At least 5 Dallas police officers killed, 7 more wounded in protest shooting
Five Dallas police officers were killed and seven wounded in a coordinated sniper attack during an anti-police brutality protest Thursday, an explosion of violence that President Obama declared a “vicious, calculated and despicable attack on law enforcement.” Three people were in custody and one suspect dead as local police and federal authorities raced to determine a motive and whether more people were involved in what was the nation's deadliest day for police since 9/11. The suspects were not cooperating, officials said. Law enforcement veterans told Fox News the attack was clearly coordinated and showed an alarming degree of planning and sophistication.

Suspect who died in standoff with Dallas police was killed by bomb that authorities detonated
A suspect who died after a standoff with Dallas police said he wanted to kill white people -- especially white officers -- and that he was upset about "the recent police shootings," and that he acted alone, Dallas Police Chief David Brown told reporters Friday.The suspect eventually was killed by a bomb that authorities detonated, Brown said. "We saw no other option but to use our bomb robot and place a device on its extension for it to detonate where the suspect was," Brown said. "Other options would have exposed our officers to grave danger. The suspect is deceased as a result of detonating the bomb."

DART Officer Killed During Dallas Protest Was Married Just 2 Weeks Ago
A Dallas Area Rapid Transit agency officer killed Thursday night when multiple gunmen opened fire during a protest in downtown Dallas had gotten married just two weeks ago, the agency's chief said Friday. DART officer Brent Thompson was confirmed to be one of the fatalities in the Dallas police shootings in which 11 officers were shot during protests against police use of excessive force. Brent Thompson, 43, was one of five officers killed in the deadliest day for U.S. law enforcement since 9/11, CNN reported. Six more officers were hospitalized after being wounded in the attack, authorities said. Thompson married a fellow transit officer two weeks ago, DART Police Chief James Spiller told CNN's “New Day.”

Chief Beck To Make ‘Significant Remarks' On Dallas Killings During Recruit Graduation
Los Angeles police Chief Charlie Beck will make what the department is calling “significant remarks” about the shootings in Dallas during the Recruit Officer Graduation Ceremony Friday. During the recruit graduation, officers will wear mourning bands in honor of the slain officers. The LAPD continues to closely monitor the situation in Dallas. At this time, the department has not been placed on a tactical alert. The motive for the shooting remains under investigation.

CBS2's Rachel Kim spoke to a former San Bernardino Police officer who offered advice to a scared public on exactly how to act if pulled over. After Thursday night's violence in Dallas — where two snipers gunned down at least four police officers — they are also on edge. As an officer with the San Bernardino Police Department for 23 years, Johnny Turner has made his share of traffic stops. He's now retired but after hearing about what happened in Minnesota, he wants to let people know what you should and shouldn't do when you are pulled over.

7 Latino Gang Members Charged in Boyle Heights Firebombing of Black Families
A federal grand jury has indicted seven Latino gang members in connection with a 2014 firebombing attack at the Ramona Gardens housing project in Boyle Heights, accusing them of trying to drive black residents out of the neighborhood, prosecutors announced Thursday. Federal prosecutors allege that the men – all described as members of the Big Hazard street gang – met before the attack, where Carlos Hernandez, 31, is accused of telling the group they were going to use Molotov cocktails to firebomb homes where black families lived.

Man Who Threatened Family With Hatchet In Custody After 8-Hour Standoff
A man barricaded in a North Hollywood home who police say was threatening his family with a hatchet while inhaling fumes from a can was in custody Thursday after an 8-hour standoff with police. “It took a long time to negotiate with him to finally give himself up,” Los Angeles police Sgt. Anthony Verret said. The standoff began about 5:55 p.m. Wednesday, when officers were dispatched to a home in the 11300 block of Miranda Street in response to a burglary call, Verret said. “When officers arrived, they realized that there was a relationship between the suspect and the family,” he said. “He was inhaling some chemical, some fumes, from some can.”

Man Detained in Connection With West LA Sexual Assaults
Police have detained a man who may be a suspect in the sexual assault of two women in West Los Angeles. Officers responded to Olympic Boulevard and Stoner Avenue around noon on Thursday, after someone spotted the man and called police. The sexual assaults happened over the Fourth of July weekend. Police say a man grabbed a woman walking home in the 1400 block of South Westgate Avenue earlier Saturday, dragged her across the street to a dark path and sexually assaulted her. They say a similar attack by the same suspect happened Monday afternoon in the 1900 block of Westgate Avenue.

Former Church Director Charged With Sexual Assault; Additional Victims Sought
Authorities were seeking additional possible victims of a former church youth director charged with sexually assaulting a 14-year- old girl in Buena Park. Edmundo Nevarez, 44, of Pico Rivera pleaded not guilty on Thursday to two felony counts of lewd acts upon a child and one misdemeanor count of child annoyance, according to the Orange County District Attorney's Office. Nevarez also faces a sentencing enhancement for substantial sexual conduct with a child. If convicted, Nevarez faces a maximum sentence of three years and eight months in state prison and mandatory lifetime sex offender registration, prosecutors said.

Millions in High-End Watches, Jewelry Stolen From Southland Stores In Crime Ring
Authorities are investigating a series of high-end watch and jewelry store robberies that are part of a crime ring in which the suspects have struck nearly a dozen stores in the Southland. The robberies occurred twice in Canoga Park and once in Century City , Mission Viejo , Woodland Hills, Thousand Oaks, West Hollywood, Torrance, Malibu and Santa Monica. Authorities said millions of dollars worth of jewelry and watches were stolen from each location. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of one of nine suspects connected to the ring.

Was California's violent crime hike anomalous or end of decline? Recently released crime statistics compiled by the California attorney general's office show that violent crime in the state increased by more than 10 percent in 2015. It was a similar situation in the four-county Sacramento region, where violent crime – defined in the data as homicides, forcible rapes, robberies and aggravated assaults – increased by about 9.4 percent last year. Some agencies' increases exceeded the state average while others trailed it. The state-compiled report offered no explanation for the jump from 2014, which came amid a solid economy and follows two years of falling violent crime numbers, part of a steady decline since the mid-1990s. The increases were not confined to particular parts of the state or to cities, unincorporated areas or other types of jurisdictions.

California prosecutors come out swinging against pot legalization Opponents of a fall ballot measure to legalize recreational marijuana grew Thursday when leading county prosecutors came out against Proposition 64. The California District Attorneys Association's board of directors, by a unanimous vote, has moved to formalize their well-known distaste for legitimizing the drug. They join the California Police Chiefs Association as major law enforcement opponents of legalization. Mark Zahner, the district attorneys group's chief executive, said the Nov. 8 measure “does nothing to help us keep dangerously impaired drivers from getting behind the wheel and injuring or killing innocent Californians.” Zahner said the measure also allows drug dealers to “infiltrate” the newly created marijuana industry, referring to a provision that permits people with certain drug felony convictions to apply for a license. And he added that it would weaken current regulations governing medical marijuana.

Another LA councilman gets restraining order over alleged City Hall threats
Amid heightened tensions between members of the Los?Angeles City Council and a contingent of rowdy public speakers, Councilman Mitch O'Farrell is claiming his personal safety is in danger. O'Farrell, whose district includes Hollywood, Echo?Park and Atwater?Village, obtained a temporary restraining order against Michael Hunt on June?21, court records show. A hearing today is scheduled at Los?Angeles Superior Court. A well-known City?Hall gadfly, Hunt is barred from coming within 50?feet of the councilman in the hallways of City?Hall, the order states. Hunt must also stay 10?yards away from O'Farrell's Echo?Park field office. The order doesn't bar Hunt from attending City?Hall meetings. O'Farrell claims in court documents that Hunt, 53, harassed him at City?Hall on June?15.

How safe is your voter information?
Questions about the security and integrity of California voter information have surfaced after a Southern California district attorney described online tampering incidents in which residents' party registration was changed without their knowledge. On Wednesday, Riverside County District Attorney Mike Hestrin said a preliminary investigation revealed that party affiliations were changed without voters' knowledge or consent. Whoever did it had access to their private information, such as Social Security numbers, he said. Because the state website didn't retain IP addresses — digital fingerprints showing a computer's location — the trail has gone cold and there are no suspects, Hestrin said.
