Police Union Says LA Rams Owner Should Pay for LAPD Security During Season
The LAPPL wants the L.A. Rams to pay for the extra LAPD officers that will be needed for security during the football season. "Let's not forget the Rams are a multi-billion dollar organization, and all we are asking them to do is to pay for the resources that they need to ensure that the fans, players, staff are kept safe," LAPPL director Robert Harris said. "We're here today with a simple message for the owner of the Los Angeles Rams: we expect you to pay your bills—in full," said Jerretta Sandoz, LAPPL Vice President. "If there was a burglary at your house, the detective that should've been working on your case on Monday won't be at work because he'll be working the Rams game on Sunday," said LAPPL director Lou Turriga.

Children got a rare opportunity Wednesday as part of LAPD's Shop With a Cop event, receiving gift cards for $100 in school supplies. LAPD Newton Division officers acted as the kids' personal shoppers, holding their baskets and wheeling around their carts at a Staples on Aug. 3, 2016.

Police investigate man shot and killed in Venice, suspect search underway
A 30-year-old man was shot and killed in Venice Wednesday afternoon, police said. Officers found the victim in the street at 4:05 p.m. while responding to a shots-fired call in the area of Seventh Avenue and Brooks Court, said Officer Norma Eisenman of the Los Angeles Police Department's Media Relations. He was pronounced dead at the scene , she said.

After 16 years, a call out of the blue leads to the LAPD capturing a 'most wanted' murder suspect
The tip came in the form of a voice message. The woman on the line said she had been browsing the “most wanted” section of the Los Angeles Police Department's website and saw a photo of a man she recognized. The man, Samuel Calvario, was a suspect in a 16-year-old homicide. The website warned that he was considered “armed and dangerous” and urged members of the public not to try to apprehend him themselves.

After years of asking the hard questions, L.A.'s longest-serving police commissioner is stepping down
Robert Saltzman was torn. As a member of the Los Angeles Police Commission, he wasn't sure whether he wanted to renew LAPD Chief Charlie Beck's job for another five years. Craig Lally, the president of the union that represents the rank-and-file, said he believed Saltzman was too tough on officers when reviewing how they used force. “I just wish he would have been more open-minded,” Lally said. “We just want smart, objective people to listen to the facts and not listen to the noise.”

Man Sought in Attack on Woman
Police sought the public's help Wednesday in identifying a suspect in the attempted murder of a 66-year-old woman in South Los Angeles. Officers responded to a report of a battery around 2:30 a.m. Wednesday at a motel in the 7100 block of South Vermont Avenue and discovered the victim in one of the motel rooms, unconscious and severely beaten, according to Detective Rick Gordon of the Los Angeles Police Department's Criminal/Gang Homicide Division.

Sexual Predator Wearing Virgin Mary Shirt Wanted In LA
Police sought the public's help Wednesday with identifying a sexual predator who has assaulted at least two women in Echo Park and East Los Angeles. According to police, the first incident took place shortly before 12:30 p.m. Monday at an apartment complex located in the 800 block of North Mariposa Street. The suspect entered through the front door of the victim's apartment.

Facebook credited with return of stolen $10,000 painting to San Pedro art gallery
A $10,000 painting could have wound up in the trash bin if not for Facebook. The 3-by-6-foot mixed media abstract piece, titled “Escondido” by artist Neil Nagy, was ripped off the wall of the Warschaw Gallery during open hours on July 7, during First Thursday Art Walk festivities in downtown San Pedro. “It was stolen on First Thursday at about 3 in the afternoon,” said Ron Linden, director of the gallery on the corner of Sixth Street and Pacific Avenue.

A well-known Beverly Hills physician who once appeared on “The Doctors” was almost beaten to death in an attack in Venice. Dr. Bruce Lee dedicated his life to helping others, and has pioneered medical treatments that have changed women's lives. “The guy just went ballistic and started brutally … sorry … started brutally beating him,” said Kimberley, his fiancé, who was still shaken. “And then I realized that I could very easily die,” said Lee via phone.

2 Officers in Shooting of Ezell Ford Sue LAPD, Claiming Racial Discrimination
Two Los Angeles police officers involved in the deadly shooting of a mentally ill man in South Los Angeles in 2014 sued the city Wednesday, alleging they are being kept from returning to field duty due to racial discrimination and retaliation. "The chief (Charlie Beck) declared that all aspects of the shooting were within policy. Plaintiffs were cleared by the department," the suit says. However, the Police Commission -- described in the lawsuit as "an inexperienced group of political appointees" - overturned the LAPD's findings and found the shooting was out of policy.

Border Patrol arrests mom after discovering cocaine stash with street value of $459K
U.S. Border Patrol agents encountered a woman yesterday morning who was allegedly smuggling bundles of cocaine while traveling with two children along Interstate 5 near San Clemente. Border Patrol K-9 handler stopped a 2001 Honda Accord driven by a 25-year-old female on northbound I-5, near the Cristianitos Rd. exit. The vehicle was also occupied by two children , a 2-year-old girl and an 11-year-old boy.

State lawmakers are warned that California's 911 system needs cash, and soon
California is running out of money for 911 emergency services and lawmakers need to find a solution, industry and local government representatives said Wednesday in a hearing at the state Capitol. By the end of the fiscal year, California will have depleted its 911 fund to less than $11 million, down from nearly $77 million three years ago. The fund covers the majority of costs for 911-related equipment and services in most local communities.

A chance meeting with the governor of Colorado has left California Senate leader Kevin de León (D-Los Angeles) with concerns about an initiative that would legalize the recreational use of marijuana in this state, he said Wednesday. “I'm not there yet,” De León told reporters when asked his position on Proposition 64. “I don't know if I am behind the times in comparison to other folks, but I still have my concerns.”

Fire Erupts After LADWP Backhoe Strikes 4-Inch Gas Main in Woodland Hills
A fire erupted after a 4-inch gas main was struck by a city water crew in Woodland Hills Wednesday afternoon, prompting officials to evacuate nearby homes and warn of a "dangerous situation" in the area. The blaze erupted just before 1:15 p.m. in the 5800 block of Shoup Avenue. Buildings were exposed on three sides of the blaze, the Los Angeles Fire Department said.
