Officers Grief-Stricken After Police Dog Killed in Standoff
After a police K-9 was fatally shot and a man was killed during a SWAT standoff in Long Beach on Tuesday, police honored Credo the K-9 in an emotional salute. A SWAT team had been locked in a standoff in the 2800 block of East 15th Street with a man wanted in connection with a shooting case involving multiple victims, the Long Beach Police Department said. The investigation began about 9 a.m. Officers said the man aggressively charged at the officers, and intermediate force options were deployed, including a 40mm rubber baton round and a police service dog attached to a special weapons team.

4 Correctional Officers Injured in Inmate Attacks at LA County Prison
Four correctional officers were injured Tuesday during inmate attacks at the California State Prison-Los Angeles County. The incident took place about 8:20 a.m., when inmate Daniel Camp, 51, allegedly left his prison cell and attacked two officers who were escorting his cellmate, Antoine LeBlanc, 29, back to the cell, according to Lt. Duane Bennett. One officer used pepper spray to stop the attack, Bennett said, but LeBlanc forced an officer over the stair railing and the officer fell one story. As the other officer attempted to subdue LeBlanc, both fell down the stairs.

Man Charged In Shootout That Injured 2 LASD Deputies In Bellflower
The man who allegedly shot and wounded two Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies in Bellflower after fleeing a DUI checkpoint was charged Tuesday with 13 felony counts in connection with the incident. Juan Manuel Martinez, 39, was arrested Friday morning at a home in the 9000 block of Mayne Street after entering the residence and holding a man hostage. The hostage escaped. The arrest came after Martinez allegedly engaged deputies in three separate gun battles Thursday night. The first shootout occurred when a motorcycle deputy pulled Martinez over after he drove through a routine DUI checkpoint.

2 Suspects In Custody After Leading Officers On High-Speed Pursuit Along 5 Freeway
Officers took two suspects into custody near Griffith Park Tuesday following a high-speed pursuit along the southbound 5 Freeway. The pursuit began near Santa Clarita at around 2:30 p.m. as California Highway Patrol officers received a report of a possible stolen vehicle. Officers chased the white pickup truck along the 5 Freeway at speeds approaching 100 mph. The suspects' vehicle hit an SUV as they were exiting the freeway in the Griffith Park area. The LA Fire Department was on scene assisting an elderly woman who appeared to be in the SUV at the time of the crash.

LAX Increases Security After Istanbul Airport Terror Attack
Los Angeles International Airport has stepped up security following the deadly terrorist attack in Turkey that left at least 41 people dead. While the Federal Aviation Administration issued a temporary ground stop for all U.S. flights Tuesday night, there were no delays at LAX and no threats. The stop was lifted by early Wednesday morning. A stronger police presence will be at the airport until further notice. Authorities want to remind travelers to be aware of their surroundings and if you see something, say something.

Pedestrian Killed In Pico Rivera Hit-And-Run Crash; Driver Sought The search is on for the driver responsible in a hit-and-run crash that killed a pedestrian in Pico Rivera. The incident occurred shortly before 4:30 a.m. Tuesday near Whittier Boulevard and Lindsey Avenue. According to deputies, a driver in a dark-colored, mid-size truck struck and killed a person crossing the street, then kept going Investigators said they don't know if the victim was in a crosswalk at the time of the crash. The victim's identity was withheld, pending notification of relatives. Officials believed the woman may have been homeless.

Who stole $250K worth of sportswear in Van Nuys?
Investigators sought the public's help Tuesday to make arrests in the burglary of a warehouse in Van Nuys where sportswear valued at $250,000 was stolen. The burglary occurred between 5 p.m. March 22 and 9:50 a.m. March 23, when unknown suspects pried open the roll up door of a warehouse in the 7900 block of Ruffner Avenue, near Van Nuys Airport, according to the Los Angeles Police Department's Commercial Crimes Division Cargo-Hijack Unit. The thieves took about 112 boxes of Kutting Weight brand sportswear, authorities said. Kutting Weight sportswear is not sold at retail stores.

LA County coroner's office lieutenant pleads no contest to harassment
A 46-year-old man who has worked for the Los Angeles County coroner's office for nearly 10 years and was accused by a co-worker of sending her obscene images pleaded no contest Monday to three counts of harassment by phone or other electronic communications. Coroner's Lt. Ryan Hays was immediately sentenced to three months summary probation on the misdemeanor counts. The judge also issued a stay-away order requiring Hays to keep at least 100 yards away from the co-worker.

O.C. deputies didn't search construction workers, instructors before jailbreak, violating policy
Sheriff's deputies failed to search construction workers and school instructors working inside Orange County Jail prior to the Jan. 22 escape of three dangerous inmates. A sheriff's commander also told county officials Tuesday that jailers did nothing to inventory potentially dangerous or useful tools being carried into the jail, or to make sure that the tools left with workers, even after sharp cutting blades were left behind on two occasions near inmate housing areas prior to the escape. The failure to search workers going into the jail violated department policy.

Bills to mandate prison for sexually assaulting unconscious victims, redefine rape clear committee
Politicians are often criticized for rushing to change laws after high-profile crimes because they can wind up creating bad public policy with messy, unintended consequences. But national outrage over the light punishment former student-athlete Brock Turner recently received for sexually assaulting an unconscious woman last year outside a Stanford frat party revealed an inconsistency that took California lawmakers by surprise: Sexually assaulting a conscious person is considered a more severe crime in the Golden State than attacking an unconscious person. On Tuesday, the Senate Public Safety Committee unanimously moved to eliminate that seeming absurdity.

Manson murderer's 'disturbingly distorted' views should prevent her release from prison, D.A. says
The Los Angeles County district attorney has asked Gov. Jerry Brown to deny parole for former Manson “family” member Leslie Van Houten, who was convicted along with other members of the cult in the 1969 killings of Leno and Rosemary LaBianca. In a letter dated Friday, Dist. Atty. Jackie Lacey told the governor that she “strongly” opposed releasing Van Houten, calling her unsuitable for parole and a threat to public safety. Van Houten, 66, had been denied parole 19 times since being convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison, but a two-member review board in April recommended her release. Lacey said Van Houten continued to maintain “a disturbingly distorted view of Charles Manson.”

Police transparency reaches a stalemate at the Capitol
California lawmakers have reached a stalemate over how much the public should know about the official activities of police officers. All but one of the major pieces of legislation introduced this year to either increase access to police disciplinary records and body camera footage or further restrict disclosure are now dead after a state Senate committee killed two bills Tuesday that would have given officers greater control over the handling of body camera videos.

Mexican Drug Lord ‘El Chapo' Files Appeals Against Extradition To United States
Lawyers for Mexican drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman said Tuesday they have filed two appeals against his extradition to the United States. Lawyer Jose Refugio Rodriguez said the appeals argue the statute of limitations has run out on some crimes Guzman is accused of in the United States. The defense also argues that some of the accusations against Guzman are based on hearsay, not direct evidence. Rodriguez said the appeals were filed late Monday in courts in Mexico City. He predicted it could take as long as three years to resolve the appeals.

Istanbul terror attack: 41 killed; airport resumes flights amid blood, shattered glass As passengers at Istanbul's Ataturk Airport waited to board their flights Wednesday, workers picked up shattered glass and washed away blood that was barely dry. Turkey's Prime Minister declared a national day of mourning, one day after three terrorists attacked the arrivals hall and a nearby parking area with gunfire and explosive devices, killing 41 people. Of the 239 people injured, 109 remained hospitalized Wednesday, official said. At least 13 of those killed were foreign nationals, a Turkish official said. They include five Saudis, two Iraqis, one Tunisian, one Chinese, one Iranian, one Ukrainian, one Jordanian and one person from Uzbekistan, the official said. Three of the foreigners had dual Turkish citizenship.

LA City Council Moves Toward Placing $1.2 Billion Bond Measure To Address Homelessness On Ballot
The Los Angeles City Council took a step Tuesday toward placing a bond measure on the November ballot to raise money to address the city's homelessness problem, and will also vote later this week on an alternate parcel tax measure. The council voted 14-0 to approve a resolution stating that it is necessary for the city to propose issuing a bond , part of a two-step process. The panel is expected to take another vote tomorrow on the bond measure language and placing it on the ballot.

California Voters To Decide Whether To Legalize Recreational Marijuana
California voters will decide whether to legalize recreational marijuana after Secretary of State Alex Padilla said Tuesday that initiative proponents turned in more than enough signatures to place the question on the November ballot. A successful vote in California would mean one in every six Americans lives in a state with legal marijuana sales, including the entire West Coast. The initiative is promoted by a well-funded and politically connected coalition spearheaded by former Facebook President Sean Parker.
