Slain Baton Rouge Officer Had Shared Touching Facebook Post Days Before Death
One of three officers slain in an “ambush-style” attack in Baton Rouge was identified by family members as 32-year-old Montrell Jackson, who was both a father and a husband. Jackson on Sunday lost his life while serving the people of Baton Rouge, along with two other officers. The three were among six officers who authorities say were shot by suspected gunman, Gavin Long of Kansas City, Mo. in an ambush-style attack on his 29th birthday.

LAPD will increase patrols, 911 screenings in wake of violence against police officers
The Los Angeles Police Department will get extra resources to make sure its officers are safe and supported following the killings of three law enforcement officers and the wounding of three others in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, according to Mayor Eric Garcetti. The Los Angeles Police Protective League, the union representing LAPD officers, issued a statement calling for “the civic leaders of our nation to replace platitudes and rhetorical support for law enforcement with action.” “Our police officers deserve your strongest support and undivided attention,” the statement said. “Now that 10 law enforcement officers have been murdered in 10 days, what will you to keep our communities safe?”

Baton Rouge police killer: An ex-Marine from Kansas City
The man who killed two police officers and a sheriff's deputy in Baton Rouge Sunday was a former Marine sergeant who served in Iraq and had no known ties to any extremist groups. Gavin Eugene Long, whose last known address was in Kansas City, Missouri, carried out the attack on his 29th birthday. Police say he also wounded three officers before he was killed in the latest in a string of violent incidents involving police and the black community.

Police shootings evoke tears, sympathy at Blue Lives Matter rally About 100 somber demonstrators, some displaying photos of lost loved ones in blue, rallied on the west steps of the Capitol on Sunday to honor the officers slain in Dallas and Baton Rouge and the thousands more who risk their lives every day. Nicole Romans of Roseville told the crowd she was there to honor her late husband, Erwin Romans II, one of four Oakland police officers shot to death during a traffic stop gone bad on March 31, 2009. The shooter, Lovelle Mixon, had just committed a double rape at gunpoint and killed the officers with guns stolen in Lodi, Romans said.

Police: Suspect shoots Wis. officer in squad car then kills himself
A domestic violence suspect opened fire on a Milwaukee police officer who was sitting in his squad car early Sunday, seriously wounding him before fleeing and apparently killing himself shortly afterward, authorities said. The suspect, a 20-year-old man from the suburb of West Allis, had two felonies on his arrest record, said police spokesman Sgt. Tim Gauerke, who did not disclose the man's name. The 31-year-old officer was taken to a hospital with serious wounds that weren't considered life-threatening, he said.

LAPD Swat Officers Donate Blood To Supervisor's Daughter, Children's Hospital Los Angeles
Los Angeles Police Department SWAT officers responded to a different call of duty Friday - donating blood to help their supervisor's daughter and patients at Children's Hospital Los Angeles. At first, it started with a few officers showing up at CHLA. They gave blood for SWAT supervisor Tim Colomy's 17-year-old daughter, Cassidy. The high school running star is about to undergo a spinal fusion surgery next week to treat a severe case of scoliosis.

The Game meets with L.A. gangs in an effort to stop killings
The Game, whose real name is Jayceon Terrell Taylor, told the hundreds gathered for a town-hall style meeting at a South Los Angeles community center that he was pushing a positive message because one day, he hopes his daughter will be able to walk the streets “a little safer.” In his Instagram post Sunday morning, before news spread of the killings of three police officers in Baton Rouge, La., the Game wrote that the meeting would be a “much needed conversation” about how participants could do their part to stop urban violence. “Because the sad truth that no one wants to face is, before we can get OUR LIVES TO MATTER to anyone else…We have to show that OUR LIVES MATTER to US!!!!,” he wrote.

'Savages': Suspects Caught on Camera But Still No Break in Unsolved South LA Murder
The surveillance video LAPD Criminal Gang Homicide detectives have seen over and over show two men circling a block, walking into an alley and ultimately - according to police - dumping a body. It happened in the early morning hours of November 12, 2015 at 91st Street and Compton Avenue in Watts. The crime left a father of two dead. "He was assaulted and we don't know if he died here at this location or was killed somewhere else and placed at this location," said LAPD Detective Mark Hahn. "He was beaten to death."

8-Year-Old Girl Killed, Others Critical After Car Plows Into South LA Home
Authorities say an 8-year-old girl has died after a car plowed into a South Los Angeles home. The single-vehicle crash Sunday in the 700 block of E. 93rd Street also left four others injured. Police said the driver of the vehicle, described as a woman in her 30s, was speeding down McKinley Avenue when she lost control and crashed into a brick wall and fence before slamming into the wall of a home. Witnesses said she was unconscious and trapped inside the car after the crash. She and three boys — between the ages of 18 months and 6 — were transported to the hospital.

Up to $10,000 Stolen from USC Jewish Student Center Police were investigating a break-in at the University of Southern California Jewish student center, which was caught on surveillance video. The eight surveillance cameras on the property caught the suspect coming in and out of the Chabad Jewish Student Center house early Wednesday morning. He is seen loading up his car with electronic equipment. Rabbi Dov Wagner said the thief got away with anywhere between $8,000 and $10,000 worth of property.

Security checkpoints at LAX detect for radioactive material inside vehicles
Checkpoints are set up at every entrance into LAX so police officers can look for high levels of radioactive material that could be used in a hazmat attack on travelers. “In this case you will see that the first vehicle is located approximately a quarter mile or so down range from where we are and the purpose behind that is to notice anything that may be coming our way prior to reaching the checkpoint,” Lt. Masis Sossikian, Airport Police, said.

Former LA Sheriff Slated to Be Sentenced for Lying to Feds
Former Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca is set to be sentenced Monday for lying to federal investigators during an FBI probe of civil rights violations in the jail system. Baca, who has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, is arguing for a probationary sentence, claiming his medical condition and past career make him susceptible to abuse while in custody.

Shortage of talent, strapped resources, slow search for LA County coroner
Some progress has been made in processing autopsies and toxicology results at the Los?Angeles County coroner's office, where the head of the department abruptly resigned three months ago because of the number of bodies that had piled up, heavy workloads and staff shortages, according to a recent report. The report, presented to the Los?Angeles County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday by the chief executive office, was in response to recommendations made to alleviate the backlog at the coroner's department.

Police tackle rise in gambling "slaphouses" in California What looked like a typical single-family home in a suburban neighborhood on the edge of Orange County's Little Saigon had been turned into an illegal gambling house where betters plunked down thousands in cash and stolen credit cards during all-night binges fueled by drinking and drugs. Over the past three years, police in the largely Vietnamese area said they've found more than a dozen of these homes run by gangs.

Leader of effort to overturn gun control laws is enlisting firearms shops for help
A San Diego-area businessman who filed papers seeking referenda to overturn six gun control laws said Saturday that he is part of a group of up to 100 activists who feel the measures were rushed through without considering public opinion. If the referenda qualify, the new gun laws, including background checks for people buying ammo, will be put on hold until the voters act. While it's possible the measures could qualify for the Nov. 8 statewide ballot, the lateness of the effort might mean the laws would be put on hold until the fall of 2018.

Congress Officially Backs LA's 2024 Summer Olympics Bid
The effort to bring the 2024 Summer Olympics to Los Angeles got a boost from Congress, with its members voting to throw their support behind the event, officials said Friday. A resolution backing the bid was unanimously passed by the House of Representatives earlier this week, and by the Senate Thursday, according to Sen. Dianne Feinstein, who co-sponsored the Senate version with Georgia senator Johnny Isakson.
