President Obama asked us to learn from each other and to share what is working in Los Angeles.''

Police Officer's Wife Writes Heartfelt Post About Race, Gets Presidential Invitation
“Let me tell you a little about who lives  behind  this badge, because he would never share this about himself,” wrote Brianna Battles about her husband Jared. “He was raised by his interracial grandparents and his single mother. He shakes his head with disgust and anger when a fellow officer, who was sworn to serve and protect, shames and brings dishonor to an entire profession.” Battles also wrote: “In a time of anger, division and hate, please remember this, his life matters because he leaves us everyday to  protect  yours.”

City Hall protesters want LAPD Chief Charlie Beck fired A group of protesters calling for the ouster of police Chief Charlie Beck and demanding a meeting with Mayor Eric Garcetti gathered again in front of City Hall today, continuing a sit-in that began after the Police Commission determined an officer's fatal shooting of a 30-year-old black woman was within department policy. Beck told reporters earlier he believes the city has made progress in improving relationships. “I think that we have successes to share in Los Angeles,” "I think we've made a lot of progress on that regardless of what you see from a handful of people.”

Search for gunman yields assault victim instead at Van Ness Elementary
Police converged on the neighborhood around Van Ness Avenue Elementary on Wednesday afternoon thinking they were looking for a gunman and found instead a school employee who was the victim of an assault on the campus. By about 1:45 p.m., Gayle Pollard-Terry, an L.A. Unified spokeswoman, reported that students at the campus, which is open for summer school, were safe.  But instead of standing down, a row of marked and unmarked police cruisers from both departments began to line the curb up and down the street in front of the school and filled spaces across the street as well.

California court widens scope of restraining orders
An Alameda County woman asked the courts in 2013 to extend a stay-away order against her abusive ex-boyfriend, saying he had harassed and threatened her by phone and had beaten her children after the order was issued.  The woman's testimony “established a reasonable apprehension of future abuse,” which includes verbal as well as physical attacks, the First District Court of Appeal in San Francisco said in a ruling that was published Monday as a precedent for future cases. In addition, the court said, “abuse is not limited to the protected party seeking the order” — in other words, an attack on children can justify an order keeping the attacker away from their parent.

Should felons be allowed to vote from behind bars?
Thousands of felons serving time in county jails would be allowed to vote in California elections from behind bars under a bill moving swiftly through the state Legislature despite widespread opposition from law enforcement officials. Assemblywoman Shirley Weber (D-San Diego) introduced the measure with an aim that providing convicts the right to vote will give them a better sense of belonging to society and possibly reduce their chances of committing new crimes when released.

How can you tell if a driver is stoned?

There are those, such as State Assemblyman Tom Lackey (R-Palmdale), who fear an increase in real-life risky driving if on Nov. 8 Californians pass Prop. 64, the initiative that would legalize recreational marijuana.  Lackey, a retired California Highway Patrol officer, wants the state to adopt a legal limit for THC - the mind-altering ingredient in cannabis. Without it, he says, patrol officers must rely mostly on their own subjective judgment as to whether a driver is impaired. That, he says, makes many officers uncomfortable.
