious traffic-management plan in the nation through a permanent transit sales tax. If approved by the Metro board this month, a newly named Los Angeles County Traffic Improvement Plan measure will appear on the November ballot. “If we don't fix it, we'll be eaten alive by congestion,” declared Phillip A. Washington, CEO of the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority, during a late afternoon media briefing downtown, as commuters sat bumper to bumper outside. “It is the most aggressive initiative in the country today ... and the most balanced.

Andy Liberman was excited to vote for Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders. So excited, in fact, that the 66-year-old mental health advocate wanted to go a step further to be part of the election itself — he became a poll worker. But when Tuesday arrived, Liberman's enthusiasm dimmed when a host of problems cropped up at his Venice election site, which ran out of Democratic ballots. Voters required so many different kinds of ballots “it was difficult at first to realize what the correct ballot was to give them,” Liberman said, adding that he got about two hours of training beforehand.

L.A. County putting pressure on Sacramento to impose a 'millionaires' tax' to combat homelessness
With a deadline fast approaching, Los Angeles County officials are turning up the pressure in Sacramento for a change in state law that would allow them to impose a “millionaires' tax” to fund expanded efforts to combat homelessness. Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas met one-on-one Wednesday with Gov. Jerry Brown, Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon and state Senate leader Kevin de León to make a pitch for the proposal.
