Hundreds attend funeral for slain SDPD Officer Jonathan De Guzman
Flowers lined the entrance Thursday to Corpus Christi Catholic Church where friends, family, fellow law enforcement officers and members of the public gathered in Bonita for the first of two memorial services to honor slain San Diego police officer Jonathan De Guzman. The church, which holds 1,200 people, was filled to capacity for the 90 minute service which began at 11 a.m. after De Guzman's casket was escorted into the church carried by pallbearers including the officer's 17-year-old son.

Yesterday, the Los Angeles Police Protective League demanded that the multibillionaire owner of the Los Angeles Rams pay his bills for police services in full. The LAPD estimates that the annual cost to provide police services outside of the L.A. Coliseum is $2 million. That's chump change when it comes to the Ram's owner. Earlier this year, we pleaded with the Mayor for more funds to increase neighborhood police patrols, but we were told the City couldn't afford it. That's a basic service. So, we expect him to tell the person aiming to capitalize on the nation's second largest media market that we just can't afford to give you a free lunch today. Sorry.

‘Black August' Bulletin Warns Of Potential Violence Against Police, Prison Guards
Law enforcement officials are warning of a new threat of attacks against officers on the street and in prisons over the next month. A bulletin from the Federal Bureau of Prisons, Sacramento Intelligence Unit and the FBI's National Gang Intelligence Center warns of increased risk for violence against prison guards and police officers during what's being called “Black August”. The Black Guerilla Family (BGF) prison gang reportedly started Black August in the 1970s to honor fallen members. The group believes state prison officials conspired with Aryan Brotherhood members to have a prominent member of BGF killed in prison last summer. CBS 2
Mother Of 7 Doused In Gasoline, Set On Fire In Broad Daylight
The hunt is on for a man accused of dousing a mother of seven in gasoline before setting her on fire in South Los Angeles. Tabitha Morton remains in critical condition at a hospital with extensive burns following the attack, which unfolded June 12th in an alley in the 500 block of E. Vernon Avenue. “This occurred in broad daylight in front of witnesses and she was critically injured while he simply walked away,” said Capt. Daniel Curry of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

1 killed, 2 injured in gas station car-to-car shooting
Two crime scenes. Three victims...and one killer. It was a busy morning for homicide detectives with the LA County Sheriff's Department and officers at LAPD's Southeast station as they worked to solve a murder mystery. The story starts at a gas station's food mart on Imperial Highway. It was just before 1 o'clock Thursday morning when police say a couple was sitting inside a car outside the store.

Man shot while driving on 210 Freeway; LAPD seeking two suspects on motorcycles
A driver was shot in the left arm on the Foothill (210) Freeway in Sylmar early Thursday in an attack carried out by gunmen on two motorcycles, police said. The shooting took place sometime between 4:15 a.m. and 5:15 a.m. on the Roxford Street on-ramp, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. The motorist, who was not identified, was taken to a hospital in stable condition.

Victim in Venice Shooting Remembered as Family Man; Shooter Still at Large
As co-workers remembered him fondly Thursday, the 37-year-old man who was shot and killed while directing traffic at a construction site in Venice was identified by police. Marvin Ponce of San Fernando was killed in the Wednesday afternoon shooting, according to the L.A. County coroner's office. Friends of the victim told KTLA he was the father of a 1-year-old daughter.

Former L.A. County sheriff's deputies lose appeal in obstruction of justice case
A federal appeals court Thursday upheld the convictions of seven former Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies on charges they tried to thwart an FBI investigation into county jails. The unanimous decision by the three-judge panel from the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals clears the way for the former deputies, among them rank-and-file officers and mid-level commanders, to be sent to prison on lengthy sentences.

Should reserve peace officers be able to buy assault rifles to use on the job?
A group of reserve law enforcement officers has sued Atty. Gen. Kamala D. Harris, contending her office has improperly ended a longstanding practice of allowing them to have assault weapons while on duty. The lawsuit, filed Wednesday in Los Angeles by the California Reserve Peace Officers Assn., says state law permits part-time sworn officers and deputies to have semiautomatic rifles if authorized by their departments. California law defines such rifles as assault weapons.

CHP to Create Guidelines for Lane Splitting Under Bill Headed to Gov. Brown
California has become the first state in the nation to formalize the practice of lane splitting after state Assembly members on Thursday passed a bill authorizing the California Highway Patrol to establish guidelines for motorcyclists on how to do it safely. The bill, sponsored by Assembly member Bill Quirk (D-Hayward), passed Thursday with a 69-0 vote. On the floor, Quirk said the proposed law had many positives, including reducing traffic congestion and promoting safety.

Local Scientists Create Temporary Tattoo Senses Blood Alcohol Level
UC San Diego scientists have created an electronic temporary tattoo that can accurately measure a user's blood-alcohol level and send those results to a mobile device. The flexible wearable sensor, crafted by nanoengineers at UC San Diego, consists of two parts: a temporary tattoo and a portable flexible electronic circuit board, connected to the tattoo with a magnet.

California lawmakers move toward limiting police seizures of property without a criminal conviction
Major law enforcement groups and state Sen. Holly Mitchell (D-Los Angeles) have reached a deal on legislation to limit the ability of police in California to permanently seize cars, cash, homes and other property from suspected criminals without a conviction, potentially paving the way for California to join the growing list of states that have reined in the practice.
