LAPD officer wounded in running gunfight, suspect killed
According to police, two officers were patrolling the public housing project when they tried to approach a group. An 18-year-old African American man fled from the scene and fired at the officers. The LA Police Protective League issued a statement in response to the incident: “Last night's shooting of a Los Angeles Police officer demonstrates how unsafe many parts of Los Angeles remain. When multiple officers are shot at for simply doing their job it underscores the need for residents to redouble their efforts to work with law enforcement to address violent crime in their neighborhoods. While it's tragic anytime a life is lost, our officers must act to protect their own lives and try to keep the public safe.”

Outrage, then gratitude: 12 hours in the life of the LAPD at a Watts housing project
The fast-moving drama in Nickerson Gardens underscored the complicated duality of modern-day policing. Twelve hours before, the police killing of a black 18-year-old had infuriated the neighborhood. That anger, however, melted away — at least temporarily — when officers ran to another black man who needed help. “If those officers never came,” one woman remarked after an ambulance arrived, “he probably wouldn't be here.”

Off-Duty LAPD Officer Involved in Shootout in Eastvale An off-duty police officer who was fired upon by an unknown shooter in a passing vehicle in Eastvale on Tuesday returned fire and was not injured in the incident, according to the Riverside County Sheriff's Department. “The investigation revealed an off-duty LAPD officer's vehicle was burglarized,” Deputy Michael Vasquez wrote in a news release. “While the officer was assessing the damage, an occupant from a vehicle driving by his location … began firing at him.”

Fatal victims believed to be brothers are named in Baldwin Hills shooting
Two men killed in a shooting in the Baldwin Hills area were identified today and are believed to be brothers. It happened at 11:30 p.m. Sunday outside a building at 4032 Stevely Ave., according to Sgt. Carlton Brown of the Los Angeles Police Department's Southwest Station. Olajuwon Ashley, 24, and Orlando Ashley, 25, both of Los Angeles, died at the scene, coroner's Assistant Chief Ed Winter said. The men are believed to have been brothers, Winter said.

LAPD Investigate Two Hammer Attacks in Boyle Heights
Los Angeles Police Department officials are investigating two assaults involving a hammer and are working to determine if the incidents are tied to similar attacks in East Los Angeles earlier this year. The most recent attack occurred on July 21 about 6:25 p.m. near Savannah and New Jersey streets. A man was walking his dog when he was hit in the back of a head with a hammer. The victim ran to his house and did not get a description of the suspect, police said.

Widow's Studio City Home Burglarized, Wedding Ring Stolen A widow in Studio City had her home broken into and precious memories of her late husband were stolen, including her wedding ring. Sarah Bencivenga thought losing her husband Matt just six months ago to cancer was the hardest thing she would have to face. That was until cold-hearted thieves stole her treasured wedding ring from her late husband. Police said the crooks were caught on camera.

Shooting spree: $10,000 rewards renewed for information on death of three men
The Board of Supervisors Tuesday renewed $10,000 rewards in hopes of solving three unrelated shootings that took the lives of a young man in Lynwood, a 53-year-old lawyer in Rolling Hills Estates and a 26- year-old Long Beach man. Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas recommended extending the reward in the July 24, 2014, “senseless” shooting death of 18-year-old Alexis Alvarado- Garcia.

LA Inventor Creates 'Bullet Proof Blinds' Recent gun violence has raised fears about attacks and now a Los Angeles-area inventor said he developed a special shield suitable for use at home or at the workplace. The product is called Bullet Proof Blinds, which is actually more like a ballistic curtain. The product, also called the Bullet Barrier, is designed to withstand gunfire at close range.

So-Called ‘Cowboy Bandits' Convicted for Robberies Throughout L.A. County: FBI
Two men dubbed the “Cowboy Bandits” were convicted in connection with a series of armed robberies at gas stations and a bank throughout Los Angeles County in the fall of 2013, FBI officials said Tuesday. Dominic Dorsey, 48, of Hollywood, and Reginald Bailey, 71, of Jefferson Park were arrested in June 2014. They were nicknamed the “Cowboy Bandits” because one of the men brandished a long-barreled Colt six-shooter, the newspaper reported, and authorities believe they might be linked to more robberies.

Former Los Angeles Immigration Agent Gets Prison For Bribery
A former U.S. homeland security agent is going to prison for accepting bribes from a Korean businessman suspected of sex-slave trafficking. Joohoon David Lee of Las Vegas was sentenced to 10 months in federal prison on Tuesday. He pleaded guilty last year. Lee was a human trafficking investigator in Los Angeles four years ago when he interviewed a woman who claimed she was entering the United States to be a sex slave for the businessman.

Is there abuse in LA's juvenile halls? Supervisor wants to find out
A Los Angeles County supervisor concerned about allegations of abuse in juvenile halls and camps is set to ask next week for a detailed report on three years of incidents at the facilities. Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas previewed his request today, saying he was prepared to “tell the probation department to get its act together.” He said the department, which is responsible for managing 13 probation camps and three juvenile halls, has long struggled to protect the youth in its care.

500 feet from a party where 14 were shot but survived, one man dies from stray bullet, officials say
The gunmen stood in front of a group of people partying outside of the Bakersfield home and sprayed bullets. Fourteen people were shot. Not one died. But in defiance of what seem to be astronomical odds, 500 feet to the south, a man was killed by a stray bullet. Kern County sheriff's spokesman Ray Pruitt said investigators believe that bullet was fired by someone at the party who was shooting back at the attackers.

Petitions Cleared In Push Against California Gun Laws
State officials have certified petitions that opponents of stricter gun regulations can now circulate in California to overturn recent laws that expanded background checks to buy guns and ammunition and attempted to curb the sale of rapid-reloading firearms. The effort could be a longshot, however, as more than 365,000 signatures are needed on each of six separate petitions by Sept. 29 to qualify for the November 2018 ballot.

Nearly 20 ex-convicts who had been drug addicts, gangbangers and prostitutes strained their eyes in an attempt to grasp the colorful, intricate diagram scribbled on the whiteboard. On a Sunday afternoon in Oakland, the group gathered with community organizers to discuss mass incarceration in a small, fluorescent-lit office tucked in a strip mall. Brandon Sturdivant, an advocate with the faith-based network Oakland Community Organizations, pointed at the board that described the impacts of Proposition 47. Specifically, he singled out one number: $67 million.

Freddie Gray case: Charges dropped against remaining officers
Prosecutors are dropping charges against the three remaining Baltimore police officers who were facing trial in connection with Freddie Gray's death. Six officers were charged after the April 2015 death of Gray, a 25-year-old who sustained a neck injury while in police custody. Three of them had already been acquitted. A pretrial hearing for Officer Garrett Miller had been set for Wednesday. Trials for Officers Alicia White and William Porter had been scheduled for the fall.

John Hinckley, Who Tried To Kill Reagan, Wins His Freedom President Ronald Reagan's would-be assassin will live full-time outside a mental hospital for the first time in over 35 years, NBC News confirmed. A federal judge granted John Hinckley Jr. permission to live with his elderly mother in Williamsburg, Virginia, Wednesday. Hinckley must live with his mother for at least the first full year, the judge ruled. After that, he can live in a separate home alone or with roommates provided that members of his treatment team approve.

Governor declares state of emergency for the 37,000 acre 'Sand Fire'
With the majority of evacuated residents back home Wednesday, fire crews were working to add to their hard-fought progress against the deadly Sand Fire in the Santa Clarita area. About 3,000 firefighters were on the lines working to knock down the blaze, which began Friday afternoon near Sand Canyon Road in Santa Clarita, along the northbound Antelope Valley (14) Freeway.

Should LA spend $37 million on a fire fighting airplane?
Arguing that Southern California's fire season is now a yearlong affair, L.A. County Supervisor Mike Antonovich wants a fire-fighting airplane known as the "Super Scooper" to be available year-round. The Canadian-designed amphibious aircraft can scoop up 1,600 gallons of water in 12 seconds from a body of water, which is dumped over large-scale wildfires.

Effort to recall LA City Councilman Paul Krekorian fails
An effort by several San Fernando Valley residents to recall a Los Angeles city councilman from office has flopped. The group seeking to oust Councilman Paul Krekorian failed to deliver the required 18,536 signatures needed to put the issue to voters in a special election, said Horacio Arroyo, who works in the city's election division. The group faced a Tuesday 5 p.m. deadline to deliver the required signatures to the city.
