At slain Baton Rouge officer's funeral, calls for respect and unity
When protests erupted here over a black man's killing during a struggle with two white police officers, Baton Rouge police officer Matthew Gerald made a promise to an old friend who urged him to be careful. Baton Rouge's mayor and police chief hailed Gerald as a hero who proudly served his country during three tours in Iraq before joining the police force nine months ago. The mayor and chief also issued broad appeals to respect police and heal wounds opened by the death of Alton Sterling, a black man whose shooting by police was videotaped and posted online, prompting widespread protests.

Violent crime in LA rises by nearly 16% so far this year
Continuing a trend that began in 2014, overall violent crime in the city of Los Angeles rose by nearly 16?percent this year compared with the same time last year, with more robberies and aggravated assaults listed as the main causes. The LAPD's union, the Los Angeles Police Protective League, responded saying more police officers should be taken off desk duty and put back on patrol. “What Angelenos desperately need is action to make our neighborhoods safe, and what police officers need is support to safely do their jobs, not the usual lip service from the mayor and police chief telling residents things aren't so bad.”

The Dec. 9 attack that left Bheri Werntz seriously injured was part of a month-long series of shootings, robberies, carjackings and at least one killing that authorities across Los Angeles County attribute to Artyom Gasparyan, a 32-year-old with an extensive criminal record. Police launched an around-the-clock search that ended when detectives shot and wounded Gasparyan after a wrong-way chase on the 5 Freeway in early January.   A definitive moment, Hayes said, came when police chased Gasparyan and his alleged accomplice into the Harbor Gateway neighborhood of Los Angeles.
