Ambushes prompt police families to ask, 'When is it going to stop?'
Tara Higgins makes sure her cellphone battery isn't low when her daughter, a police officer, goes to work. Once her daughter's workday starts, Higgins listens to a police scanner, counting the hours until the shift ends. Recent ambushes of police in Dallas and Baton Rouge, La., have darkened the shadow of anxiety that comes with being the parent — or wife, son, grandfather, friend — of a cop.

Search for Gunman in Deadly Harbor City Shooting
A family is mourning the loss of a woman who was shot dead while working at a barbecue stand. Jane Yamamoto reports for the NBC4 News on Monday, Aug. 1, 2016.   A double shooting  at a barbecue stand outside an auto parts store in Harbor City left a woman dead and a man wounded. The unidentified gunman, who remains outstanding, fired shots toward the Wheaton's Eatins barbecue stand, fatally wounding a woman who worked there and wounding another man in the arm, police told reporters at the scene.

National Night Out brings policing conversations into communities
Law enforcement officials from across Southern California and the nation will come together with their communities tonight to share crime tips, eat barbecue, watch K-9 units practice their maneuvers and generally celebrate police. And, perhaps, have some tough conversations.

Officer, Suspect Injured In Officer-Involved Shooting At East Hollywood Walgreens
A man and police officer suffered minor injuries after an officer-involved shooting took place inside an East Hollywood Walgreens early Tuesday morning.  Authorities said around 12:50 a.m. a customer and manager got into a dispute over a check at a Walgreens near Sunset Boulevard and Western Avenue.  When officer arrived on the scene, they tried to calm the dispute but it led to a shooting between an officer and the customer. The man, who is in his 30s, and the officer both suffered minor graze wounds. Both were taken to a hospital for an evaluation.

Ex-Sheriff Lee Baca withdraws guilty plea, heads to trial
Former Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca withdrew his guilty plea to a federal corruption charge Monday and will go to trial, with a court date tentatively set for September. When he was Sheriff, Lee Baca was one of the most powerful figures in California law enforcement. He sent lots of people to  court  and, now, he was facing a judge. Says Baca, “Several Months ago I entered a guilty plea to one charge filed against me. Be very clear… one charge!”

Accused Surf Gang Member to Stand Trial in Dodger Stadium Attack
A Palos Verdes Estates resident accused of knocking a man unconscious in a Dodger Stadium parking lot after a game last October was ordered Monday to stand trial on a charge of assault by means likely to produce great bodily injury. Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Michael E. Pastor found sufficient evidence to hold Michael Rae Papayans, a 28-year-old alleged member of a notorious South Bay surfing gang, to answer to the felony charge.

17-Year-Old Reckless Driving Suspect Taken Into Custody After Leading Officers On 2-Hour Pursuit
A 17-year-old reckless driving suspect was arrested near San Onofre Monday afternoon after leading authorities on a two-hour, circuitous chase that began in the Calabasas area. Sheriff's deputies initially tried to stop the motorist for alleged reckless or impaired driving in the Calabasas area, but the suspect kept going, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Man Scaling Jail Fence Was Trying to Get In, Not Out: Deputies
A man caught climbing a fence at a Southern California jail was trying to get in, not out, authorities say. Sheriff's officials say 28-year-old Shane James McDonald wasn't a prisoner at the Central Detention Center in San Bernardino when he was spotted scaling the perimeter fence early Sunday. But he did have a warrant out for his arrest.

Competing death penalty ballot measures reel in $6 million
Campaign contributions poured into dueling death penalty campaigns in California, reaching more than $6 million as of June 30, according to the latest campaign finance reports. The highest total amount of contributions -- $3.6 million so far in 2016 -- has flowed to Proposition 62, which seeks to abolish capital punishment and replace it with life in prison without parole. The Nov. 8 ballot measure reported raising $1.3 million in donations during the latest reporting period, which spanned from April to June.

Supporters of California gun control initiative have big fundraising lead over opponents
Tapping some high-profile donors, supporters of a California gun control initiative on the November ballot have a huge head start over opponents in campaign fundraising, according to financial reports filed Monday with the state. Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom's Safety for All Committee reported it has raised $3.8 million so far, compared with $467,000 raised by two committees opposing Proposition 63.

Before she became district attorney in Alameda County, Nancy O'Malley prosecuted rape cases. She soon came to recognize a number of young women and girls who cycled through the courtroom. Their stories were always the same, she says. They loved their boyfriends, who coerced them into selling sex to other men.

Airbnb to Begin Paying Hotel Taxes, Expected to Bring in $5.8M in Revenue
Short-term rental company Airbnb has agreed to collect and pay hotel taxes on behalf of its Los Angeles hosts under a three-year agreement announced by city officials Monday. Starting Aug. 1, Airbnb will be responsible for paying the hotel taxes -- also known as "transient occupancy taxes" -- that are owed by hosts who rent out rooms and properties through the company's website and smartphone applications.

Century Boulevard Near LAX to Be Shut Down on Alternating Sides During August Weeknights
Alternating sides of Century Boulevard, a major thoroughfare near Los Angeles International Airport, will be closed to traffic every weeknight for four weeks begin Monday evening. The overnight one-way roadway closures are needed while Metro constructs its Aviation/Century station as part of the Crenshaw/LAX Transit Project.

Unveiled Renderings of Potential LA Venues For 2024 Olympics
Los Angeles's bid committee for the 2024 Olympics unveiled renderings of potential aquatic and track and field venues in the city. On Friday, it was a first look at plans for turning the L.A. Memorial Coliseum into a venue for world-class track and field competition. The iconic stadium hosted the Olympic Games in 1932 and 1984, and L.A. officials hope to light the Olympic flame at the coliseum again in 2024.
