LAPD motorcycle officer injured by suspected DUI driver in Van Nuys
A female Los Angeles police motorcycle officer was injured Wednesday morning in a Van Nuys collision involving a motorist suspected of driving under the influence of drugs, authorities said. The accident happened at 9:30 a.m. near Victory Boulevard and Fulton Avenue, LAPD Officer Jane Kim said. “The driver was speeding west on Victory (Boulevard) in the number three lane approaching Fulton (Avenue) and the officer started to follow her,” Kim said. “The suspect changed to the number two lane and then switched back to the number three lane and clipped the officer.”

Sheriff's union defends police ‘militarization' after Orlando shooting
The Kevlar helmet that saved an Orlando SWAT officer from a gunshot wound during the nightclub massacre this month is proof of why police need sophisticated equipment, say local unions representing law enforcement agencies. The issue was raised Wednesday after George Hofstetter, president of the Association for Los Angeles Deputy Sheriffs released a statement saying the mass shooting inside the Pulse nightclub could have been worse if police hadn't been equipped with powerful weapons and tactical gear,— military equipment that critics say should not be used by local law enforcement. But all the equipment and training means nothing if there aren't enough police officers, noted Craig Lally, president of the Los Angeles Police Protective League. “The Los Angeles Police Department is a well-equipped and well-trained police force,” Lally said in a statement. “However, all the equipment and training in the world cannot help if we do not have enough officers to mount an effective response.”

Man Killed in Drive-By Shooting in San Pedro; Gunman Sought
A man walking down a street in San Pedro early Thursday morning was killed in a drive-by shooting. Authorities were called to the intersection of South Palos Verdes Street and West 9th Street at about 2 a.m., said Officer Ammons with the Los Angeles Police Department. A man believed to be in his 20s was walking in the area when a maroon vehicle drove up to him and someone opened fire, said Capt. Michael Oreb with the Police Department. The victim tried to run from the scene, but eventually collapsed and died, Oreb said. The vehicle fled from the scene and no description of the gunman was immediately available.

Suspect sought who tried to sexually assault 80-year-old woman Police today asked for the public's help in identifying a man suspected of severely beating and attempting to sexually assault an 80-year-old woman in her Hollywood apartment. The attacker entered the victim's retirement complex near Hollywood Boulevard and Ivar Avenue in the early morning hours last Saturday, took an elevator to an upper floor and knocked on the victim's door, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. When the woman opened her door, the man pushed his way in, attempted to sexually assault her, severely beat her and then fled, police said. The victim was taken to a hospital with unspecified injuries. The suspect is described as a black man between 25 and 30 years old, about 6 feet tall, weighing about 220 pounds with black hair and brown eyes.

$59M Plan To Outfit LAPD Officers With Body Cameras Approved
The Los Angeles City Council signed off Wednesday on a $59 million plan to equip Los Angeles Police Department officers with body cameras and cellphones. The council voted to move ahead with a contract to purchase about 7,000 body cameras and also Sprint cellphones that officers can use to review and manage the video footage. “Transparency is key in this,” said Mitch Englander, a Los Angeles City council member. “It's a big contract, it's a big technology movement, it's a paradigm shift in the way that we police our city.” The plan includes a contract with Arizona-based Taser International to provide the cameras along with equipment upgrades and video storage, plus 4,400 stun guns.

Nebron said Lash forced her to live in a downstairs bathroom and convinced her he was an ultra-secret agent. Hit-and-Run Driver Sought in Fatal Bicyclist Crash
Police were searching for a hit-and-run driver Wednesday after a bicyclist was struck by two vehicles and killed in Beverly Grove. The collisions were reported around 9 p.m. Tuesday in the 100 block of N. Crescent Heights Boulevard, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. The bicyclist, who was thrown about 75 feet due to the impact, was traveling on First Street when he was struck by the vehicle at the intersection with Crescent Heights Boulevard. "Had he stopped at the scene, officers probably would have responded and spoke to the driver and, possibly, even have released him from the scene," said Olin Osborne, an investigator with the Los Angeles Police Department West Traffic Division. "But because she left the scene, that's considered a felony hit and run."

LAX-Bound Flight Diverted to Tucson Under F-16 Escort After Disturbance on Board Aircraft
A flight from San Antonio bound for Los Angeles International Airport had to be diverted to Tucson, Arizona, Wednesday after a "disturbance" on board the airliner, according to LAX spokeswoman Katherine Alvardo. Delta Airlines flight 5720 was en route to Los Angeles when a man on board the flight became uncooperative, according to passenger Ryan Healy. "We've got a situation for sure. Guy won't sit down. FA's trying to intervene. Guy is uncooperative," Healy tweeted during the flight. As the plane, operated by Compass Airlines, diverted to Tucson International Airport, Healy took pictures of two fighter jets who arrived to escort the plane to the airport.

Man Shot To Death In Westmont; Investigation Underway
Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department homicide detectives are investigating the shooting death of a man in Westmont. Authorities responded to the 1400 block of W. 102nd Street on reports of a shooting around 9:21 p.m. Tuesday. When authorities arrived, they found a male shooting victim. During the preliminary investigation, detectives learned the victim was walking westbound on the street when a suspect exited a white SUV parked along the curb. The suspect pulled out a handgun and began firing. The suspect then got back into the car and drove away, heading westbound down the road. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police ask for public's help to find missing teen last seen in Van Nuys
Police Wednesday asked for the public's help in the search for a 16-year-old girl who was last seen leaving a group home in Van Nuys a week ago. Jeida Moore was last seen around 10:30 p.m. June 15 leaving a residence in the 14500 block of Sylvan Street, near Van Nuys Boulevard, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. Jeida is from Alabama and does not have any family in California, police said. She is described as black, about 5 feet 4 inches tall, weighing about 165 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes. She was last seen wearing a silver bow headband, a long-sleeved black shirt, black pants and green shoes and carrying a green cinched backpack.

A process server crashed Hall's June 7 election night party in San Pedro to serve him with a subpoena to appear as a witness in a civil dispute between a Compton housing development and a group of tenants who claim they have been harassed by the owners. Uber Driver Arrested After Allegedly Robbing Passenger
A 35-year-old Uber driver suspected of threatening to hit one of his passengers with a rock, then stealing his iPhone was arrested Tuesday in Inglewood. The victim told police Saturday afternoon that Medhanie Meshesha had been his Uber driver on Friday, and that when he arrived at his first destination, he realized he had left the phone in the car. The victim said he called Meshesha back and had him pick him up to take him home, police said. After the victim received his phone, he offered Meshesha a tip for returning it, but the driver refused, saying he wanted more, police said.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office will as a judge Thursday to order the release of a 42-year-old convicted murderer on his own recognizance while officials complete an investigation. New evidence appears to raise doubts about Raymond Lee Jennings' conviction for the shooting death of Antelope Valley College student Michelle O'Keefe, 18, at a Palmdale park-and-ride lot where he worked as a security guard, according to the district attorney's office. O'Keefe was shot four times after she returned to her blue Ford Mustang, which she left at the park-and-ride lot so she could carpool with a friend to a Kid Rock video shoot in Los Angeles where they worked as paid extras.

Jeff Rosen introduces bill to send 'next Brock Turner' to prison In response to a public outcry over the light sentence given to a former Stanford student-athlete convicted of sexual assault, Santa Clara County District Attorney Jeff Rosen Wednesday unveiled legislation that would toughen penalties for sexually assaulting an unconscious person -- a crime that can now result in probation instead of prison. The announcement came on the same day a new online poll showed strong support for recalling the judge who sentenced Brock Turner to county jail. Currently, Rosen said at a news conference outside the Palo Alto courthouse where Turner's trial was held, a prison sentence of three to eight years is mandatory for the rape or sexual assault of a conscious person by force. Sexually assaulting an unconscious person, he said, should not be treated less seriously.

‘Cluster Bomb' Dropped Off at Military Store in Newhall: Sheriff's Department
A “cluster bomb” that was dropped off for disposal at a Newhall business prompted a bomb squad response Wednesday afternoon. Deputies were called to an army supply store at Eight and Main streets just after 1 p.m. for a suspicious device at the business, said Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Sgt. Price of the Santa Clarita Valley Station. The device was dropped for disposal at the business, and the Newhall Community Center was evacuated, the station said on Twitter. Commando Military Surplus is near the location where the device was dropped.

Feds charge 300 in Medicare fraud crackdown
Hundreds of doctors, pharmacists and nurses — including two dozen medical professionals across San Diego and southern California — have been charged in a massive federal law enforcement crackdown on health care fraud that the Justice Department said Wednesday cost the government $900 million. Federal officials said more than 300 people nationwide have been charged in the sweep, the largest takedown ever by a Medicare fraud task force of federal, state and local law enforcement agencies. The defendants face a wide arrays of charges, including conspiracy to commit health care fraud, money laundering, mail fraud and violations of federal anti-kickback laws.

Spike in LGBT gun club membership since Orlando mass shooting
In the wake of the Orlando massacre, an Atlanta LGBT gun club, the “Pink Pistols” have become more active in their self-defense fight. Dylan West said their Atlanta membership has doubled since the mass shooting at Pulse Nightclub on June 12. West said while the Orlando shooting has drawn attention to attacks on the LGBT community, anti-gay violence is not new. “We look decades back, there have been arson attacks as far as one on one attacks,” said West. “In 2014 The FBI reported 999 hate crimes against the LGBT community.”
