Man Arrested Before LA Pride Faces Molestation Charge An Indiana man facing weapons and ammunitions charges in California after telling officers he was headed to a gay pride event was charged Wednesday in Indiana with child molestation — allegations that apparently spurred his cross-country journey to Los Angeles, a prosecutor said. James Wesley Howell, 20, faces one count of child molesting in southern Indiana's Clark County. If convicted, the Jeffersonville, Indiana, man could face up to 16 years in prison. Clark County Prosecutor Jeremy Mull told The Associated Press that Howell took a 12-year-old girl to a state forestry property May 31 and had sex with her. Mull said Howell met the girl through an adult friend.

Teens killed by mother's ex-boyfriend in Panorama City ID'd Two teenage girls who police say were shot and killed by their mother's ex-boyfriend in Panorama City over the weekend have been identified, authorities said Wednesday. Stephanie Gonzalez, 17, and her sister Kimberly Gonzalez, 13, both from Panorama City, were fatally shot Saturday night, according to Ed Winter of the Los?Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. Each died from a gunshot wound to the chest, Winter said. Stephanie had been a student at Panorama High School, while Kimberly just completed seventh grade at Vista Middle School in Panorama City, according to Los?Angeles police and a school official. Kimberly Gonzalez was “a warm and caring student” who had a lot of friends at the school, said Joe Nardulli, principal of Vista Middle School.

Homeless Man Charged With Murder For Westlake Fire That Killed 5
A 21-year-old homeless man was charged with capital murder on Wednesday for allegedly setting a fire in a Westlake district building that killed five people, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office said. Prosecutors are asking that Johnny Josue Sanchez be held without bail. They say he set the fire Monday night in a vacant commercial building at 2411 W. Eighth St. after getting into a dispute with other transients at the site. It took 147 firefighters more than two hours to attack the flames at the vacant 14,351 square-foot building, which did not have working sprinklers, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. Firefighters rescued several people from the building, including Sanchez, and transported them to a local hospital.

Parties, fights and trash fires: Signs of trouble seen weeks before arson at Westlake apartment
For weeks, Westlake neighbors complained about the green, two-story building along West 8th Street, empty except for the squatters who had moved inside. Neighbors heard loud music and parties, and people fighting and throwing bottles. Firefighters doused a series of trash fires in an adjacent alley. They alerted the property manager, in hopes of getting the building boarded up and broken locks fixed to keep people out. Those efforts came to a tragic end Monday evening, when flames broke out inside the building in what would become the city's deadliest structure fire this year. Five people were killed, some of their bodies so badly burned that it could take days to identify them.

Rape Victim Publicly Discusses Ordeal Hoping To Help Others: ‘My Character Has Been Attacked'
A rape victim spoke out Wednesday hoping to help other young women with her story. “My character has been attacked and I have been further victimized,” said Shelby Pfeffer, who was intoxicated when she was raped. She made it clear she wanted to talk about her ordeal and wanted to do so on-camera. “And I have gathered every ounce of strength I had in me to fight, not only for myself, but for other young women as well,” she said. The man convicted in her attack was Scott Bennett, 51, from Los Angeles. Bennett is a musician who was touring with the Brian Wilson band at the Hard Rock Hotel in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Pot shop robber shot in foot by security guard
A man who was possibly attempting to rob a downtown Los Angeles marijuana dispensary Wednesday was shot in the foot by a security guard, police reported. The shooting was reported about 2:30 p.m. in the area of 12th and Main Streets, according to Sgt. Aloaf Walker of the Los Angeles Police Department's Central Station. “It appeared to be an attempted robbery at the location,” he said. The unidentified man was taken to a hospital for treatment of a non-life- threatening gunshot wound, Walker said.

Socal Native, Kentucky State University Football Player Shot To Death In Inglewood
Authorities are looking for a suspect who shot and killed an Inglewood resident and Kentucky State University football player Tuesday afternoon. Around 5:30 p.m., police responded to the 7900 block of S. Van Ness Street on reports of a shooting victim. When they arrived, they found a man suffering from a single gunshot wound to his upper body. He was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. The man was later identified as 24-year-old Joshua Williams. The athlete attended Oregon State University from 2011 until 2013 then transferred to KSU for the 2014-2015 year. It was unclear what led to the shooting, but neighbors in the area said they heard several shots and people running away from the scene.

Reward Offered to Find Man Sought in Deadly Arson
Police issued a $5,000 reward Wednesday for information leading to a suspect in an arson that killed a man in Seal Beach in April. Police were searching for Eric Jesus Andrade, whom they said was wanted for questioning in an April arson that killed John Donnelly, 67. He's described as standing about 5 foot 9 inches and weighing about 160 pounds and has brown eyes, brown hair and a tattoo circling his right elbow. Donnelly and his dog were found dead April 30 in an apartment in Seal Beach on April 30.

FBI using DNA testing in hopes of finding 'Original Night Stalker' serial killer
On March 13, 1980, the city of Ventura was rocked by a double murder. Someone entered the home of Charlene and Lyman Smith and bludgeoned the couple to death. They were found by their 12 year-old-son. The killer was never found. Whether it's the Ventura murders of Charlene and Lyman Smith, or dozens of other California murders, rapes and burglaries, the FBI is turning the Internet into a dragnet to catch a guy who is now somewhere between 60 to 75-years-old. A suspect, connected by DNA, is believed to have committed 12 cold case murders, 45 unsolved rapes and dozens of burglaries including what happened at the Ventura home of Charlene and Lyman Smith.

Owner of Maywood metal recycling facility faced charges for dumping waste before massive blaze
The owner of a recycling facility that has been burning for more than 30 hours at an industrial park in Maywood was recently charged with multiple felonies for improperly storing and disposing hazardous materials at his site, according to court records. Da Xiong Pan, who also goes by Daniel Pan, pleaded not guilty in May to five felony charges. Among those charges was that he knowingly disposed of treated and stored hazardous waste without a permit at his site, Panda International Trading Co., at 3570 Fruitland Ave., according to a Los Angeles County Superior Court criminal complaint.

Oakland's new Police Chief Fairow removed from job
Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf abruptly fired interim Police Chief Ben Fairow on Wednesday, six days after hiring him to replace a chief who resigned amid a sexual misconduct scandal in the department. Schaaf said she removed Fairow from the top post after she “received information that has caused me to lose confidence in Ben Fairow's ability to lead the Oakland Police Department at this particular moment in time.” She said it was a mistake to install him. “I own the mistake I made, and the important thing is I'm fixing it. I'm fixing it quickly, and I'm not trying to hide,” the mayor said at a news conference Wednesday afternoon.

Fighting opiate abuse: Lawmakers, families demand action
In the deadly world of opioid overdoses, fentanyl is only the latest high-profile killer. Opioid abuse cuts across all demographics, from celebrities such as Prince, whose recent death was confirmed as an “accidental” fentanyl overdose, to victims in upscale El Dorado Hills neighborhoods and worn south Sacramento streets. Calling it a public health epidemic, legislators, law enforcement, health officials and families here and across the country are ramping up new efforts to combat opiate addiction and deaths, including those attributed to fentanyl. This week, a state Assembly committee voted 16-0 to approve a bill that would require doctors to check California's prescription drug database before prescribing certain addictive drugs. The bill, SB 482 by state Sen. Ricardo Lara, D-Bell Gardens, is expected to be heard before the full Assembly in late August.

‘San Diego You Are Next' Says Craigslist Post Being Investigated by Police San Diego police are investigating an ominous post reported on Craigslist that referred to the massacre at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Fla., and warned that “San Diego you are next.”KGTV-TV reported Tuesday night that a viewer had brought the item, posted in the “men seeking men” section of the free ad website, to the station's attention. The post, which has since been removed, featured a photo a handgun firing a bullet with the title “We need more Orlando's [sic]”. It went on to say “Orlando was long overdue. Cleanse your community of the filth that gives decent gay men and women a bad name. Those people were walking diseases, bug chasers, and thank god for AIDS and 9-11 and now Orlando. San Diego you are next…”

Why AR-15 style weapons are used in mass shootings
The rifle used in the attack that killed 49 people and wounded 53 others in Orlando wasn't an AR-15, but it shared characteristics with the guns used in mass shootings such as those in Newtown, Connecticut; Aurora, Colorado; and San Bernardino. Those characteristics make it a natural fit for someone trying to kill as many people as possible, weapons experts say. “It's a morbid topic, but these guys are going to pick the weapon system that allows them to shoot as many times as they can, a carbine semiautomatic rifle that has good accuracy, that's stable, that has a lot of magazine capacity,” said Lt. Col. Scott Mann (retired), a former Green Beret and author of ‘Game Changers: Going Local to Defeat Violent Extremists.' “An assault rifle or semiautomatic is typically what they're going to choose, because these guys are going in to kill a lot of people.”

Orlando Gunman Apparently Searched Facebook During Attack
While his victims texted heartbreaking last words to loved ones from the blood-drenched bathrooms, Omar Mateen apparently went on Facebook to measure the shockwaves his attack on a gay nightclub was generating. He searched for the terms "Pulse Orlando" and "Shooting," according to a letter released by a Senate committee. The letter detailing Mateen's Facebook posts and searches in the final hours of his life came to light as grief-stricken Orlando prepared to bury the first of the 49 dead and awaited a visit Thursday from President Barack Obama, who planned to meet with victims' families and first responders and offer words of solace.

The father of a Cal State Long Beach student who was gunned down during the November terrorist attacks in Paris filed a lawsuit against Twitter, Facebook and Google, alleging the social media sites have allowed terror groups to use their technology to spread propaganda and recruit members. Nohemi Gonzalez, 23, of El Monte, was the only American killed in the November shootings that left 130 people dead. Gonzalez, a CSULB senior majoring in industrial design, was one of 17 students attending Strate College of Design in Paris as part of a semester-abroad program. She was killed while eating with friends at a popular bistro in Paris called La Belle Equipe.

Half of Maywood Fire Evacuees May Not Be Allowed to Return to Homes Yet
About half of the 300 residents displaced by an explosive warehouse fire southeast of downtown Los Angeles might have to remain evacuated from their homes while crews ensure there are no lingering health risks, authorities said on Thursday. While many of the evacuees affected by the blaze were allowed to return home Wednesday night, several returned to the evacuation site due to a foul smell at their residence. About 150 residents remain evacuated, Lt. Alex Salinas of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's East Los Angeles Division told City News Service.

Man Accused in Racially-Charged Council Arrest Sues for 'False Arrest'
A City Hall gadfly who was arrested after submitting a comment card containing Ku Klux Klan imagery during a meeting chaired by a black councilman said Wednesday he has filed two claims against the city alleging $775,000 in damages. Wayne Spindler, 46, said accusations by public officials and others that he is racist has "destroyed" his life and hurt his business as an immigration attorney."They branded me a racist and scared the hell out of the judges and clients," Spindler told City News Service, adding that he is "an emotional wreck" and unable to get more than three hours of sleep each night.

Gov. Brown won't declare homelessness crisis an emergency
In a blow to Los Angeles officials grappling with the county's growing homeless population, Gov. Jerry Brown said Wednesday he will not declare a state of emergency on California's homeless crisis. "A gubernatorial declaration is not appropriate," Debra Hoffman, the governor's deputy press secretary said in an email to KPCC. "We recognize the importance of addressing homelessness in our cities and will continue to support local governments, which remain best positioned to tackle challenges like this and tailor solutions to the needs of their communities."

California Democrats win safety net gains in state budget
California lawmakers approved a state budget Wednesday that gives liberal Democrats long-sought increases to safety net programs while socking away billions to prepare for a recession. The $122.5 billion spending plan, negotiated by Democratic Gov. Jerry Brown and Democratic legislative leaders, earned a rebuke from Republicans, who said it sets the state on course for deficits and fails to provide money to fix California's crumbling roads. The budget was approved nearly along party lines, with all Democrats and just one Senate Republican — Anthony Cannella of Ceres — in favor.
